Common questions about Medicare Rehab, Worcester

Answered from what is listed here.

Does Medicare cover drug and alcohol rehab in Worcester?

Yes, in part. Part A covers hospital-based detox and inpatient care and Part B covers outpatient, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization care, but Original Medicare generally does not cover a non-hospital residential stay.

Medicare rehab listings in Worcesterhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/worcester/medicare-worcester/
What is the difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage for rehab?

Original Medicare lets a person see any provider who accepts Medicare with little prior authorization, while Medicare Advantage must cover the same benefits through its own network and, for most enrollees in 2026, with prior authorization required for at least some services.

senior rehab programs in Worcesterhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/worcester/senior-worcester/
Does Medicare cover residential rehab in Massachusetts?

Generally no. Original Medicare does not cover non-hospital residential treatment, though hospital inpatient care, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs are covered when medically necessary.

outpatient rehab programs in Worcesterhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/massachusetts/worcester/outpatient-worcester/

Worcester calls itself the Heart of the Commonwealth, sitting about 40 miles west of Boston and 50 miles east of Springfield, and that distance matters for a Medicare beneficiary trying to figure out whether a specific rehab program is close enough to count as local or far enough that transportation becomes part of the planning. Before any of that, though, comes the more basic question: what will Medicare actually pay for.

Medicare’s substance use disorder benefit is not a single policy but a patchwork across four parts, each covering a different setting. Part A handles hospital stays. Part B handles outpatient care, including two categories that have expanded in recent years: intensive outpatient programs and opioid treatment program services. Part D handles many, though not all, of the medications used in treatment. None of these parts was designed around substance use disorder specifically, which is part of why coverage reads unevenly from one setting to the next.

A person can also reach Medicare through two very different routes: Original Medicare, run directly by the federal government, or a private Medicare Advantage plan that must cover everything Original Medicare covers but adds its own network and authorization rules on top. The two routes can feel like entirely different programs in practice, even though the underlying benefit is legally the same.
