Center for Discovery – Cypress Reviews and Ratings
Patients remember things about Center for Discovery that no register holds: who answered the phone, how the first day went, whether family were included.
If you have that kind of knowledge, a review in this section passes it on.
I loved my time here. As much as the reason sucked and I was very hesitant to go, especially after seeing the reviews, I am so grateful for my time here and the people I met and so glad I chose this place. I could not… thank this place enough for helping me in my recovery, finding myself, and helping my self esteem. The reviews do not do this place justice, not to invalidate anyones experience here. For me, I had such a great experience and would highly recomend this place.
I was admitted to Center For Discovery at the end of July and was there up until a few weeks ago. The staff was very kind and often made me things easier for me in the house. I liked my therapist and dietian. The… facility is actually a house which makes things more comfortable then previous places I've been. I honestly only have three issues with the whole experience. First off, I think It was really strange to have both adolescents and adults together on the unit. It made things hard for me while there as for majority of my stay I was the only adolescent. I felt unincluded and was unable to make connections with other patients. I get it may be weird to talk to a "child" as an adult, but the oldest person was only three years older than me. I would sometimes isolate myself because it felt as if I was unwelcome by the adults sometimes. Not sure if anything can be done about this, but just wanted to share this part of my experience. I think conflicts between patients can be handled a little better. Another patient would often say very rude things to me and was just generally disrespectful to everyone. She would answer questions directed at me and offer unwanted advice that came off as insulting. For example, I was debating going on an outing or not with a staff member because I would be leaving and didn't want to pay to ship my pottery home. The other patient interjected into the conversation and made a very rude remark. This happened very often and if I didn't say anything, no one else would. I felt very hurt a lot of the time and it made treatment unnecessary hard. When I was admitted here I was already weight restored from a previous admition to a different residential program in Utah, but they ignored this. I gained over twenty unnecessary pounds while in treatment here. I was already at a very healthy weight and did not need to gain anymore weight, which was confirmed by my doctor. I just needed treatment, not weight restoration. Overall it was an average experience. I wouldn't say it was anything special, nor was it the most awful thing I'd ever experienced. This place was not really a factor in my recovery, but I could see how it could have been if I had been more lost. I think this place works best for people who are just starting recovery.
We are grateful to the staff of Center for Discovery Cypress for the change in our daughter. She is happier and healthier today.
Center for discovery saved my life. The bad reviews scared me at first and I was nervous to go. Once I got there I found a place where I felt understood and seen. The first time I went I did not take it seriously. I’m… happy I got the chance for them to help me again. One thing people don’t understand is treatment is not magic, you have to put in the work too. They helped aid me in my recovery process and now I feel better than ever. It is what you make of it. The staff is absolutely incredible and easy to talk to and bond with. I met patients there that I now consider my friends. It’s helpful to be around people that understand. Chrystal is an amazing staff member who is respectful and caring. All the nurses are very thoughtful and they made every day a little easier. I found that saying goodbye was hard but every person there helped shape me into who I am right now. I now can look forward to my future and am excited to live and feel like myself again. Center for discovery was fun and helpful I am always grateful. I highly recommend getting treatment here.
When our daughter was admitted to the Center For Discovery, Cypress Tx., her body and mind were not in a good place. Of course, at first she was resistant, but after a few weeks we started noticing big changes. Dr.… Rana, her psychiatrist, made some changes to her meds. Miss Ashleigh her therapist worked constantly with her and kept in constant contact with us. Nurse Shoba would greet us when we visited our daughter, after talking to her you could see she had a servants heart, her concern and care for the children was evident. Our daughter said Nurse Shoba just made her feel peaceful and cared for. Naomi, the dietician, was honest and kind. After a few weeks our daughter looked healthier, her eyes were brighter, and she was more confident in herself. Nurse Indie would email through updates to us weekly and was always available for questions and concerns. After about a month we noticed her thoughts and habits were changing for the better. We can't say enough about the whole staff. Watching our daughter's physical and mental health change over her 2 month stay was amazing and heartwarming. Anyone with a loved one needing treatment should consider The Center For Discovery, Cypress. Yes, the first few weeks may be hard, yes, they will eat to build up their physical strength. But once they buy in to the process you and your loved one will be happy with the result.
if i could give negative stars id give a million. These people don’t treat patients as humans! made fun of my friend time after time and treated her not like a human. you go to these please because you’re seeking help.… not to think you’re going to get it and get the complete opposite
went here about 2 years ago. horrible place with a weird doctor ( dont know if hes still there) who would tell some patients they needed to eat burgers. it was very understaffed and particularly one staff member,… crystal, would yell at patients and me, which would make us all scared and resentful of her. We were also super rushed in the morning, getting no time to change and shower. The only thing i liked about this place was the nurses and getting to bond with the other patient's. Overall, really shitty place but did help me in recovery because of all pf the bonds i was able to make with people who were going through similar things like me.
Center for discovery >>>> there’s definitely things that could be improve but I feel like that’s anywhere, I felt safe, cared for, and like my recovery and every other patients recovery was the most important thing to… every staff member! They all work very hard! Thank you CFD cypress for everything! You guys rock! 🧡
pretty crappy place. not a lot to do. the groups repeat the same stuff. you learn some decent things but everything is just like "take deep breaths feel it out yay!" but when you're genuinely having a mental breakdown,… especially- say, while you're eating- staff tends to just ignore you. i've had times where i've been outright bawling and scratching myself and the most they've done is pulled me aside and shortly spoke to me. or just tell me to stop hurting myself. overall, they're pretty poorly trained. i mean, a lot of people are just working there for experience, staff looks like they could be there themselves. none of them usually have any solid understanding of eating disorders, a lot of the new staff is young and it's just appalling how rude some of them can be. a lot of them are quite dismissive, and don't allow a lot of leninecy. they have scheduled meal times, but you'd be surprised how often you'd be sitting late. the hygiene times are ridiculous, you get 15 minutes in the morning to do everything you need. and that's getting changed, taking a whole shower, using the restroom- it's a very rushed process, even if you're the only one in your room. extremely frustrating. i've had some staff speak to me in an outright abusive manner. not a good place to go. they just make you gain some weight, ask you how you feel, then send you on your way. there are some exceptions when it comes to staff- most of them had good intentions and were friendly and could crack jokes. but overall, as a patient here who relapsed- i wouldn't recommend it.
DONT GO HERE IF YOU ARE DIABETIC I am a type 1 diabetic and was sent here from NJ because they “can treat diabetes” they have refused to give me insulin until I was in the 400s and refused to allow my mother to give me… insulin. I was sent to the hospital with only 1 pair of pajamas and 1 outfit and am currently in a hotel not knowing what to do. The doctor refuses to listen to my endocrinologist team and to talk to my mother. This has been a huge stress for me and my loved ones, PLEASE don’t go here if you are a diabetic. The staff there are amazing though they’re doing all they can and truly care.
i do not reccomend this place for people struggling with bullemia/ binging issues. This was my issue as i would always eat way too much and struggled to get out of this habbit. I just wanted a normal relationship with… food, However this place i noticed was mostly directed towards people with anorexia. When i was admitted i wasnt even underweight. I was about 120 lbs standing at 5'4. gaining weight was never my issue. Eating proper portions of food and keeping it down was my issue. They never listened to me though. Their portions are ridiculous for someone trying to eat more healthy and balanced meals. I also informed them I have been diagnosed with pcos so it is very easy for me to put on weight. Still though they didnt listen and i was eating the same portions as the anorexic girls. I put on about 20 pounds in the span of 3 weeks. I signed myself out since this program wasnt doing anything for me. Id say if you struggle with anorexia give it a shot. But if you struggle with mainly bullemia I would look elsewhere. side note: if you are an adult just fyi you would be sharing a unit with minors as young as 14. Just kinda found that weird and it wasnt mentioned to me upon admission.
I was very impressed with the professional staff; clean, therapeutic facility; and the overall programming and planning at the Center. My daughter appreciated it. Upon discharge, she talks favorably of the place and of… her learning a lot about herself. I shout thank you 100 times for the appreciated, healthy results.
It’s a punitive based approach where they restrict contact with family and friends. There is no onsite doctor, it is mostly virtual doctor visits. The virtual doctor is an asshat, the junior staff is woefully… inadequate. They ask you to adhere to their rules, but then they break them. Communication with staff was minimal and seemed to be a fear based approach to convey that they are your only option. They schedule virtual doctor visits during family visitation and don’t explain much of anything. My daughter said she was “warehoused and forced to eat, but they refused to give her an alternative for whole milk when she is violently lactose intolerant. We removed her and got her into a family based therapy with real professionals, and my daughter is thriving. CFD is an insurance money grab, while doing the bare minimum in my opinion. They always recommend residential placement and keep you there for weeks longer than originally told. After one virtual meeting with the doctor we pulled our daughter. He is very much in love with himself, and very much a nincompoop. The case manager from Dell Children’s Hospital informed us that Center for Discovery has a history of calling CPS (Child Protective Services) on parents that pull their children out early. So CYA, these are not your family’s saviors. Poorly trained and understaffed pack of nitwits, that have no business supervising anyone for anything. The only thing we discovered there, was a sham. Punitive rehabilitation methods are archaic and insufficient for something as serious as an eating disorder. They want you to believe that you can’t do this without help, and that may be true, but that doesn’t mean you need their help. There are options and there are better alternatives to Center for Discovery.
went to this place almost a year ago, NEVER GO. I have now relapsed and want nothing to do with recovery because of the traumatizing experience. They are understaffed, the food is terrible, they over feed you to the… point of illness and refuse to change it. Sometimes we wouldn’t eat a meal until an hour after the scheduled time. A lot of the staff were rude and would yell at us and accuse me of doing things against the rules that I was not trying to do. We got so little sleep and were rushed so much in the morning that me and the other patients were sleep deprived to the point we could barely stay awake. I still suffer the consequences of the over feeding on my body that was not ready. They barely allow any visit time and lie to your family about progress. The directors were awful people who clearly did not understand eating disorders. The doctors also refused to listen to anything I had to say regarding concerns for my own health and well being. A little after being discharged, I was diagnosed with PTSD. Please please please, if you need help look for another program. Never go to CFD.
i came to this program twice on my own will motivated to get help. first time in 2021 the staff member named Crystal would yell at me and other patients and many of us had nightmares about her afterwards. The second… time was about 6 months ago. I only stayed there for a week because the staff were always complaining about being understaffed. we would have to wait a while to go to our rooms to sleep and theres no leniency in the morning if we got little sleep because of the night before. they also dont regulate the ac so if cold sensitivity is one of your symptoms this place will make you miserable. If youre looking for treatment this is not the right place. I would highly recommend monte nido in houston thats where i went after i left this place i went there and they were a lot more helpful and caring.
A loved one I know just spent almost 9 weeks there recently. The program is not easy as eating disorders affect everyone differently and can be very challenging to address. My loved one wanted to quit multiple times,… but with the around the clock support of the staff, techs, dieticians, therapists, and doctors, she was able to stay, improve her overall health, and be discharged as completing the program. We visited every weekend and participated in every weekly support session provided via zoom. Again, the process and experience is not easy. Tough love is sometimes necessary. It was evident the actions taken by the staff was always intended to help my loved one deal with the disorder and regain control once again. We understand the battle is by no means over, but we feel the experience and service provided by the center has better equipped us and my loved one to continue to make progress. We are extremely grateful for all the staff at the center for discovery and would highly recommend the program, but I must reiterate that the process is not easy on the family or the patients. I understand are situations all different. My loved one is extremely grateful she completed the program as are we. Thanks again.
Went here about about a year ago, and it was one of the most traumatizing experiences of my life. It was obvious that most staff members were not adequately trained or flat out did not care. On multiple occasions staff… left in the middle of their shift or just did not show up. The executive director would bring her young kids to work and they were not even kept from seeing us which I felt was against privacy and HIPAA laws. I had no idea what some of the medicine I took even was. The primary doctor there has a weird fascination with people suffering from eating disorders to the point where he glorifies them. He would tell me that the best and most successful people have eating disorders. The list goes on. Please do not go here.
I had a great experience here. All of the staff was amazing. It honestly was like a mini vacation while getting help. The house is absolutely beautiful and clean, I felt right at home. The staff there genuinely want to… help you in any way they can. I had a mental breakdown about my hair and a staff member combed my hair out with conditioner for 3 hours to get the knots out. They truly go above and beyond here.Highly recommend.
The worst place ever for recovery. If you wanna get further in your eating disorder and hate your life more you should go. Therapist always said the wrong things. Screamed at patients. Director was not very… professional. On the whole I would recommend ERC any day to this place
overall i had a good experience here but the new therapists are very unprofessional and management wont let you switch therapists which isnt a good idea because having a therapist u connect with is vital to recovery.… also the place is very understaffed at the moment and they also play favorites a lot. on the bright side i learned so much about my ed and CFD helped set me on the right track. most of the DBT groups are really beneficial. the day staff especially CB is amazing. u will make lifelong friends here and have a great experience for the most part but there is just a few problems.
The staff and peers their were so nice. I suffered from over exercising and never felt that I was good enough. They made me feel and showed me that I was good enough. I am proud to say that I am fully recovered. It took… a few months. What I had to do was change my prospective on how I viewed things. The definition of health isn't exercise. According to the World health organization its " A state of complete physical, mental, and social well being. What I made up physically I lacked socially and mentally. I now live in a life where I can proudly say I am in a state of physical, mental, and social health. Thank you Center for Discovery for letting me know that I am good enough. Much love Jesse Griego/hipa Rubix/ Cube
No room for growth. Under staffed. Counselors are over utilized. Director and milieu manager clearly exhibit favoritism. Director is two-faced and lies. Director is rarely there. The dietitian has an eating disorder and… tries to hide it.
This place made me actually want recovery. :)
⚠️PLEASE READ⚠️ i wanted to write a post about the center for discovery treatment centers. they put my life in danger, not once, but TWICE. I’m not going into much detail because i now have PTSD from these events but,… the first time i went into anaphylactic shock at the cfd outpatient and they didn’t even try to help. they told my mum i was over reacting. the second time was even more dangerous. i was headed towards cfd residential in houston and before i was even admitted i was having stomach pain. they had me eat and my pain skyrocketed. i was screaming, thrashing around and full on sobbing. my mum was in the house and they REFUSED to let me see her until i physically got up with loads of pain and saw het. i collapsed then and there sobbing even harder. i was begging for help desperately and my mum was telling them to call an ambulance because she’d never see in this much pain. ( keep in mind i have auto immune diseases and chronic illnesses ) . the nurse mouthed to my mum i was having an anxiety attack. after an hour of my shaking and sobbing, and my mum begging them to call an ambulance they did. ( also keep in mind my mum had told them to listen to me when i asked for help ) . one of the tech’s there told to EMS guy to not believe me, he then pulled my mum aside to ask if i should even go to the er. we eventually got there and i was put on two rounds of morphine that didn’t even do much for me. i got transferred to a hospital and was told my appendix was about to burst and i needed emergency surgery right away. i’m now in recovery from my surgery and let me tell you, a lot more happened with cfd. i’m traumatized. please do not EVER go to any cfd place. if my mum wasn’t there, i don’t think i would’ve gotten help and my appendix would’ve bursted and, i would’ve died. they put my life in severe danger. please consider this before going, i don’t want you to go through what i had too.
