About Higher Ground Services – Brewer
Higher Ground Services operates from 235 Center Street in Brewer. The site sits in Penobscot County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Bangor, Hampden and Orono. Maine draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Outpatient care is delivered here, alongside telehealth appointments and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Treatment Services at Higher Ground Services
Outpatient care runs to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Co-occurring mental health conditions are treated in the same building rather than split across providers. Ask what happens at the end of the program as well as the beginning, since that is where plans usually thin out. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Higher Ground Services Address, Location and Contact Information
The address is 235 Center Street, Brewer, ME 04412, in Penobscot County. The catchment reaches Bangor, Hampden and Orono. Confirm what a program covers before traveling in, since the level of care listed is not always the level with capacity.
Telehealth appointments cover some contact where travel is difficult, which removes part of the journey for people further out. Ask what a first appointment involves and how long the current wait runs before making the trip. Waiting times vary with capacity, so call ahead rather than arriving unannounced.

How do you expet to do any growth when your force to go and they wont grow
This place has a lot of resources and great counselors, and they work with you to find the right fit!! I 10/10 recommend higher ground.. I truly believe you can find a good fit here if you try!
I attended this office once. Made a point in that meeting that a lot of my issues have to do with finances. The only follow up I got in the following weeks was updates for my bills… I did not hear from any of the staff.… Now I have received a letter that I was discharged for “noncompliance”… every appointment I missed I put a note saying I couldn’t afford it. Never got any communication about that just another bill for the following appointment. This is just a money grab. Just like every other American healthcare building. Don’t come here if you’re a danger to yourself, it will just further the feelings of insignificance.
Absolutely mortified. The simple fact that they are shoving political propaganda on small children is unacceptable. It’s one thing to have views and be accepting of everyone, however shoving it down small children’s… throats is not something I am comfortable with nor will be allowing on my children’s behalf. Would not recommend.
Great crew. Jim is super- intelligent, decent, caring and put together a great group of clinicians. Highly recommended from kids to adults.
My wife was a long time patient there and now can’t even get an appointment to see her counselor. Would not recommend
Very challenging to work with. Poor communication, strict rules and very little compassion when people are in crisis. Would not recommend
Mental health is very important and when someone is saying they need to see someone but need to do it at a different time They said ok then called and said they couldn't He want to see them twice a month and said they… didnt have slots for that all they had was every wk he said he couldn't afford that so they told him all they could do was Take him off the schedule. And offered him nothing said if he couldn't do every wk then they had no slots. If that is not the most underhanded inconsiderate care for someone reaching out and to be told that.I sure hope they don't do that to all the mental health patients .Money means more then helping someone.
I'm extremely disappointed in this company! I had only done my intake and then was stood up on my first appointment with no explanation then again for the following one! I Continuously called and left voicemails for… someone to call me back to explain and reschedule just to be told I have been discharged and indirectly called a liar and hung up on! This place is completely unprofessional! Worst Counseling Center I've ever experienced!
What!…..I can only give 5 stars! 🤔 I would give 10 stars if it was an option. I have been talking to my social worker on the phone for approximately two years now. I get a full 60 minute visit with her and it helps… greatly. Early on I believe it was only a matter of a few days before they sent me up for my first appointment. Chelsea listens to me rambling on and on… And when I finally let her speak (LOL) she will come up with some good suggestions in order to help me, help myself. Therapy for me is a very slow process. Let’s face it I’ve had problems for decades… Do I really think they were all going to be solved overnight, NO! That one hour a week helps so much… And every once in a great while I need to rely on the crisis line… That’s what they are there for. I have called Higher Ground maybe three times and asked to have Chelsea return my call, and within one or two hours she gets back to me. I have zero complaints, and only great praise to give all those working at Higher Ground. ☺️👍🤟🤘✌️ 🤜💖🤛
Giving two stars for the previous intern who I saw for several weeks, she was helpful. The new intern is HORRIBLE at returning phone calls, emails, etc. I have tried for weeks to get an appointment with her and have now… given up. Tried desperately to make an appointment last week and was met with crickets. Have also emailed the director twice who was prompt in getting back to me but did not help the process. It's a shame that people like me who seek help willingly are put on the back burner for care. The whole Bangor area is horrific for getting any kind of health care in general. It's no surprise there are so many folks with deep issues up here...
Maine mental health care at its finest 🤦♀️
Terrible just simply terrible appoiments are supposed to be for 1 hour the providers here will sometimes even cut you off at 30 minutes then bill your insurance as a full visit your provider here will go on lots of free… roaming vacations so good luck working around your work schedule or anything else they are very fake and completely un sympthic as can be unprofessional place to say the least
An amazing place to find the best therapists and counselors in the Bangor/Brewer area (and probably all of Northern Maine). The staff are caring and professional. They are willing to listen to each client's individual… needs and form a treatment plan that puts the client (not just their symptoms) at the center of it. If you are in a financially difficult position, do not hesitate to talk with the front desk about how they can help you get treatment without over extending your means. The amount of healing I have experienced at Higher Ground is staggering. I feel anyone who is struggling owes it to themself to schedule a consultation. Thank you Higher Ground!
I took my son here to see Kimberly Hamill, and it was a terrible experience. Kim does not listen and is very unprofessional. My son is much better now not seeing her. Kimberly Hamill should not be in this line of work.… She lets her personal political views get in the way of her job. She has no clue what she is doing.
The owner is phenomenal. Every encounter with Jim was a positive one. We called upon Kim Hammill as a therapist to provide a safe and neutral place for our daughter and she provided substandard, unprofessional care. Her… interventions caused more damage then good. I would not recommend her. I have heard good things about the other caregivers in the practice. But we removed our daughter from Kim Hammills care and our daughter has shown improvement! Going to see Kim was a unfortunate mistake, a setback...that I hope others do not make.
Very professional and caring staff. They offer needed services for the area!
Everyone is so nice and friendly! Very casual, laid back environment. I have always been treated with respect and kindness.
Great people, Great staff...compassion, honesty, caring people.
