Treatment Centers in Maine That Accept MaineCare

MaineCare, Maine’s Medicaid program, pays for drug and alcohol rehab directly through the Office of MaineCare Services, with no managed care plan in between. Covered settings include outpatient and intensive outpatient treatment, residential treatment, non-hospital detox, opioid treatment programs and Opioid Health Homes, and Acentra Health Maine reviews the authorizations that providers request.

The programs below come from government treatment registers and Maine licensing records. Every entry carries the facility’s phone number, the levels of care it lists and any Joint Commission or CARF accreditation on record. Browse them, or filter by city, level of care or medication, to see which MaineCare programs are nearest.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Does MaineCare Cover Rehab in Maine?

Yes. MaineCare covers substance use treatment in all 16 Maine counties when a MaineCare-enrolled provider delivers medically necessary care. The Office of MaineCare Services, part of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, pays providers directly, so a member seeking Portland drug and alcohol rehabs works under the same rules as a member in Fort Kent or Machias.

MaineCare is the name Maine gives its state Medicaid program, and unlike most states it contracts with no managed care organizations and no behavioral health carve-out plan. Acentra Health Maine, formerly Kepro, serves as the Administrative Services Organization for mental health and substance use services. Acentra reviews authorization requests but neither provides nor pays for care.

Does MaineCare Cover Inpatient Rehab in Maine?

Yes. MaineCare covers residential treatment programs under Section 97 of its Benefits Manual, which pays licensed substance use treatment facilities as Private Non-Medical Institutions. The service types include Residential Rehabilitation Type I and Type II, halfway houses, extended care and adolescent residential rehabilitation. A member must meet ASAM Level III criteria to be admitted and to keep receiving that care.

Maine’s Section 1115 waiver lets MaineCare pay for substance use treatment in residential and inpatient facilities with more than 16 beds, known as institutions for mental disease. CMS first authorized it as the Substance Use Disorder Care Initiative in December 2020, then renewed it on September 25, 2026 under the name Maine’s Whole Person Care Waiver, running to September 2031.

How long will MaineCare pay for residential rehab in Maine?

MaineCare’s Section 97 rule, as current through June 2025, sets no fixed number of days for residential substance use treatment. Coverage lasts while care stays medically necessary under continued-stay review. The renewed waiver adds a statewide average length of stay target of 30 days or less for larger facilities, an average rather than a personal cap.

Does MaineCare need prior authorization for residential rehab in Maine?

Yes. Residential substance use treatment under Section 97 is subject to prior authorization and utilization review before services start. The treating provider, not the member, sends the request to Acentra Health Maine, which weighs the ASAM level alongside diagnosis, strengths, supports and the treatment plan. Any residential stay outside Maine needs its own prior authorization as well.

Does MaineCare Cover Detox in Maine?

Yes. MaineCare covers withdrawal management in two settings: non-hospital medically supervised withdrawal inside a licensed residential facility, and hospital inpatient detoxification. Acentra’s July 2026 service grid gives hospital detox a 180-day initial authorization period. Listings for Medicaid medical detox programs show which of the two settings each program offers, along with its phone number.

Does MaineCare Cover Outpatient Rehab in Maine?

Yes. MaineCare covers outpatient addiction counseling under Section 65, beginning with a comprehensive assessment and continuing with individual, family and group therapy for members at ASAM Level 0.5 or Level 1. Individual substance use therapy is limited to three hours a week and group therapy to ninety minutes, with exceptions for emergencies and medical necessity.

MaineCare’s Medicaid intensive outpatient programs run at least three hours a day, three days a week, under physician direction, for members who meet ASAM Level 2. Acentra’s July 2026 grid shows a 49-day first authorization with continued-stay reviews of up to 14 days, though Section 65 says members with opioid use disorder may start without prior authorization.

Does MaineCare Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. MaineCare covers buprenorphine, buprenorphine-naloxone, naltrexone and methadone, the four medications named in its Opioid Health Home rule, and Section 65 pays for medication management for opioid use disorder. The MaineCare Preferred Drug List in force from October 1, 2026 is published by the DHHS pharmacy unit, and members with pharmacy questions can call 1-866-796-2463.

Does MaineCare cover methadone in Maine?

Yes. MaineCare covers methadone clinic treatment through certified Opioid Treatment Programs, which deliver medical, counseling, educational, assessment and treatment services. The rule limits a first dose to 30 milligrams and the first day to 40 milligrams, and it sets eight random substance use tests a year. Copays for methadone program services carry a low weekly cap.

Does MaineCare cover Suboxone in Maine?

Yes. MaineCare’s July 2021 buprenorphine criteria made Suboxone film and generic buprenorphine-naloxone preferred products with no prior authorization when the claim carries an opioid use disorder diagnosis. Under those criteria Suboxone covered by Medicaid could run to 16 mg a day for maintenance, or 24 mg a day during a 30-day induction.

What are Opioid Health Homes in MaineCare?

Opioid Health Homes are MaineCare’s team-based model for opioid use disorder under Section 93, joining office-based medication with counseling and care management. Their levels run from intensive outpatient through induction and stabilization, maintenance and Medication Plus to a methadone health home. Naltrexone through Medicaid is one of the medication options a health home can use.

MaineCare Rehab Centers on the Coast, by the Lakes and Along the Rivers

MaineCare pays the same way on the southern coast, in the western lakes and mountains and in the river towns, because it is one statewide fee-for-service program. A coastal or lakeside setting changes the travel time, never the benefit. Members who need a ride book non-emergency transportation through a regional broker at least two business days before the appointment.

MaineCare rehab near the coast

Coastal treatment under MaineCare runs from York and Cumberland counties up through Knox and Lincoln to Hancock and Washington. Rehab centers near beaches around Old Orchard Beach, Saco and Kittery, and Rockland treatment programs on Penobscot Bay, bill MaineCare directly, so a residential stay there goes through the same Acentra review as anywhere else.

MaineCare rehab near the lakes and mountains

Western Maine’s lakes and mountains sit mostly in Oxford and Franklin counties, from Sebago Lake and Bridgton to Rumford, Rangeley and the White Mountain National Forest near Bethel. Rehabs near mountains and programs near lakes there follow the statewide MaineCare rules, and telehealth counseling is covered for members who live far from a program.

MaineCare rehab along the Kennebec and Penobscot rivers

River towns hold much of inland Maine’s treatment, from Augusta, Waterville and Skowhegan on the Kennebec to Bangor, Brewer and Old Town on the Penobscot. Rehab centers near rivers in Kennebec, Somerset and Penobscot counties fall under the same statewide program, and Old Town recovery programs sit just upriver from Bangor.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts MaineCare in Maine?

Browse the listings on this page. Each facility shown accepts MaineCare or Maine Medicaid, and the filters narrow results by city, level of care and medication. Every listing carries the program’s own phone number, so a call reaches the facility directly, and rehabs that accept Medicaid in other states sit on a separate page.

Admission to residential treatment still depends on authorization. Facility staff assess the member and send the request to Acentra Health Maine, (866) 521-0027, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Members with card or benefit questions call MaineCare Member Services at 1-800-977-6740, TTY 711, and eligibility questions go to the Office for Family Independence at 1-855-797-4357.

MaineCare rehab in Portland, South Portland and Westbrook

Cumberland County residents apply for MaineCare online at MyMaineConnection.gov or through the South Portland office of the Office for Family Independence, which must decide an application within 45 days. Once covered, members can use treatment centers in South Portland and Westbrook rehab programs on the same card, with no health plan to pick.

MaineCare rehab in Lewiston and Auburn

Androscoggin County members use the same fee-for-service benefit in Lewiston addiction treatment and Auburn recovery programs. MaineCare covers telehealth for substance use treatment there as everywhere, and phone calls without video count as virtual health visits. Telehealth stays optional, so a member can still choose in-person counseling.

Penobscot County is where many northern and eastern Maine residents look for residential care, and Bangor drug and alcohol rehabs and Brewer treatment centers bill MaineCare under the same Section 97 rules. The Office for Family Independence keeps a Bangor office for applications and renewals, according to the 2018 member handbook.

MaineCare rehab in Presque Isle, Caribou and Houlton

Aroostook County members often travel farthest for residential care, so the MaineCare ride benefit and telehealth matter there. Tribal health programs operate at Presque Isle and Houlton, and the 2018 handbook lists Native American members among those who pay no MaineCare copays. Presque Isle treatment programs and Houlton rehab services take the statewide card.

Can I use MaineCare for rehab outside Maine?

Only in limited cases. MaineCare pays for out-of-state residential treatment only when it is medically necessary and not available in Maine, and the stay needs prior authorization first. MaineCare has no out-of-network benefit of the private-insurance kind, so providers must be enrolled, although New Hampshire providers within 15 miles of the border can enroll as MaineCare providers.

How much does rehab cost with MaineCare?

Very little. MaineCare behavioral health copays are small fixed amounts tied to what MaineCare pays for each service, with daily, weekly and monthly caps, and members under 21 and pregnant members pay none. A provider cannot refuse a MaineCare service because the member cannot pay the copay at the time, though the copay is still owed.

MaineCare rules change for expansion adults on January 1, 2027, adding work requirements and six-month renewals, but people in a drug or alcohol treatment program are exempt from the work requirement. Rehab centers across Maine and Medicaid outpatient MAT clinics are listed by level of care below, each with its own phone number.
