Treatment Centers in Maine That Accept Aetna

Aetna pays for drug and alcohol rehab in Maine through employer plans and through Aetna Medicare Advantage plans, which Maine’s 2026 Medicare guide lists in every county. Aetna sells no MaineCare or marketplace coverage here. Inpatient and residential stays need precertification, while outpatient counseling and medications for addiction treatment follow each plan’s own benefit design.

Programs below are drawn from government treatment registers and Maine state licensing records. A listing gives the program’s phone number, its levels of care and any accreditation from The Joint Commission or CARF. Filter by city, setting or medication, then call the program with the Aetna member ID card ready before admission.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Does Aetna Cover Rehab in Maine?

Yes. Aetna covers substance use treatment for Maine members whose employer plan or Medicare Advantage plan includes it, and its behavioral health precertification list treats a stay in a substance use disorder facility as a covered inpatient confinement. What a member gets in rehab centers across Maine depends on the plan named on the card.

Aetna reaches Maine in three ways. Employers buy or self-fund Aetna plans nationally; Maine’s 2026 Medicare guide lists Aetna Health Inc. (ME) for HMO plans in all 16 counties and Aetna Life Insurance Company for PPO plans in eight; and two federal plans, the Mail Handlers Benefit Plan and the Rural Carrier Benefit Plan, run on Aetna’s network here.

Does Aetna Cover Inpatient Rehab in Maine?

Yes, with precertification. Aetna’s behavioral health list counts hospital stays, psychiatric hospital stays, substance use disorder facility stays and residential treatment center stays as inpatient confinements, so residential rehab programs and inpatient addiction treatment are covered on Maine plans that include them. One 2026 employer plan document lists inpatient substance use care at the semi-private room rate.

Does Aetna need precertification for residential rehab in Maine?

Yes. Aetna requires precertification for inpatient confinements, residential treatment and partial hospitalization on commercial and Medicare Advantage plans, and providers call 1-888-632-3862 for commercial plans or 1-800-624-0756 for Medicare plans. With an out-of-network facility the Maine member, not the facility, must arrange it. Traditional Choice, indemnity plans and federal employee plans fall outside that list.

What criteria does Aetna use to authorize rehab in Maine?

Aetna applies The ASAM Criteria, Third Edition, to addiction services, with LOCUS for adult psychiatric care and CALOCUS-CASII for children and adolescents. Its own Clinical Policy Bulletins and MCG guidelines serve as supplemental criteria. Behavioral health review is run inside Aetna rather than by an outside vendor, so Aetna’s own clinicians decide a Maine admission.

Does Aetna Cover Detox in Maine?

Yes. Aetna covers medical detox with insurance in two ways. Ambulatory or outpatient detox with medication is listed as a covered service in one 2026 employer plan document and has needed no precertification since January 1, 2019, while inpatient detox counts as an inpatient confinement and needs precertification before admission.

Does Aetna Cover Outpatient Rehab in Maine?

Yes. Aetna plans cover outpatient addiction counseling, and the same 2026 employer document lists partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs and peer counseling for substance-related disorders. Intensive outpatient has not appeared on Aetna’s precertification list since 2019, so a Maine program can usually start it right away. Partial hospitalization still does, so that level needs approval before it starts.

Aetna names CVS Virtual Care and Teladoc Health for virtual therapy and psychiatry, which matters in rural Maine, although in-person mental health care at MinuteClinic is not listed for Maine. Employers can add Resources For Living, Aetna’s employee assistance program, which offers a set number of free counseling sessions, and online rehab and telehealth options vary by employer plan.

Does Aetna Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications in Maine?

Yes, under the pharmacy and medical benefits of each plan. Aetna dropped prior authorization for buprenorphine products such as Suboxone on its commercial plans in March 2017, and CVS Caremark, its sister company, runs Aetna pharmacy benefits. Maine members look up a drug by plan year and plan name on Aetna’s medication search, because formularies vary from plan to plan.

Does Aetna cover Suboxone in Maine?

Yes, on commercial plans without prior authorization since March 2017, though the tier and copay depend on the employer’s drug list. Suboxone and buprenorphine with insurance is also covered for Aetna Medicare Advantage members across Maine’s sixteen counties through Part D drug coverage or through Medicare-enrolled opioid treatment programs.

Does Aetna Medicare cover methadone in Maine?

Yes. Medicare covers methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone for opioid use disorder through enrolled Opioid Treatment Programs, along with counseling, drug testing and peer support, and Aetna Medicare Advantage plans in Maine must cover at least that. Methadone treatment clinics and naltrexone with insurance options both appear in the filters.

Aetna Rehab Centers on the Southern Coast, Near Ski Country and by the Bays

Aetna’s Maine coverage changes more by plan type than by scenery. The Aetna Medicare HMO runs statewide, while the Aetna Medicare PPO covers only Androscoggin, Cumberland, Franklin, Kennebec, Lincoln, Oxford, Sagadahoc and York counties. Employer plans follow the employer’s network wherever the member lives, so the setting matters most for Medicare members choosing between the HMO and the PPO.

Aetna rehab near the southern Maine beaches

York and Cumberland counties hold nearly all of Maine’s long sandy beaches, from Kittery and York north through Ogunquit and Old Orchard Beach to Scarborough. Both counties carry the Aetna Medicare HMO and PPO, so rehabs near beaches and treatment programs in Biddeford can be reached on either Medicare plan type.

Aetna rehab near the western ski areas and national forest

Western Maine’s ski country sits in Oxford and Franklin counties, around Bethel, Rangeley and Carrabassett Valley, with the White Mountain National Forest along the New Hampshire line. Both counties are in the Aetna Medicare PPO area as well as the HMO area. Rehabs near ski resorts and programs near national forests fall under the same precertification rules.

Aetna rehab near Penobscot Bay and Frenchman Bay

Knox, Waldo and Hancock counties wrap around Penobscot Bay and Frenchman Bay, from Rockland and Belfast to Ellsworth and Bar Harbor. Maine’s 2026 guide lists only the Aetna Medicare HMO in those three counties, not the PPO. Rehabs near bays and Belfast recovery programs take Aetna employer plans on each employer’s network terms.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Aetna in Maine?

Browse the listings on this page. Each program shown lists Aetna or private insurance, and the filters narrow them by city, level of care and medication. Every listing gives the facility’s own phone number, so the first call reaches the program, and rehabs accepting private insurance outside Maine sit on a separate page.

Admission runs through Aetna’s precertification for residential, inpatient and partial hospitalization care. The facility calls the precertification number on the member’s card, or the member makes the call when the program is out of network. Aetna Medicare members in Maine reach the plan at (833) 570-6670, TTY 711, the number Maine’s 2026 guide gives for both Aetna contracts.

Aetna rehab in Portland and Cumberland County

Cumberland County Aetna members have the widest Medicare choice in Maine, with both the HMO and the PPO on the 2026 list. Employer members in Portland addiction treatment and Westbrook treatment centers use their employer’s Aetna network, and PPO or POS designs such as Choice POS II keep out-of-network benefits.

Androscoggin County appears in a real Maine Aetna document: one Lewiston college’s 2026 Aetna Choice POS II summary shows a flat in-network copay for outpatient mental health and substance use visits, 20% coinsurance out of network, and coinsurance for inpatient stays. Lewiston rehab programs and treatment in Auburn take such plans.

Aetna rehab in Augusta and Waterville

Kennebec County carries both Aetna Medicare plan types, and many state and federal workers live there. Postal and federal employees on the Mail Handlers Benefit Plan use Aetna’s Choice POS II network in every state, so Augusta drug and alcohol rehabs and Waterville treatment programs can be in network for them too.

Aetna rehab in Bangor and Penobscot County

Penobscot County is HMO-only territory for Aetna Medicare in 2026, so Aetna Medicare members near Bangor need in-network programs outside emergencies. Employer members keep the network their employer chose, and a Choice POS II or Open Choice PPO member there still has out-of-network benefits. Bangor treatment centers and Brewer rehab services list the insurance they accept on each facility page.

Can I use Aetna for rehab outside Maine?

Often. Aetna employer plans use a national network, which helps Maine members looking at programs in New Hampshire, and POS and PPO designs pay out of network at a lower level, while HMO and EPO plans cover out-of-network care only in emergencies. Asking Aetna to treat an out-of-state program as in network needs precertification unless it is an emergency.

How much does rehab cost with Aetna in Maine?

Costs follow the plan. Aetna employer plans usually charge a flat copay for outpatient visits and coinsurance after the deductible for inpatient stays, and out-of-network providers can bill above Aetna’s allowed amount. For 2026 Aetna advertised zero-cost routine behavioral health visits on certain Medicare Advantage plans when members use a high-value provider.

Aetna is one of several ways treatment is paid for in Maine, alongside MaineCare, Original Medicare, the federal employee plans and other private insurers. Listings also show Medicaid-funded programs and sliding scale rehab for members whose deductible is high, and each facility page shows the insurers it works with.
