About Northwood Health Systems – Wheeling
Northwood Health Systems operates from 1819 Wood Street in Wheeling. The site sits in Ohio County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Benwood, Bethlehem and Clearview. West Virginia draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Detox, intensive outpatient and outpatient care are delivered here, alongside medication-assisted treatment, telehealth appointments and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves.

Detox and Rehab Services at Northwood Health Systems
Withdrawal management covers alcohol, benzodiazepine, cocaine, methamphetamine and opioid dependence and is handled on site rather than referred elsewhere. Stepping down into continuing care happens with the same team, so there is no second intake to sit through. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Buprenorphine and naltrexone are available and paired with counseling rather than prescribed alone. Co-occurring mental health conditions are treated in the same building rather than split across providers. Assessment decides the level of care, so ask what that involves and how quickly it can happen.

Northwood Health Systems Reviews and Ratings
Reviews of Northwood Health Systems come from patients, family members and professionals who refer to the facility, and from sources around the web.
Each one reflects a single experience. Reading several, alongside the licensing detail on this page, gives a more balanced view.
Left there after 9 days of inpatient, group counseling all day everyday, received a Vivatrol injection and have not drank or craved alcohol in the last 15 months. Before my visit to Northwood I spent 25 years drinking,… battling severe alcohol addiction. With the right counselors, attitude, timing and meds if recommended this place can help change your life for the better.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t understand HOW going to group from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. is supposed to help us at all. Most times, I felt like I was at a dorm and going to classes for becoming a psychiatrist or a… therapist. I had a really bad panic attack when I was there from hardly any sleep and one of the residents giving me a hard time. One of the therapists/psychiatrists helped me to calm down and feel better. Five stars to him! I can’t say the same about the staff at the front desk or the nurses. When I couldn’t fall asleep from my anxiety, they acted like I was bothering them. Honestly, you’re better off just working with your own doctor and psychiatrist/therapist to get your anxiety under control.
My husband went into Northwood and when he left he was not given the medication he brought in himself. Nobody seems to know where this medicine is and they don’t seem to care either. Northwood does not care about its… clients; it’s all about the money!!!! The nurses were extremely unprofessional also.
Ignorance is like a disease there, wear a mask if you go🙏🏾
A varied array of services helping a wide range of people including IOP and dui classes. They've always treated me well and I'd recommend them.
Very good service
Northwood has helped us over the years for my son's care. Everyone has been professional helpful.
Very friendly people work there and Martha is awesome
Great and friendly staff couldn't ask for anything better.
I give 5 * bc of my therapist her name is Kayla she is very good that is the only reason I give 5 if it weren't for her I would have quit all together she is very good and listens to me she hears me and remembers the… sessions we've talked about keep up the great work Kayla
If it wouldn't have been for part of the staff I would have had a hard time giving one star. Most of the people are hard working and the nicest of people who really care about their clients. They keep the place clean… and make sure you are taken care of. The medical staff is basically a worthless group of people with the exception of a couple who actually do seem to care. I've had a cold or the flu for 2 days. The morning nurse gave me a couple Tylenol and a couple ibuprofen, which was the most I got for the rest of the day. The day nurse just laughed at me when I asked her for something that evening. The night nurse gave me 2 ibuprofen. The CRNP on the morning shift said she would take my temperature and get something to help me. Then she went to her office for 4 hours. When I finally got to see her she asked how I was feeling and proceeded to tell me she hoped I felt better. I was there a week in horrible pain and no sleep and I don't think I've ever seen medical professionals with less compassion and caring than the ones here. If you expect to get any medical help stay away. Otherwise it's a good facility and most of the people are the best. The rest are the worst.
Amazing and caring staff here! Very very on top of all medical needs & you actually physically see & talk to a Nurse Practitioner every single day you are there! As well as video appointments with a therapist weekly if… not more! Very clean environment & living space! Smoke breaks hourly! Detox is rough but I see why they do it the way they do! Group meetings all day long, 8am-930pm every single day(some learning, some music, some games, some coloring or journaling, some patient picks, and some therapeutic)meal breaks(3-30 minute meals) & smoke breaks every 10 til the hour! Lots to drink, healthy snacks, you keep your cellphone on you at all times!! State provides meals, snacks, drinks, cigarettes(yes smokes), transportation, hygiene, medication, and even clothing or shoes if you have none!!! I met the most amazing & the most kind hearted people at this place! Thank you Northwoods and thank you STACEY for helping me get into Rehab as fast as you did! 5-7 people within 2-3 days she got placed! Thank you everyone for your kindness while I was in such an emotional and fragile state I was in & being new to that type of assistance! Prayers I never have to come again but will choose your facility if I have to 1,000 times over!!!
The front desk never answer the phone
Tiffany was amazing to me over the phone. Very compassionate, while staying confidational. 5 stars for customer service
My daughter was/is experiencing a mental health crisis and the facility at the Weirton office has been AMAZING! They went above and beyond what they were required to do to help us and I am so thankful. I would like to… mention one person in particular and that is Kara B - You are an amazing woman and professional! Biggest thanks go out to you!
My son’s dad checked himself in as he was struggling with some mental health issues, funny how they discharged him because he didn’t “have an active addiction” and refused to help him with the issues he was having
Don’t believe half any of the bad review you read about this place people go here because they either want help or there forced to get help and just because there isn’t any instant gratification people wanna talk bad… about this place when it comes to recovery work you only get out of it what you put into it and the people that are talking bad about this place are probably the ones that received the help that they needed and not the help that they wanted!!! Hurt people hurt people. This is a great facility with great people recovery isn’t easy but don’t try to hurt an establishment that is only trying to help the people that need it!!!
I spoke with a lady named Tiffany today and she was so rude. I know people are busy but when dealing with people with mental health issues they should screen their employees and make sure the staff that they have are… caring individuals and not ones that sound angry and tired of doing their jobs. Truly, Candy Fahey
They gave out my freaking clothes and drinks. We were mostly detoxing and were forced to go to 13 hours of groups. You get check ins, zero therapy and meds that make you worse. It's a "giant messed up orge" aka… clusterf#@*.
They say they are a mental health place but they haven't a clue what your talking about when you call and try to get help for someone you can't get it! Mom called my brother's case worker twice and left a message both… times still no call back been almost a week. If you need mental help go somewhere else they don't help you
This place has caused me more stress and problems then I already had , not sure what or how they can or would help anyone else out if they can't help me , what little hope I had is definitely gone now for sure , I feel… so helpless at this point , that was pretty much my only and last resort and when I was told to come in and I could get both some rest and help with some issues however upon arrival I was told there's no rooms or opening and told to come back in the following morning, waist of ALL
Nobody ever picks up the phone there. A joke.
Northwood has the friendliest staff of all the inpatient facilities I've ever been in. You can check yourself in voluntarily and as long as you behave you can leave when you want. The staff is very well-trained, the… food is excellent, and they are generous enough to give you either a Sonoma full flavor or a Sonoma Menthol every hour during working hours. Please seek help at Northwood if you're having any kind of mental or emotional problems including problems with addiction to illicit drugs. Thank you very much.
I am a mental health patient. The staff did not want to discharge me. Personal belongings were stolen. The things I shared to staff were not true. I hate they note what you say and will not let you leave. I could not… wait to leave facility
