Wisconsin Physicians Service (WPS)

Rehabs That Take Wisconsin Physicians Service (WPS)

Wisconsin Physicians Service, known as WPS Health Insurance, is a health insurer based in Madison, Wisconsin. WPS plans can include coverage for drug and alcohol treatment, with benefits varying by plan, network and level of care. Some members hold WPS coverage through an employer or a Wisconsin care organization partnership.

Wisconsin facilities on this page name WPS on their own websites. WPS also administers some federal programs, so make sure the center knows which WPS plan you hold. Before admission, contact the facility and WPS to check network status, any prior authorization or referral requirement, and the out-of-pocket costs that may apply.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does WPS cover rehab?

Yes. Wisconsin Physicians Service treats substance use disorder care as a covered behavioral health benefit on its individual PPO policy, which pays for inpatient hospital treatment, transitional treatment such as residential and intensive outpatient programs, and outpatient visits. Employer plan benefits vary, and short-term plans may exclude substance use entirely.

Self-funded employer coverage branded WPS Powered by Auxiant follows each employer's own plan document, so the covered levels of care are set by that employer rather than by WPS.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Does WPS cover detox?

Yes, within a hospital. The WPS individual PPO policy lists inpatient hospital services for detoxification among its covered behavioral health services, so medically supervised withdrawal is a benefit. Inpatient behavioral health admissions need prior authorization, which WPS Health Insurance Medical Management handles at 800-333-5003.

Emergency and urgent care need no prior authorization, so a loved one in acute withdrawal can be treated first and the stay reviewed afterward.

Medical Detoxhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/detox-centers/medical-detox/
Does WPS cover inpatient or residential rehab?

Yes to both. Inpatient hospital care for substance use disorders is covered on the individual PPO policy, and residential treatment programs are covered under transitional treatment. The program must be certified by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, or meet similar requirements in the state where it operates.

Prior authorization applies to inpatient and residential behavioral health admissions, and WPS can ask for an illness and treatment history plus a progress report with objectives, goals and duration.

Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation, which trades as WPS Health Insurance, is an independent not-for-profit health insurer founded in 1946 and based in Madison. It sells employer plans, one off-Marketplace individual PPO, short-term plans and Medicare supplement insurance, and the line on the card decides what addiction treatment is paid for and how it has to be authorized.

WPS is also a federal claims contractor. It is the Medicare Administrative Contractor for Jurisdiction 5 (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska) and Jurisdiction 8 (Indiana and Michigan), the prime contractor for TRICARE For Life claims, and a subcontractor on TRICARE East and TRICARE Overseas. That work is claims administration for the federal government, not a WPS health plan, so a program that says it “bills WPS” may be describing Original Medicare or TRICARE rather than commercial coverage.

This guide sets out which levels of care the WPS individual policy names, where prior authorization applies and who reviews it, what a 2026 plan leaves a member paying, how medication is handled through the pharmacy benefit, and how to work out which programs sit inside the WPS network.
