Treatment Centers in District of Columbia That Accept AmeriHealth Caritas

AmeriHealth Caritas DC pays for drug and alcohol rehab for District residents in DC Medicaid and the Healthy DC Plan, covering detox, residential treatment, counseling and medication assisted treatment at no cost to enrollees. Since August 1, 2026 it has also served former Wellpoint DC enrollees, who were assigned to the plan when Wellpoint left DC Medicaid.

Listings below show each program’s phone number, levels of care and accreditation, taken from government treatment registers and District licensing records. Sort them by neighborhood, setting or medication. An AmeriHealth Caritas DC card names the program, Medicaid or Healthy DC, and the Enrollee Services number that handles benefits and authorization questions.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Does AmeriHealth Caritas Cover Rehab in Washington, DC?

Yes. AmeriHealth Caritas DC covers drug and alcohol rehab for its DC Medicaid and Healthy DC Plan enrollees, and its enrollee handbook lists diagnostic assessment, crisis services, care coordination, counseling, psychotherapy, therapeutic groups, medication assisted treatment, inpatient detox and residential treatment as substance use services at treatment programs in the District.

AmeriHealth Caritas DC is one of two managed care plans in DC Healthy Families, with MedStar Family Choice DC, under contracts the Department of Health Care Finance awarded from April 1, 2023. Its parent, AmeriHealth Caritas, is based in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, works in 13 states and the District, and is a separate company from the New Jersey insurer AmeriHealth.

What changed for AmeriHealth Caritas DC in August 2026?

Wellpoint DC left DC Medicaid on August 1, 2026, and its enrollees were assigned automatically to AmeriHealth Caritas DC. Until October 31, 2026 the plan honors prior authorizations, referrals and active prescriptions issued before August 1, and treatment already underway continues for up to 60 days or the end of that transition, whichever applies.

Does AmeriHealth Caritas Cover Inpatient Rehab in Washington, DC?

Yes. Residential treatment and inpatient withdrawal management are both on the plan’s substance use benefit list, and AmeriHealth Caritas DC requires prior authorization for every elective or urgent inpatient service. Medicaid residential rehab programs and long-term rehab with Medicaid are listed for District enrollees.

How long does AmeriHealth Caritas DC cover residential treatment?

AmeriHealth Caritas DC sets the length through authorization and review, within the District’s Medicaid demonstration, which aims for an average residential and inpatient stay of no more than 30 days across the program. The plan’s Behavioral Health Utilization Management team, which programs reach at 1-877-464-2911, handles those requests for District enrollees.

How does an AmeriHealth Caritas DC enrollee get rehab authorized?

The program usually requests it, and enrollees with questions call the prior authorization line, (202) 408-2237, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. No primary care referral is needed for behavioral health care, but the program must be in the AmeriHealth Caritas DC network unless the plan authorizes an outside provider in writing.

Does AmeriHealth Caritas Cover Detox in Washington, DC?

Yes. Inpatient withdrawal management is a listed benefit, and the enrollee handbook says the plan can help arrange detox along with care coordination afterward. Because detox is an inpatient service, it falls under the plan’s inpatient authorization rule, and Medicaid-covered medical detox is one of the listing filters for District programs.

Does AmeriHealth Caritas Cover Outpatient Rehab in Washington, DC?

Yes. Counseling, psychotherapy and therapeutic groups are covered, along with two named approaches for younger enrollees and families: the Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach and motivational enhancement therapy combined with cognitive behavioral therapy. Intensive outpatient taking Medicaid and partial hospitalization with Medicaid are listed too.

Enrollees aged 13 and older can also text an emotional support coach through Headspace at any hour, with guided meditation and sleep programs at no cost. Healthy DC Plan enrollees reach a separate Enrollee Services line, 1-844-214-2470, which can connect them to drug and alcohol treatment programs and answer benefit questions about them.

Does AmeriHealth Caritas Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications in DC?

Yes. Medication assisted treatment is on the plan’s substance use benefit list, covered prescriptions cost enrollees nothing, and the District’s Medicaid demonstration waives pharmacy copays for members on these medications. Drugs not on the formulary generally need prior authorization requested by the doctor, and PerformSpecialty, the plan’s specialty pharmacy partner, handles specialty drugs.

Does AmeriHealth Caritas DC cover methadone?

Yes, as part of medication assisted treatment, which the plan lists for all enrollees. An enrollee confirms with Enrollee Services that one of the District’s methadone treatment clinics is in the AmeriHealth Caritas DC network before starting, since out-of-network care is covered only with authorization or when no network provider can deliver it.

Does AmeriHealth Caritas DC cover Suboxone?

Yes. Buprenorphine treatment falls under the medication assisted treatment benefit, and the plan’s searchable formulary shows any prior authorization or quantity rule for a specific product. While a prior authorization is pending, an enrollee can receive up to 72 hours of the medication, and buprenorphine maintenance with Medicaid is a listing filter.

Does AmeriHealth Caritas DC cover Vivitrol and naltrexone?

Yes, under the same medication benefit, with the plan’s searchable formulary setting the rules for each form, tablet or injection. Pharmacy Enrollee Services, 1-888-452-3647, answers pharmacy questions, and naltrexone treatment taking Medicaid and Medicaid Vivitrol shot programs show which District sites offer the medication.

AmeriHealth Caritas Rehab Centers by the Anacostia, Oxon Run and the Potomac

AmeriHealth Caritas DC uses one network across all eight wards, so a program’s setting changes the view, not the coverage. East of the river, the Anacostia shoreline and the wooded valley of Oxon Run Park run through Wards 7 and 8, while the Potomac and the Washington Channel frame the city’s southwest edge.

AmeriHealth Caritas rehab along the Anacostia

The Anacostia River passes Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Kingman Island and Anacostia Park on its way to the Potomac, with Deanwood rising to the east in Ward 7. Rehab centers near a river and Deanwood treatment programs show whether they are in the AmeriHealth Caritas DC network, and residential stays there are authorized in advance.

AmeriHealth Caritas rehab near Oxon Run Park

Oxon Run Park follows a stream valley along the southern edge of Ward 8, below Congress Heights and Washington Highlands. Congress Heights rehab programs list whether they take AmeriHealth Caritas DC, and enrollees there can reach the plan’s Enrollee Services line at any hour with benefit questions.

AmeriHealth Caritas rehab by the Potomac waterfront

The Washington Channel and its marinas line the Southwest Waterfront before the channel opens into the Potomac at Hains Point. Rehab programs near harbors and Navy Yard recovery programs along the Anacostia follow AmeriHealth Caritas DC’s inpatient authorization rule, the same as any other District address.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts AmeriHealth Caritas in Washington, DC?

Browse the listings on this page. Each is a District program that lists AmeriHealth Caritas DC or Medicaid, with its phone number, levels of care and accreditation, and filters narrow them by neighborhood and treatment. Rehabs that accept AmeriHealth have a separate page, and Medicaid rehab programs are listed nationally.

Admission to residential or inpatient care runs through AmeriHealth Caritas DC prior authorization, which the program requests from the plan. Enrollees who would rather change plans can ask DC Healthy Families, 202-639-4030 or 800-620-7802, and former Wellpoint enrollees may switch to MedStar Family Choice DC until January 31, 2027 with the same benefits.

AmeriHealth Caritas rehab in Columbia Heights and Petworth

Columbia Heights and Petworth line the Fourteenth Street and Georgia Avenue corridors of Wards 1 and 4. Healthy DC Plan enrollees there with AmeriHealth Caritas cards pay nothing for covered care, and Columbia Heights treatment centers and Petworth rehab options show whether they accept the plan.

AmeriHealth Caritas rehab in Brookland and Trinidad

Brookland and Trinidad sit in Ward 5, between the Red Line and the National Arboretum. Former Wellpoint DC enrollees there now hold AmeriHealth Caritas DC cards unless they chose MedStar, keep any Wellpoint prior authorization through October 31, 2026, and Brookland treatment programs and Trinidad rehab centers list the plans they take.

AmeriHealth Caritas rehab in Anacostia and Capitol Hill

Anacostia and Capitol Hill face each other across the Anacostia River, joined by the 11th Street and Frederick Douglass bridges. Enrollees on both banks use the same AmeriHealth Caritas DC network, and rehab programs in Anacostia and Capitol Hill recovery centers show their accepted Medicaid plans.

Can I use AmeriHealth Caritas DC for rehab in Maryland or Virginia?

Only with the plan’s approval. AmeriHealth Caritas DC covers out-of-network care only when no network provider can perform a covered service, usually with written prior authorization, and an enrollee planning routine care out of town must call the plan first or may owe the bill. Emergency care anywhere needs no authorization.

How much does rehab cost with AmeriHealth Caritas DC?

Nothing for covered services from network providers. The plan’s sample ID card shows no copay for office visits, prescriptions or emergency room care, and the plan does not charge enrollees for covered services. Healthy DC Plan enrollees also pay no premiums and no out-of-pocket costs, and dental and vision are added to that plan in 2027.

AmeriHealth Caritas DC is one of several ways District residents pay for treatment, alongside MedStar Family Choice DC and the Department of Behavioral Health’s certified substance use providers across all eight wards. Listings also show programs accepting Medicaid and state funded outpatient rehab for residents waiting on enrollment.
