PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: A Warning for Vulnerable Patients "While the Moab Regional Recovery Center is a vital resource, patients should be aware of the clinical history of its Medical Director, Dr. Paula Cook. As… a former patient of Dr. Cook’s at Project Reality, St. Mark’s, and the Martindale Clinic (Odyssey House) in Salt Lake City, I am sharing this as a matter of public safety. My experience across these three facilities suggests a troubling pattern of ‘defensive charting’ and institutional retaliation used to silence patient advocacy. In my case, this involved the repeated suppression of formal safety mandates from my Neurologist at the Moran Eye Center (Dr. Judith Warner) and unauthorized changes to my life-sustaining heart medications, as documented by Walgreens Pharmacy. Most concerning is a history of Medical Abandonment. Following my attempts to advocate for my own safety at her clinics, I was subjected to a retaliatory discharge and left with only a 2-day supply of high-risk medication—a move that intentionally triggered a medical emergency. Dr. Cook holds significant power as a Medical Director and University of Utah faculty member, but power does not excuse a disregard for the Standard of Care or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). I have formally involved the DOJ, the Utah State Auditor, and DOPL to ensure this pattern of ‘labeling’ and abandoning patients does not follow her to Moab. If you are a patient here, keep your own records, verify your specialist orders, and know your rights. Accountability is the only way to ensure 'compassionate care' is more than just a slogan."
