Oceans Behavioral Hospital – Amarillo Detox and Rehab Services

Oceans Behavioral Hospital – Amarillo is recorded as offering residential treatment, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient. The structured element runs during the day and people go home afterwards. Which of these is appropriate depends on an assessment, not on what sounds manageable at the time.

Co-occurring mental health conditions are addressed alongside substance use, which is the approach the evidence supports. The weekly time commitment varies considerably between providers, so establish it early rather than after admission.

I can’t begin to express how thankful I am for this facility and the help I received. If you give it a chance it’ll make a difference in your life. The instructors were amazing. I want to specifically thank Jennifer… lead tech, Daylee, Nina, Maesha, Ashlyn, nurse Olu, Jay, the female custodian, Sierra.. thank you so much for everything yall did for us. I spent my birthday here and the staff went out of their way to make my day special. Specifically Jay, and Jennifer thank you. I met some pretty amazing people, both staff and patients who touched my heart.

I went in for help with depression and anxiety, not knowing what to do. I spoke with this doctor who completely turned everything I was saying around and made it seem like I was literally crazy with schizophrenia. That… was not the case at all. I had no symptoms of that. I was literally depressed and just needed help and they made it into something it wasn’t. I wasn’t allowed to leave, I could not AMA out. I could not speak to my family. Worst place to seek help. If I could give an eighth of a star, they’d be lucky to have it. Run from this place, try anywhere but this place.

Professional and carrying staff helped me through some of the most difficult times in my life. There is not enough space here for me to detail the gratitude I have for those here at Oceans.

They barely have time to talk on the phones to their loved ones everyday. You have other patients in the background yelling at other patients to give them the phone. My mom went in there voluntary and was just there to… lower her meds. After they had lowered the meds she sounded fine and was ready to go home. Then all of a sudden they make the decision to add on two medications that she doesn't need whatsoever to make her kind of sedated for no reason. It went from hearing from her at least once a day for a couple minutes went from that to not even hearing from her for 2 days and each call she sounds more confused and more drowsy. Whenever she is discharged I will come back to this review and change my rating if I think I should. But as of right now I would give zero stars if I could. Because she was fine once they lowered her meds and that's all she wanted to go there for and she was voluntary. After adding the new medication she sounds completely out of it and confused. If you have other options to bring your loved one to please go to the other place I would not trust bringing a loved one here. Also whenever you try to get in contact with this hospital to check on your loved one to get any updates nobody will answer and it'll go straight to voicemail. I have tried every number listed on the numbers they give you to get into contact with such as a director for the nursing station or someone you can get in contact to know more about your loved one. No one has answered any of those phone calls and hasn't even called back.

The night staff are horrible! Trying to sleep and they slam doors and talk loud like it’s a party! The male Deon (probably spelled wrong) played dominos with residents and didn’t do his job! The females just sat on… their phones. They do NOTHING! All of them need to go somewhere else if they don’t care! Now the day time staff are amazing!!! They all did their job and cared for all of us!

Like an earlier review, I had mixed feelings about my stay with Oceans Inpatient. Not all bad, but much was wrong here. There were several staff members that were amazing at their job, friendly, helpful, and kind. There… were also a few that were not so. To the ones that were the 1st type, it's because of you that this place has 2 extra stars instead of just 1. Aside from the staff, which was usually stretched thin due to ongoing needs, were the other issues. 1. For me and for others during my stay, my medicinal needs were barely, if at all, being met. My blood sugars were allowed to go high because I wasn't allowed to continue doing my insulin the way I had done so at home before, and their own preferred method was forced upon me and shoved down my throat whether I liked it or not. 2. There's only 1 main bathroom in the main area for everyone to use during the day, but it's locked 24/7, so having to ask a tech or other person for a key to go to the bathroom gets annoying and there's not always someone available to open it, which means waiting to do your business, and that can be disastrous for those who absolutely cannot wait. Also, not everyone is exactly clean using the bathroom and it's shared by all the current patients during the day, clean or not (some patients are elderly and wheelchair bound and it cannot be helped that they inadvertently make a bit of an mess). 3. Drinks are supplied by the techs, either on a cart with small styrofoam cups of water, lemonade (which was often weak and watered down as others were telling me as I cannot drink sugar filled drinks being a diabetic), or unsweet tea rolled out periodically throughout the day at snack times and meals, or ice water filled into a large plastic cup that is given you as you are admitted initially. The problem, again, is that to get the drinks, you are reliant on the techs to supply them or fill your cup up, as access to such is behind a locked door labeled "nutrition." If you are thirsty in-between snacks and meals, and want your cup filled with ice water, you have to ask a tech to do it, and that's IF one can be found and asked to do so. If they are a generally nice person, it can be iffy to ask, but no big deal. If they are not so nice, you might prefer to steer clear and that will mean waiting and suffering without a drink until one can be obtained otherwise. This is particularly difficult if you are a diabetic and your sugar goes high, because like me you will become increasingly thirsty. Many times, techs are often preoccupied with unruly patients or other duties or are already assisting other patients and cannot be available to help you. Lastly, there's no soda or otherwise available period. It either water, tea, or lemonade. End of story. 4. Food was not always absolutely terrible tasting, and often could be decent in flavor, but was never really all that good and, worst yet, was extremely monotonous and the same food was served basically day after day on a biweekly rotating schedule. There was little to no variety in it. Every day for breakfast, for example, was eggs, a biscuit, a scoop of warm oats and either 3 slices of bacon, a slice of ham, or 2 sausage patties. The oats were always plain and needed sugar or salt added. Not terrible, but for a week or two it became old quickly. Where's the biscuits and gravy, pancakes, waffles, omelets, etc? Where's the butter, fruit, and/or cinnamon for the oats? There was also ONLY Sweet N' Low (pink packets) for non-sugar based sweetener option available (stuff's disgusting in my opinion) as a diabetic, so I just eventually ended up salting them a little for flavor in the end. A variety of foods and condiments would do wonders for this place during the stay. 5. Extreme Bordem. There's often little to do during free time aside from read a book (if you can find one or have one brought to you from home), chat with other patients if they are coherent, color/draw, or watch the show picked by one person inside the tv room. What movie/show type was allowed depended on the in-charge person and varied. End

With optimism and hope, understanding the process and recognizing that this hospital strives to do their best to act as an outreach for those whom are in need of mental wellness, looking for answers on how to overcome… obstacles that overwhelm their capacity to deal with the stress of living life on life's terms, whether it be their choice or a choice made for them by a loved one, or that of someone acting on their behalf in their inability to do so, I give them an E for effort. Most of the staff does their best to execute their job qualifications with professionalism and patience, especially with the wide variety of extreme highs and lows accompanied with every single patient encounter, on a regular daily basis. First and foremost, they deserve recognition and appreciation for their care and concern. Yes, it was weird and uncomfortable, intimidating at first, to say the least, not knowing what to expect and trying to go with the flow of things and how they flow. At the end of the day, they treat everyone with respect and dignity. They did their absolute best to meet the demands of everyone, regardless if they were upset they were there in the first place, to treat their patients as equals in God's love. Thank you all for the motivation and encouragement. The world needs more people like those of you whom choose such a profession with such complexity. I pray that the gratification that comes from helping those whom appreciate what you all do, trumps that of the ones who have yet to be able to.

I was really hoping all of the negative reviews were from disgruntled patients. Unfortunately, the reviews are correct. Please don’t send your loved ones here. I left Oceans today and received none of the care I was… anticipating. I voluntarily came in. I saw a psychiatrist one time for less than five minutes via FaceTime. He agreed to see me the next day but never saw me again. I received no counseling or therapy. I was told I could bring in new, unopened toiletries, which is not true. I was never even offered a towel to shower with. Food allergies of patients were ignored. One patient complained of feeling dizzy for two hours. It wasn’t until their vision was lost that their blood pressure was finally checked; it was at a critical level. The nighttime techs were rude. I was woken up by someone flipping lights on then leaving my room. I was put on multiple sedating medications with no follow up or even explanation. It will take me days to detox from the mess they made. I cannot express the disappointment I feel. I am livid. You have no rights at Oceans. You have no voice. It takes an incredible amount to reach out for help during distress. To be met with the level of care of received is a slap in the face. What a disgrace to the Panhandle and those struggling with mental health. Oceans: do not tell me my concerns are heard or encourage me to call. I told you my concerns. So have the other reviews. Fix your facility and your staff. I have no interest in wasting anymore time on you.

I'll give it a one. Not a zero because the place didn't deserve a zero, but not a two because the place wasn't good enough for a two. My daughter went there; she was 13, and she told me every little detail she could… within the 10 minutes of call time. The techs, some of them were not bad; she said one of the night techs with like a galaxy look to her was very sweet; she loved that tech. A day one with blonde hair, loved her also because she was also sweet, and since she was a mom, she treated the kids with care like they were her own. She loved that. Another day, tech, she didn't know how to describe her, but she was quiet, but when she did talk, she was so sweet. She had some mental health issues of her own and was very understanding. But she didn't say anything good about the other techs because she said they were very negative. She said that they had very bad attitude problems that made the air around them negative, which was very uncomfortable for my daughter. The therapist, Sarah, I think was her name, my daughter absolutely LOVED her. She said that she wasn't judgmental, and when she told her, or any of the kids told her about their issues, she didn't make excuses for them. She didn't say anything that shadowed their illness; she didn't make them feel judged or not important. She was very patient, very understanding, and gave them advice to handle their mental health. And was overall the person my daughter liked most there. What she didn't like, though, was how often they made them go outside, especially since it was cold during her stay. I get that having some sunshine is important, but when it's for hours on end, it gets to a point. She said that they'd wake up, check vitals, eat breakfast, then go outside. All the way until lunch, which was around 11 or 12, they ate breakfast at like 8, maybe 8:30 AM, depending on when they got their vitals done and breakfast served. She normally wouldn't complain because she loves being outside, but it was cold, and the techs made them stay out even though the majority of the kids wanted to go in. So they would eat lunch, go back to the unit for a bit, and then right back outside. Up until they had to go in for group or dinner. After dinner, though, is when they mainly stayed in but sometimes went outside even more. Overall, though she did NOT like her stay, the best part was her little friend group and the techs that I mentioned earlier. Other than that, she said she didn't like the place, and she does not want to go back even if it's the last resort.

Not sure how this place is still in business. Staff did not work well together. Toxic environment for both employees and patients. Some of the staff were very rude and immature towards patients and their requests. Would… not recommend this facility to anyone. Their answer for everything is more medication. Prolonged stays for most patients against their will. Not a healthy environment for anyone. Food was terrible and inconsistent (lowest bidder obviously)

Ocean gets no stars because of out patient. They don't fight to keep people in services and Valerie head transportation does not know what the HIPAA law is and don't train her drivers very well. The other ladies in… office got their education from a fruit loop box. I would not Recommend Oceans out patient for nobody. If you need help find another place and they like to call police that's a coward way. Mental illness is real and they don't help you . They did not fight for my son.

Sadly the eye on America and good morning America were exactly on what I knew was happening at this facility No longer is patient care of importance it is revenue. 70 percent of all nursing home facilities or elderly… hospitals are owned by equity groups and real estate groups. Selling is more important than providing. Watch good morning America in the morning. I knew when I came across the fact that you are owned by Partners Equity Group out of Maine as is Five Star, Amarillo Skilled Nursing, Georgia Manor, and other local facilities as well as the two others I was guided to in Wellington and Borger. As soon as you knew I was right. You made sure the documentation you sent to others outside of the Equity Group reflected misinformation. describing my mother. Gina is being reported to the board of social workers. And this will all be exposed. No wonder the previous social worker resigned. She had way too much integrity to be trapped into utilizing her position to be a used car salesman. My journey has just begun in exposing the truth of what happened to my mother. The person's review before mine is spot on. Falsifying documents will be revealed. By the way did you ever think my mom could be having a reaction to the medicine you prescribed. Yes she is but you pigeon hole patients and do not allow educated skilled professionals to search for the truth. There are three nurses that are worthy to listen to but you don't. They knew the truth too.
