Does Wellpoint Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes. Coverage includes assessment, medically supervised withdrawal, residential treatment, intensive outpatient, outpatient counseling, medication for opioid use disorder, case management and peer support, generally with little or no cost sharing.

Wellpoint is the rebranded Amerigroup, part of Elevance Health, and it operates Medicaid managed care and Medicare plans under contract to state governments. Older correspondence and directories still carry the Amerigroup name, which causes some confusion.

Expansion and Eligibility

This is worth raising early because it determines whether coverage is available at all. Tennessee, Texas and Georgia have not expanded Medicaid in the ordinary way, which means adults without dependent children generally do not qualify at any income unless pregnant, aged, blind or disabled. Georgia operates a limited expansion requiring qualifying activity. Maryland and other states in Wellpoint’s footprint have expanded.

If you are in a non-expansion state and do not qualify, the state behavioral health authority funds treatment on a sliding scale for uninsured residents, and federal block grant money supports care with priority for pregnant women and people who inject drugs. Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient

Both covered and usually quicker to access. Where a residential bed involves a wait, starting outpatient immediately is the better decision.

Medication for Opioid Use Disorder

Buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone are covered. Methadone requires a licensed opioid treatment program, and those are unevenly distributed, so office-based buprenorphine and telehealth are frequently the practical route outside the metros.

Work Requirements from 2027

Federal work requirements reach Medicaid expansion populations from January 2027, which affects Wellpoint members in expansion states. People participating in substance use disorder treatment are exempt, though the exemption must be identified rather than assumed.

Keep evidence of treatment enrollment, open state correspondence promptly, and appeal rather than accept a termination that arrives while you are in treatment.

Ask whether the facility is contracted with Wellpoint in your specific state, since a program working with the plan in one state may have no relationship with it in another.

Continuing outpatient care, medication management and peer support are covered. Recovery housing is not a medical benefit, though several states fund recovery residences separately and operate certification schemes worth checking before moving in.

Coverage for Specific Substances

Across Wellpoint’s southern states, methamphetamine is heavily represented in the rural counties and has no approved medication, so treatment rests on behavioral programs that are thinnest where the need is greatest.

Fentanyl now dominates the opioid supply everywhere, and medication treatment is covered and effective. Alcohol remains the most common substance overall and carries the clearest withdrawal risk, which matters most where detox capacity is limited.

If You Move States

Medicaid does not travel. Moving to another state means applying there, and coverage does not carry over even where the same plan brand operates. Anyone mid-treatment who is planning to move should raise it with the plan before going, because a gap in coverage during treatment is worse than a delayed move.
