Eating Disorder Treatment in Montana

Eating disorder treatment in Montana covers care for anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and related conditions, including when an eating disorder occurs alongside alcohol or drug use. RehabSeekers.com is a substance use and mental health directory, so this page gives particular attention to that overlap, which most eating disorder pages leave out.

Montana has few specialist eating disorder programs, especially at the residential and hospital levels. Many families combine local outpatient care with telehealth or a stay in another state. The sections below explain the levels of care, when medical care comes first, and how Medicaid and private insurance fit.

Common questions about Eating Disorder Treatment

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are eating disorder programs in Montana?

Eating disorder treatment listings in Montana cluster around Billings, Great Falls, Orchard Homes, Helena and Kalispell, in that order. Those places hold the strongest concentration of listings statewide, which narrows a first search.

Bozeman joins Billings and Great Falls among the larger cities in the state. Anyone living farther from these hubs can ask a program whether video sessions are available and how often in-person visits are required during care.

Rehab Centers in Billingshttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/montana/billings/
Do eating disorder programs in Montana take Montana Medicaid?

Eating disorder programs in Montana that accept Montana Medicaid bill on a fee-for-service basis, since the state uses no managed care companies. Members largely sit within Passport to Health, a primary care case management program.

Acceptance differs from provider to provider, so confirming with the admissions team before a first assessment avoids surprises. Having the Montana Medicaid ID number on hand speeds up that call and any questions about which services are covered.

Are there eating disorder programs near a river in Montana?

Most of the eating disorder programs in Montana sit within 25 miles of a river, and the median distance from listed facilities to the nearest one is about 6.3 miles. The Clarks Fork Yellowstone River, Bitterroot River and Sun River come up first, with each distance taken from the listed address.

What levels of eating disorder care are available in Montana?

Eating disorder care in Montana runs from weekly outpatient sessions through intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization and residential programs to round-the-clock hospital treatment. Dedicated programs at the partial hospitalization and residential levels are hard to find in the state, so higher levels of care often mean travel.

Outpatient care means therapy sessions, nutrition counseling and medical check-ins while you live at home. An intensive outpatient program adds several sessions a week, often with supported meals, and partial hospitalization fills most of each weekday. Residential care provides live-in treatment with supervised meals and staff present at all hours, while inpatient hospital care is for people who are medically unstable.

A medical evaluation should come before choosing a program. An emergency physician or primary care doctor can check heart rhythm, electrolytes and hydration, then decide whether staying in outpatient care is safe. Restoring regular eating after severe restriction can shift electrolytes dangerously, so it often begins under medical supervision, and remote care alone is not enough for someone who is unstable.

Montana Medicaid and private insurance can both help pay. If the right program is out of state, check coverage with both that program and Montana Healthcare Programs first. Many Montana addiction treatment listings do not treat eating disorders at all, so ask the admissions team directly. Call 911 for fainting, chest pain or seizures, and call or text 988 in an emotional crisis.

Level of careWhat it usually involves
OutpatientScheduled therapy, nutrition counseling and medical follow-up while living at home
Intensive outpatient (IOP)Several sessions a week, a few hours each, often with supported meals
Partial hospitalization (PHP)Treatment for most of the day on most weekdays, returning home at night
ResidentialLive-in care with daily therapy, supervised meals and staff on site at all hours
InpatientHospital care for medical instability, with nursing and physician oversight

Montana’s substance use listings are grouped by the same levels: outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential and inpatient. Many of those programs do not treat eating disorders. Ask the admissions team about eating disorder care before planning around a listing.

Of all treatment listings in Montana, 53 percent are in rural areas and 47 percent are in towns. The median listing is 5.4 miles from an airport. Billings Logan International is the nearest airport for more listings than any other, followed by Missoula Montana Airport and Great Falls International. Seventy-seven percent of listings sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River.

When does someone with an eating disorder need a hospital or residential program?

Someone with an eating disorder needs hospital care when their body is medically unstable. Residential care is the next step when symptoms keep worsening despite outpatient or day treatment. A medical evaluation should come before any program decision. A primary care doctor or emergency physician can check heart rhythm, blood electrolytes and hydration, and judge whether outpatient care is safe.

Refeeding means restoring regular eating after severe restriction. The process can shift electrolytes in dangerous ways, so it is often started under medical supervision. Remote care is not enough for someone who is medically unstable, needs supervised meals, or is at risk of self-harm. Montana’s telehealth listings work best as part of a plan that includes in-person medical follow-up.

Signs that need emergency care

Call 911 or go to a hospital emergency department for fainting, chest pain, a racing or very slow heartbeat, confusion, seizures, or vomiting blood. For thoughts of suicide or an emotional crisis, call or text 988 at any hour.

Does Montana Medicaid or private insurance pay for eating disorder treatment?

Montana Medicaid and private insurance can both help pay for eating disorder treatment. The Department of Public Health and Human Services runs Medicaid as Montana Healthcare Programs, and the program expanded to more adults on January 1, 2016. Montana does not use managed care companies. Most members are in Passport to Health, where a primary care provider coordinates referrals.

Montana Medicaid covers telehealth by live video and by telephone when it is medically necessary and clinically appropriate. Before arranging a program in another state, ask Montana Healthcare Programs and the receiving program whether the stay will be covered. More on payment is on the Medicaid page. Medicare, TRICARE and self-pay are other routes worth asking about.

Federal mental health parity law applies to most private plans and Medicaid expansion coverage. If a plan covers mental health care, its limits on eating disorder treatment generally cannot be stricter than its limits on comparable medical care.

Can eating disorders and substance use be treated at the same program?

Some programs treat an eating disorder and substance use together, but many treat only one. The two often overlap, through alcohol use, stimulant use to suppress appetite, or misuse of laxatives and diuretics. Withdrawal on top of malnutrition needs close medical care.

Montana programs that treat more than one condition at once are listed under dual diagnosis care. Depression, anxiety and trauma frequently come up alongside eating disorders, and related options are on the depression and trauma page.

How can families in Montana find and check an eating disorder program?

Families in Montana can start with a medical evaluation. Ask whether a program works with adolescents or adults, offers gender-specific or LGBTQ+ affirming groups, and provides care in Spanish. Options for young people with substance use concerns are on the teen listings.

Looking up licenses and accreditation

Montana facility licenses come from the Health Care Facility Licensure section of the Department of Public Health and Human Services. The Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Division separately approves substance use treatment programs. For accreditation, ask whether a program holds Joint Commission or CARF accreditation, then look it up on the accreditor’s own site.

National groups offer family support. ANAD runs a free eating disorder helpline. NEDA closed its phone helpline in 2023 and now points people to other resources. F.E.A.S.T. supports parents and caregivers. RehabSeekers.com listings draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and details supplied by the providers themselves. Every type of care in the state is on the Montana treatment page.
