DUI and DWI Programs in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s DUI law, Act 24 of 2003, sends first and second time offenders to Alcohol Highway Safety School, and a judge can add drug and alcohol treatment at any blood alcohol tier. The school is a classroom course about alcohol, driving and the law. Treatment is clinical care for a substance use disorder. The two often run side by side.

Programs listed for DUI referrals in Pennsylvania lean toward smaller communities: half sit in towns and 29 percent in rural areas. Listings draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details supplied by the providers themselves, so call ahead about court reporting and openings.

Common questions about DUI and DWI Programs

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are DUI programs in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania listings for DUI and DWI programs cluster in York, Johnstown, Norristown, Doylestown and Somerset. Anyone ordered into a program can start by checking providers near home or work, since regular attendance is easier close by.

Larger cities nearby include Philadelphia, Johnstown and Trenton. A court or probation officer may need proof of enrollment, so confirming that a provider can send attendance records is worth doing before the first session.

Rehab Centers in Yorkhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/pennsylvania/york/
Does Pennsylvania Medical Assistance cover DUI treatment in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania Medical Assistance is recorded as accepted by most of the DUI and DWI programs in Pennsylvania. Behavioral health coverage runs through Behavioral HealthChoices, where each county contracts a plan such as Community Behavioral Health in Philadelphia, Community Care Behavioral Health Organization or Magellan Behavioral Health of Pennsylvania. The member's county sets the plan.

Rehab Centers in Pennsylvania That Accept Pennsylvania Medical Assistancehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/pennsylvania/pennsylvania-medical-assistance/
Are there DUI programs near a river in Pennsylvania?

Nearly all of the DUI and DWI programs in Pennsylvania sit within 25 miles of a river, a median of about 14.1 miles to the nearest one. The most-named rivers are Cooper River, West Branch Conestoga River and Schuylkill River.

Each distance is measured from a facility. For programs attended in person, travel time matters more than the river, so checking the route from home or work makes sense.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

What DUI program does Pennsylvania require, and who oversees it?

Pennsylvania requires Alcohol Highway Safety School for people convicted of a first or second DUI, under Act 24 of 2003 as described by PennDOT, while clinical treatment is overseen separately by the state’s Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. The school teaches how alcohol and other drugs affect driving and what the law requires.

The school does not diagnose or treat anything. Treatment is a separate requirement that a judge can order at every blood alcohol tier the law sets, and a drug and alcohol evaluation usually decides whether care is needed and at what level, from weekly outpatient counseling to a residential stay.

Clinical drug and alcohol treatment programs in Pennsylvania hold licenses from that department, and county Single County Authorities coordinate publicly funded care. Some counties also run DUI courts, part of the problem-solving courts the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania recognized in 2006, with a statewide coordinator within the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts.
