Sober Living Homes in Washington

Sober living homes in Washington offer shared, alcohol- and drug-free housing for people who want a steady place to live while they build recovery. A home of this kind is not a treatment program, so many residents pair it with outpatient care, counseling or medication from a separate provider.

Washington keeps a state registry of recovery residences certified by an approved certifying organization, and joining is voluntary for most homes. The listings below draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details supplied by the providers themselves. Filters let you sort by gender, medication policy, populations served and location.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Washington cities have sober living homes?

Washington sober living listings cluster in Riverton, Poulsbo, Tracyton, East Port Orchard and Navy Yard City, in that order. Each of these communities shows recovery housing on the directory, though house rules, rent and openings differ from one home to the next, so calling ahead is worthwhile.

Bremerton, Spokane and Tacoma are larger cities nearby where people often begin a search for recovery housing, especially when they want a home close to work, family or an outpatient program.

Rehab Centers in Poulsbohttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/washington/poulsbo/
Does Apple Health cover sober living in Washington?

Most of the sober living homes in Washington record accepting Apple Health, though asking a home directly is still wise. Coverage depends on the plan a person is enrolled in, such as Molina Healthcare of Washington or Coordinated Care of Washington. Rent for housing and treatment services are often billed separately.

Rehab Centers in Washington That Accept Apple Healthhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/washington/apple-health/
Which sober living homes in Washington are close to a river?

Within 25 miles of nearly all of the sober living homes in Washington flows a river, with the nearest a median of about 9 miles from listed facilities. The most-named rivers are the East Fork Union River, the West Branch Little Spokane River and the Black River.

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home, also called a recovery residence, is shared housing where residents agree to stay free of alcohol and drugs, with no clinical treatment on site. Residential rehab is different: a licensed program delivers counseling and medical care, and in Washington the Department of Health licenses those behavioral health agencies.

A correctional halfway house differs again, because a court or corrections agency places people there. A sober home is a housing arrangement, not a substitute for care. Many residents keep attending outpatient treatment or an intensive outpatient program, and anyone who needs round-the-clock clinical care may look first at residential rehab in Washington.

Washington uses voluntary certification rather than a mandatory license for these homes. The Health Care Authority keeps a registry of residences certified by an authorized certifying organization, so asking which body certified a home, and when, is a reasonable first step. Support levels range from peer-run houses to homes linked with a licensed program.

Residents usually pay rent themselves, and prices differ by home, support level and area, so compare written fee sheets. Before signing, ask about drug testing, curfew, refunds and what happens after a return to use.

Are sober living homes in Washington certified or regulated?

Washington uses voluntary certification for recovery residences rather than a mandatory license. Under RCW 41.05.760, passed in 2019, the Washington State Health Care Authority keeps a registry of recovery residences certified by an approved Washington-based, nationally recognized certifying organization. Most homes can choose whether to take part, though a residence that joins the state program needs that certification.

Certification shows a home met a certifying organization’s standards; a home that isn’t listed sits outside that system. To check, ask which organization certified the home and when, then look for it on the Health Care Authority’s registry or ask the Washington Recovery Help Line at 1-866-789-1511 for help finding the current list.

What the support levels mean

Many certifying organizations use four support levels from the National Alliance for Recovery Residences. The levels describe staffing and structure, not quality.

LevelWhat to expect
Level I, peer-runResidents run the house together, with no paid staff on site.
Level II, monitoredA house manager or senior resident oversees rules and drug testing.
Level III, supervisedPaid staff, set schedules and life skills support; clinical care stays outside the home.
Level IV, service providerHousing linked to a licensed program, often with clinical staff in the same setting.

How much does sober living cost in Washington, and who pays?

Residents of Washington sober homes usually pay rent themselves, and prices vary by home, support level and area. No published state figure for sober living rent was found, so compare written fee sheets rather than a quoted average. Ask what rent covers, such as utilities, drug tests or meals, and whether the deposit is refundable.

Washington Apple Health, the state’s Medicaid program, covers substance use treatment through managed care plans, but don’t assume any plan pays for housing; ask the plan and the home in writing. Some residents get help through a county program, a court or corrections program or state-funded services. State opioid response and settlement funds pay for wider opioid work, and the help line can say what is open now. For treatment coverage, see programs that accept Medicaid.

What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Ask for the house rules and resident agreement in writing before you sign. Find out how often drug and alcohol tests happen and who pays for them, the curfew and guest rules, and any minimum or maximum stay. Then ask how refunds work, how much notice comes before a discharge, and what happens to your belongings.

Ask plainly what happens after a return to use. Some homes discharge residents the same day; a safer policy connects the person with treatment or a safe place to stay, because tolerance falls after time without opioids and overdose risk rises.

Can you live in a sober home while taking medication for opioid use disorder?

Policies on buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone differ from home to home, so ask before you move in. A home that accepts medication should explain how doses are stored. Prescribers are listed under Suboxone clinics in Washington and methadone clinics in Washington.

Your rights and safety

People in recovery are generally protected by the federal Fair Housing Act, which bars housing discrimination based on disability, though current illegal drug use is not covered. To report discrimination, a fair housing complaint can be filed with the federal housing department or a fair housing organization in Washington.

Ask whether naloxone is kept where everyone in the house can reach it. The Department of Health’s statewide standing order lets pharmacies dispense naloxone without a prescription, Medicaid covers it, and the department points to a Naloxone Finder and StopOverdose.org. Washington’s Good Samaritan law, RCW 69.50.315, protects a person who seeks help for an overdose, and the person overdosing, from drug possession charges.

How do you find a sober home through these listings?

Washington’s sober living listings sit mostly around Puget Sound and Spokane, with Bremerton, Spokane and Tacoma the nearest big cities. Three in four lie within 25 miles of the coast, and all fall within 25 miles of a river, most often the East Fork Union River. King County International Airport – Boeing Field is the nearest airport for half, a median of 15.8 miles away.

Filter by gender, medication policy, populations served, location and languages, then call a few homes with your questions. The Washington Recovery Help Line, run by Crisis Connections with oversight from the Health Care Authority, can point you to housing and treatment. You can also browse all treatment listings in Washington or the national guide to sober living homes.
