Treatment Centers in Washington That Accept Aetna

Aetna covers drug and alcohol rehab in Washington mainly through employer plans and the federal employee plans it administers, since it runs no Apple Health plan and sold no marketplace plans for 2026. Inpatient, residential and partial hospitalization care need precertification, while intensive outpatient treatment and outpatient detox are off Aetna’s current precertification list.

Facility entries trace back to government treatment registers or Washington State Department of Health licensing files, with any Joint Commission or CARF accreditation marked. Treatment in Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane and Vancouver is listed with smaller towns in the Cascades and along Puget Sound, and a level-of-care filter separates detox, residential and outpatient programs.

Does Aetna Cover Rehab in Washington?

Yes, on most Aetna plans, though each plan sets the details. Aetna is not among the Washington State Health Care Authority’s five Apple Health plans, and Aetna left the ACA exchanges in every state where it sold them from January 2026. Washington residents reach Aetna rehab coverage through employer plans and the federal plans Aetna administers.

Aetna in Washington means Aetna Life Insurance Company and its affiliates, with behavioral health managed in-house rather than by an outside vendor. Its Choice POS II network serves Washington members of the Mail Handlers Benefit Plan and the Rural Carrier Benefit Plan, and Aetna also owns the First Health PPO network that some employer plans rent.

Which Aetna plans do Washington residents use?

Employer and federal plans. Nationally, most Aetna commercial members sit in self-funded employer plans whose benefits the employer sets, a City of Seattle case study involves an Aetna member, and PacificSource’s 2026 Idaho individual plans use the Aetna Signature Administrators network for every Washington county except Clark and Cowlitz.

Does Aetna Cover Inpatient Rehab in Washington?

Yes, when the plan includes residential care and Aetna clears the stay in advance. Aetna’s August 1, 2024 behavioral health list files hospital, addiction facility and residential center stays together as inpatient confinements. For inpatient rehab programs, the nationwide Mail Handlers and Rural Carrier plans require a residential center to be accredited and state-licensed.

How long will Aetna pay for residential rehab?

Aetna pays for residential rehab as long as its reviewers find the stay medically necessary, using the ASAM Criteria, third edition, for addiction care. The Mail Handlers plan pays no inpatient benefits for a stay found unnecessary, and needs no precertification for stays under 24 hours or when Medicare Part A pays first.

Does Aetna need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

Yes, on most Aetna plans. Aetna’s national behavioral health list requires precertification for inpatient and residential stays, and the Mail Handlers and Rural Carrier plans cut benefits when nobody precertifies a stay. Out of network, arranging it falls to the member rather than the program.

Does Aetna Cover Detox in Washington?

Yes. Outpatient detox with medication is a covered service in one New York employer’s 2026 Choice POS II plan document; a 2020 version of Aetna’s list says it has needed no precertification since January 1, 2019, and the current list omits it. Inpatient detox counts as an inpatient confinement, so medical detox that takes insurance is precertified before admission.

Does Aetna Cover Outpatient Rehab in Washington?

Yes. That same Choice POS II document covers outpatient counseling, intensive outpatient programs with insurance and partial hospitalization, plus supervised peer counseling. No precertification for intensive outpatient care appears on Aetna’s current list, which does name partial hospitalization covered by insurance, and the Mail Handlers plan also asks for prior approval of partial hospitalization.

For virtual visits Aetna names CVS Virtual Care and Teladoc Health. Mail Handlers plans offer Teladoc mental health visits at no added cost, though Consumer Option members meet the deductible first, Teladoc is not available in every state and it does not prescribe controlled medications. Aetna’s employee assistance program is Resources For Living.

Does Aetna Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes, through each plan’s own drug list, which CVS Caremark, Aetna’s sister company in CVS Health, manages. Members look up a medicine by plan name and year with Aetna’s drug search, which sets the tier for Suboxone and buprenorphine with insurance, and the Rural Carrier Benefit Plan’s Aetna Medicare Advantage plan lists opioid treatment program services at no charge.

Does Aetna cover methadone?

That depends on the plan. Medicare covers methadone clinic treatment, buprenorphine and naltrexone through enrolled opioid treatment programs, and the Rural Carrier plan’s Aetna Medicare Advantage plan lists opioid treatment program services at no charge. For employer plans, methadone terms sit in each plan’s own benefit documents.

Does Aetna cover Suboxone?

Often, by the plan’s drug list. In 2017 Aetna announced that Suboxone and similar buprenorphine products would no longer need prior authorization on its commercial plans, following Cigna and Anthem. Each plan’s drug list still fixes the tier and quantity, and a Washington member using Teladoc through a federal plan needs another prescriber, since Teladoc does not prescribe controlled medications.

Aetna Rehab Centers on Puget Sound, Near Ski Areas and Along the Columbia

Aetna’s rules for the federal plans it administers are the same in every state, so they do not change across Washington’s landscapes. What changes is the regional crisis line, which serves anyone with or without insurance, and, for PacificSource members, whether their plan uses the Aetna Signature Administrators network or PacificSource’s own.

Aetna rehab near Puget Sound bays

Puget Sound treatment for Aetna members spans Elliott Bay in Seattle, Commencement Bay in Tacoma and Bellingham Bay in Whatcom County. All three sit outside Clark and Cowlitz, so PacificSource members there use the Aetna Signature Administrators network. Whatcom County, home to recovery programs in Bellingham and other rehabs near bays, uses the North Sound crisis line, 1-800-584-3578.

Aetna rehab near Washington ski areas

Ski country spreads across four counties. Snoqualmie Pass straddles King and Kittitas, Crystal Mountain sits in Pierce, and Mount Spokane rises above Spokane. None is in Clark or Cowlitz, so PacificSource Idaho plan members use the Aetna Signature Administrators network near all three, including rehabs near ski resorts and treatment near Issaquah on the I-90 route.

Aetna rehab along the Columbia River

Columbia River towns are where Aetna’s role changes for PacificSource members. In Clark and Cowlitz counties, around Vancouver, Longview and Kelso, those plans use PacificSource’s own network rather than Aetna Signature Administrators. Rehabs near rivers such as Longview treatment programs fall under the Southwest or Great Rivers crisis lines.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Aetna in Washington?

Browse the listings on this page. Each program listed takes Aetna; narrow them to one town, one level of care or one substance with the filters. A listing’s phone number reaches the program itself, and rehabs accepting private insurance are gathered on a national page for anyone whose card names another carrier.

Precertification is the step that matters with Aetna: before a residential, inpatient or partial hospitalization admission, the facility or the member calls the number on the Aetna card. Federal and postal members call their own plan lines, below, which also handle precertification and behavioral health support. Other commercial members use the number on their ID card.

Seattle is the setting of a City of Seattle benefits case study in which an Aetna member was told couples counseling fell outside behavioral health benefits and was referred to the Resources For Living program. King County, home to treatment centers in Seattle and Capitol Hill rehab programs, uses crisis line 1-866-427-4747.

Aetna rehab in Tacoma and Pierce County

Pierce County federal and postal workers on Mail Handlers or Rural Carrier coverage use the plans’ Choice POS II network. Mail Handlers retirees with Medicare can choose its Aetna Medicare Advantage plan, a nationwide PPO. Carelon runs crisis services at 1-800-576-7764 for the county around rehab programs in Tacoma and downtown Tacoma treatment.

Aetna rehab in Spokane

Spokane falls inside the area where PacificSource’s 2026 Idaho individual plans use the Aetna Signature Administrators network, so an Idaho plan member living or working in Spokane uses Aetna-network providers there. Crisis calls in Spokane County go to 1-877-266-1818, and Spokane treatment options include programs in North Spokane.

Aetna rehab in Vancouver and Clark County

Clark County is the exception for PacificSource plan members, whose plans use PacificSource’s own network there and in Cowlitz County rather than Aetna’s. Mail Handlers and Rural Carrier members in Clark County still use Aetna’s Choice POS II network, and the Southwest crisis line, run by Carelon, is 1-800-626-8137 in the county that holds Vancouver rehab centers.

Can I use Aetna for rehab in a different state?

Yes, on Choice POS II plans. Choice POS II, used by both federal plans, needs no referral and pays in-network and out-of-network care nationwide. An Aetna HMO or EPO, by contrast, pays outside its network for emergencies alone, and the Mail Handlers plan can pay a provider outside the network at network rates when it backs the treatment plan.

How much does rehab cost with Aetna?

Each Aetna plan sets its own deductible and cost share. The Rural Carrier Benefit Plan charges 15 percent of the allowance for outpatient substance use care in network and 30 percent outside it, while its Aetna Medicare Advantage plan lists outpatient substance use, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization at no charge. Out-of-network providers can bill above Aetna’s allowed amount.

Aetna is not the only route to paying for treatment in Washington. People who qualify can switch to Apple Health through the state’s Medicaid program, Medicare rehab coverage applies from age 65, and sliding scale treatment is another option when an Aetna plan leaves a large share of the bill.
