Long Term Rehab Centers in Washington

Long-term rehab in Washington usually means a structured treatment stay that runs past the standard 30 days, often for several months. Listings on this page come from across the state, from the Puget Sound corridor to Spokane and Yakima. Each one can show the program’s stated length of stay, levels of care, payment types, insurers, accreditation, the genders and ages it serves, and languages spoken.

Listing details are drawn from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and information the providers send in themselves. Stay lengths, fees and openings change often, so ask the admissions team for current details before planning a move.

Common questions about Long Term Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Washington cities have long-term rehabs?

Long-term rehabs in Washington cluster in Kirkland, Boulevard Park, Yakima, Bellingham and Dishman. Kirkland appears first, with Boulevard Park close behind, while Yakima, Bellingham and Dishman round out the places where programs for months-long stays list an address.

Larger cities nearby include Seattle, Spokane and Yakima. Anyone searching from one of those can widen the search to surrounding communities, where residential programs for longer stays also appear.

Rehab Centers in Kirklandhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/washington/kirkland/
Do long-term rehabs in Washington take Apple Health?

Most of the long-term rehabs in Washington accept Apple Health. Benefits come through the managed care plan a member is enrolled in, including Molina Healthcare of Washington, Wellpoint Washington and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Washington, which cover physical and behavioral health together, substance use disorder treatment included.

Rehab Centers in Washington That Accept Apple Healthhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/washington/apple-health/
Are there long-term rehabs near a river in Washington?

Rivers are close to long-term rehabs: nearly all of the long-term rehabs in Washington sit within 25 miles of one, with a median of about 6 miles to the nearest, measured from listed facilities.

The most-named rivers near these programs are the Sammamish River, the West Branch Little Spokane River and the Duwamish River. Anyone weighing a months-long stay can ask admissions staff which river runs closest to a given program.

How long is long-term treatment for substance use in Washington?

Long-term treatment in Washington is care designed to last longer than about 30 days, and programs here often list stays of 60 days, 90 days or more. Providers do not share one definition. In practice, the length of a stay is usually set by clinical assessment and progress rather than a fixed calendar.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse describes long-term residential treatment as round-the-clock care, usually outside a hospital, and notes that therapeutic communities plan stays of 6 to 12 months. Recovery housing is different: a place to live without alcohol or drugs, with no clinical treatment on site, and not a substitute for licensed care.

Long-term listings in Washington cluster near water and transport. Nearly all sit within 25 miles of a river, at a median of 6 miles, and the Sammamish River is the closest river for more of them than any other. Lake Washington is the lake nearest to the most programs.

Each listed program is within 30 miles of an airport, with a median of 9 miles to the nearest one. King County International Airport (Boeing Field) is the closest airport for the largest group. In the east, Mount Spokane is the named summit nearest to the most programs, and Apple Health plans tend to approve longer stays in stages.

TypeWhat it isWashington oversight
Long-term residentialClinical care with staff on site day and night, beyond 30 daysDepartment of Health license
Extended or step-down careLower-intensity clinical care after residential, such as day treatment or intensive outpatientDepartment of Health license
Therapeutic communityStructured residential model built around group living, with planned stays of monthsLicensed when it delivers treatment
Recovery housingAlcohol- and drug-free housing with no clinical treatment on siteOptional state registry, not a treatment license

How is long-term treatment different from recovery housing in Washington?

Long-term treatment is licensed clinical care, while recovery housing is a place to live without alcohol or drugs that does not provide treatment. In Washington, the Department of Health’s Health Systems Quality Assurance office licenses behavioral health agencies under chapter 246-341 WAC, and an agency treating substance use needs a certification for that service. You can ask any program for its behavioral health agency license number and look it up with the Department of Health.

Recovery residences in Washington can join a registry kept by the Health Care Authority. Residences on that registry are certified by an approved Washington-based, nationally recognized organization under RCW 41.05.760. Joining is optional, so a home that is not on the registry may still operate. Some faith-based programs offer stays of many months without a treatment license. Those programs can offer structure and community, but they are not clinical care. Washington sober living listings are kept separate from treatment for that reason.

Will Washington Apple Health or private insurance pay for a long-term program?

Apple Health and private insurers can cover a longer stay when it is medically necessary, but they usually approve days in stages rather than all at once. Apple Health is Washington’s Medicaid program, run by the Health Care Authority. Its integrated managed care plans cover physical and behavioral health, including substance use treatment. The plans are Community Health Plan of Washington, Coordinated Care of Washington, Molina Healthcare of Washington, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Washington and Wellpoint Washington. More on Medicaid is on our Medicaid coverage page.

Washington insurance questions are best asked before admission. Ask the plan and the admissions team the same things:

  • Is prior authorization needed?
  • How often are continued days reapproved?
  • Is the program in network?
  • What happens if approval stops partway through the stay?

What are the options if I cannot afford a long-term program?

Uninsured Washington residents can ask about publicly funded beds, sliding-scale fees and free programs. The Health Care Authority’s Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery administers the federal block grant that helps pay for treatment, and federal grant rules give pregnant women admission preference. The Washington Recovery Help Line, 1-866-789-1511, run by Crisis Connections, can point callers toward openings. Browse state-funded programs or sliding-scale programs in Washington. Costs rise with medical staffing, the length of the stay, room type, and whether the program is in your insurer’s network.

What should you plan for during and after a months-long stay?

Medication during a long stay

Programs that continue medication for opioid or alcohol use disorder usually say so in their listing. Washington law, RCW 71.24.595, directs the Health Care Authority to work with health plans to remove barriers to methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone. Before admission, ask whether a current prescription can continue and how doses from an outside clinic are coordinated. Washington methadone clinics and Suboxone clinics are listed separately. Anyone at risk of severe withdrawal from alcohol or sedatives may need medical detox first. In an emergency, call 911.

Work, family and step-down care

Talk with an employer’s human resources office about medical leave before a stay of several months. Ask the program for its written rules on phone use, visits and mail, since some programs limit contact in the first weeks.

Step-down planning in Washington often begins weeks before discharge. It may move a person into intensive outpatient care or recovery housing, and adds a plan for a return to use if it happens. For comparison, see residential rehab and 30-day rehab, or browse all Washington listings.
