How long is residential rehab?

Length is set by assessment, not by the payment route. NIDA describes the original short-term residential model as a three to six week inpatient phase followed by extended outpatient therapy and a self-help group, and therapeutic communities as long-term residential with planned stays of six to twelve months.

Sliding scale residential rehab is a live-in treatment stay charged at a rate worked out from your income rather than billed at the program’s full nightly figure. The thing that separates this from every other income-priced page is that no federal rule requires it. Outpatient clinics funded through the federal health center program must publish a discount table; research for this page found no equivalent requirement reaching residential settings. So a reduced price here comes from one of four separate machineries: a state scale written into a provider’s contract, a publicly funded bed, a nonprofit hospital’s financial assistance policy, or a scholarship the program awards itself.

Which Levels of Residential Care Does This Cover?

Three tiers carry residential numbering. The placement criteria name 3.1 as clinically managed low-intensity residential, 3.5 as clinically managed high-intensity residential, and 3.7 as medically monitored. A peer-reviewed study treats 3.5 and above as high-intensity care. Where someone does not meet 3.1, the fourth-edition assessment guide routes them to clinically managed outpatient care instead.

The Lowest Residential Tier

Level 3.1 is described in the federal placement guide as a twenty-four-hour setting such as a group home, carrying at least five hours of low-intensity treatment a week. That is the tier where a stay most resembles supported housing with treatment attached, and it is the one most likely to be paid for by a county or state contract rather than by an insurer.

The Medically Monitored Tier

Level 3.7 is described as twenty-four-hour nursing care with a physician available and counselor availability sixteen hours a day. Medically managed care goes further still, involving daily medical attention alongside the nursing. Hours for the 3.5 tier were not found in the sources consulted, and the Texas figures of at least six and at least thirty treatment hours a week are not mapped to these numbered tiers.
