Rutgers UBHC Newark – Newark Reviews and Ratings
Whether you are here to read reviews of Rutgers UBHC Newark or to write one, this section is the place. Patients, family members and professionals who know the Newark program are welcome to contribute.
I had a very negative experience with Rutgers University Behavioral Healthcare in Newark, particularly the Partial Care Program. I came to Partial Care hoping for an environment where I could receive mental health… support without feeling judged for who I am. Instead, I often felt pressured to conform to what staff considered "normal" rather than being understood as an individual. I was criticized for bringing a stuffed animal as a comfort object and for looking and dressing young. Staff made comments about my appearance and clothing that made me feel self-conscious about expressing myself. I understand that I may look younger than my age and that my personal style isn't everyone's taste, but I did not expect these things to become a source of criticism in a mental health treatment setting. I also had a very difficult experience with a clinician when I decided to leave the program. I felt pressured to stay, and when I continued expressing my concerns, my diagnoses were brought up in a way that I experienced as dismissive and invalidating. I felt that my actual concerns were not being addressed. At the time, I was also unemployed and struggling both mentally and financially. I had asked this clinician for help connecting me with disability-related resources, and she agreed to help and had me sign a release of information. After I left the program, I contacted her to ask how I could follow up with the organization she had contacted. I was told that I had "denied their services," and I was not given the information I needed to follow up independently. This was especially upsetting given the circumstances I was in at the time. The program was also much more group-focused than I had expected. Group therapy was difficult for me, and I ultimately realized that this treatment setting was not a good fit for my needs. I needed more individualized support and ultimately decided to seek treatment elsewhere. I don't expect mental health professionals to agree with every decision a patient makes, and I recognize that I lost my temper during one phone conversation when I was extremely distressed. However, I believe patients should still be able to raise concerns about their treatment without feeling that their mental health diagnoses are being used to dismiss them. I ultimately left UBHC feeling worse rather than better. I hope Rutgers UBHC takes feedback from former patients seriously and works toward creating an environment where patients feel respected, understood, and supported.
The patients are treating with respect and their families are counting in the process, as a part of healing process, thanks. The communication has been fluid and honest. Thanks for help my son with CIP (Cannabis Induced… Psycosis). THANKS 🙏
I give 5 stars because Dr Taha is one of the best ,not only doctors I've ever met,but human being, she's so caring, where others rush to be finished with you,she actually listens, she honestly cares about her patients, she… takes the time to know you ,and not judge you by your looks, gender, race,or age😎thank you for coming into my life ,Dr Taha,at a time when I thought all was lost ,she helped me start a new venture, late in life I was scared I was too old,she should me otherwise now I'm thriving ,meg my goal now shooting for the stars, like they say in Hollywood GIVE THAT LADY A CONTRACT😎♥️🤍💙😎
This place Didn't work at all,the therapist woman that I talked to named Mrs hopper had a lack of understanding when I was talking to her two years ago, this place didn't help me at all,it made me felt worse,I wouldn't… recommend this place to anyone.
If I could give zero stars, I would. This place is garbage. They put me on the Suboxone shot and then when I show up to get my shot on a Friday, they had left five hours early for the day Without me knowing and I drove… two hours to get a shot that I was never even going to get! Meanwhile, I had to wait for the following Friday Because that’s the only time I can takeoff of work without being fired and the doctor wouldn’t send me a bridge script of Suboxone or something because I am very ill, at this point. This is an awful place. Don’t ever go here. nearly led me to relapse, today. Awful, awful, awful.
This place sucks. The staff is nice but that's it the whole system is a mess. Once I'm able to I'm going to find other providers. This is the 5th time I'm getting last minute appointment for meds and having to go days… without psychiatric medications. I'm very thankful I dont have meds that have bad side effects but this is ridiculous and dangerous. Edited. Whoever is working the front desk should be fired. I've called every day this week and still havent been able to make a psychiatrist appointment. They called me back and got "logged out" laughed and said they would call back and never did. I NEED my medications. There's no reason for this. No one go here it is unsafe and detrimental. Donors don't donate. I don't even care if the staff is nice this unacceptable
Therapist was toxic. Left the session wanting to un-alive myself even more.
I'm unsure who runs this place but they should be shut down. A referral for intake was sent to them for my daughter before she got discharged. It's been over a week and nothing. The social worker from the hospital… attempted to call them several times but no one ever picks up the phone. It is truly disheartening how difficult it is to obtain close mental health treatment for my daughter as I also live in Newark and this location would be closer to us. I now have to look elsewhere like Genpsych or High Focus.
Not meditative friendly their metaphysically abusive to their patients spent twenty minutes asking them under hypcratic oath to not tage me and they didn't listen
I've tried getting ahold of this place since last year for my child. "Call back tomorrow", "Someone will call you back", "Let me transfer you"--get a voicemail. I've left three separate messages different times of the… year and no one ever calls back, giving Rutgers a bag name. After reading these reviews, I've decided to go elsewhere. My son doesn't need any further trauma.
Nobody answers the phone. Horrible service. Therapist never shows up but they will still send you a bill.
I was here years ago and loved it . No complaints from my end, which is surprising considering usually how petty I am. Food was pretty okay, they always had events and all the therapy groups were awesome ran by awesome… people.
the experience while my child was there was unacceptable. the treatment was horrible, and the staff were unprofessional gossipers who were invasive and disrespected the children’s boundaries and triggers. my child… relapsed and ended up back in the hospital due to the treatment and negligence of actual mental health being of priority. i’d recommend a different program
I went to their behavior care center HORRIBLE the therapist are so unprofessional also the staff didn’t help and they just gossip about each other,I went there for depression I came out even worse,Please don’t send your… child here.
The people in this facility do not answer phone calls immediately. They let it go to voicemail. They do not effectively communicate with one another on a patients medical plan. Ex. You will have to explain to the… receptionist, doctor, supervisor one issue repetitively. They do not even allow pharmacists to call in (new policy as of march 2022) They want the mentally Ill patient to do the labor of health care services. You find that coordination of one’s medical plan will require you to constantly call or take time away from work to assist them 2024 I tried to re-utilize services. I never made it past the third therapy session. The therapist was subpar. The lady had a bad wig, and didn’t really care what was being stated. I would never use there services as is. It’s a short term facility, no genuine effort to keep ppl stabilized for the long term.
Always good staff there
The staff here is soooo nasty. If I am calling to disgust personal stuff with my psychiatrist, I should not have to go in detail with office staff ! They are rude and will talk to you in a condescending way......it's… disgusting!
My mother received great care at this Facility. After care was also provided. Phenomenal staff
No one ever picks up the phone, if you miss an appointment you get in so much trouble. But if you try to get a hold of someone, it’s nearly impossible.
Terrible service. Initial receptionist I called to set up an appointment with over the phone with was nice. I did an intake and was told even though I already have a therapist I have to use one of their own for… medication management which is understandable but why tell someone to cancel therapy with someone they like and have already made a connection with. After that I was sent to a prescriber who claimed to never receive any of my information or notes from my initial intake. She didn’t even know the name of the person who did my intake. I was told to take the recommended medication but when I asked for more information about what it was I was brushed off as if it wasn’t that serious. Next I was scheduled with their recommended therapist who canceled on me the morning of our appointment because she was apparently not in the office at all. I saw many red flags and decided to stay away. Super unprofessional behavior. I will be going somewhere else.
This place was extremely toxic. My friend went to the inpatient system and came back terrified. Staff slammed things in her face, and other patients were extremely rude to her. Staff members didn't stop them at all and… constantly blamed her. I would not suggest this for people who are sensitive or have PTSD. Though the experience wasn't great, my friend did get the type of help she was looking for. Staff took care of the patients for the most part, but they didn't listen at all. If you need a 3-5 day visit, this is the place.
An absolute disgrace to the mental health field.
They take children and adults. They don't really do much to help, and this places keep getting worse. People always leaving, and they don't treat people right. It's hard to get someone to answer
The whole team are great wonderful cheerful people.i thank them for saving my life.🙏🙏🙏
Doctor hersh & my counselor are amazing always on time always help the best they can, the front desk is very hard to get in touch with sometimes it takes me days but when I do get in touch with them they are also very… helpful, people need to understand that this is one of the only places in Essex county that accepts certain insurance plans they are overloaded with work ofcourse the front desk witch is the the processor of the computer it will not be perfect when it's overwhelmed, my advice is to just call every few hrs don't wait until last minute. Don't bombard there phones every few mins calling that will just make it worse just give them a few phone calls a day one every few hrs they will def eventually catch up & start answering if not the first day, then def by the next day you will be helped.
The only reason this place gets 3 stars is Dr Taha. I love her and she is so positive, helpful and kind. She is excellent. Like many other people have mentioned, the front desk is never available, I’m constantly running… out of my medication because I can not get in contact with my provider. I’ve been in the SAME MEDICATION FOR 5 YEARS and hey ABSOLUTELY REFUSE. To write me a 90day script and are always trying to change my medication. It’s frustrating. I have bipolar type 1. I can’t keep going on and off my medication like this, it’s dangerous for me. If I had better insurance I’d go somewhere else but unfortunately this is one of the only metal health clinics that will take state insurance.
