Sober Living Homes in New Mexico

Sober living homes in New Mexico are shared houses where residents agree to stay free of alcohol and drugs while they rebuild daily routines, often alongside outpatient care. Listings sit mostly in and around Albuquerque, with others in Farmington and Las Cruces; 57 percent are in urban areas and the rest in towns.

New Mexico does not yet certify recovery residences, so the questions you ask before signing a house agreement carry real weight. This page covers how the homes work, what oversight exists, what residents usually pay, and what to ask about rules, medication and safety.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which New Mexico cities have sober living homes?

Sober living listings in New Mexico cluster in South Valley, Farmington, La Huerta, Albuquerque and Sandia Heights. South Valley and La Huerta sit near the top, while Farmington adds an option in the northwest of the state.

Across New Mexico, the larger cities of Albuquerque, Farmington and Carlsbad also draw people looking for a sober home close to work, family or ongoing outpatient care.

Rehab Centers in South Valleyhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/new-mexico/south-valley/
Does Turquoise Care cover sober living in New Mexico?

Most of the sober living homes in New Mexico record accepting Turquoise Care, the state's Medicaid program. Coverage depends on the member's plan, such as Presbyterian Health Plan or Molina Healthcare of New Mexico, so asking a home which plans it takes is a sensible first question.

Rehab Centers in New Mexico That Accept Turquoise Carehttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/new-mexico/turquoise-care/
Can I get sober living in New Mexico without insurance?

The New Mexico Crisis and Access Line answers around the clock at 1-855-NMCRISIS (1-855-662-7474). A Peer-to-Peer Warmline at 1-855-466-7100 runs afternoons and evenings for people who want to talk first.

Most of the sober living homes in New Mexico record state-funded care, and about half of the sober living homes in New Mexico record low-cost or sliding scale fees. None of the sober living homes in New Mexico record free sober living.

State Funded Rehab Centers in New Mexicohttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/new-mexico/state-funded-rehab-nm/

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home, also called a recovery residence, is shared housing free of alcohol and drugs, and unlike rehab it is not a treatment program. In New Mexico, residents pay rent, follow house rules and go to work, school, peer meetings or care such as outpatient treatment or an intensive outpatient program elsewhere.

A residential rehab program is different: clinical staff deliver care on site under standards set by the Health Care Authority’s Behavioral Health Services Division. A correctional halfway house is different again, because placement comes through the justice system and residents stay under corrections supervision.

Operators who say a home offers clinical services may mean licensed staff in the house or simply referrals to a provider nearby, so ask which one applies. No state body in New Mexico certifies, licenses or registers these homes at present, so the level of support a home claims is the operator’s own description.

Residents usually pay rent themselves, and no state source we found says Turquoise Care covers it. Get the house rules and a written list of charges before paying anything, and ask how drug testing works, whether residents taking buprenorphine or methadone are accepted, and what happens after a return to use.

Are sober living homes in New Mexico certified or regulated?

New Mexico does not currently certify, license or register sober living homes. The state has no recognized affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR). In other states, NARR affiliates use its standards to certify homes. A June 2026 presentation to a legislative committee proposed the New Mexico Coalition of Recovery Residences as a future affiliate. That remains a proposal rather than a working system.

No official certified-home list exists for New Mexico residents to check. Ask the operator which standards the home follows and whether anyone outside the house inspects it. NARR describes four levels of support, shown below. In New Mexico, the level a home claims is the operator’s own description.

LevelWhat to expect
Level I, peer-runResidents run the house together, with house meetings and shared rules. No paid staff work on site.
Level II, monitoredA house manager or senior resident oversees the home, with drug testing and structured house rules.
Level III, supervisedPaid staff provide daily schedules, life skills support and links to outside services.
Level IV, service providerStaff work within a provider organization, and the home is often tied to clinical programs offered elsewhere.

How much does sober living cost in New Mexico, and who pays?

Residents usually pay sober home rent themselves, and no New Mexico state source publishes typical rents. Ask for a written list of charges covering rent, the deposit, drug testing fees and any utilities or food included. Turquoise Care, New Mexico’s Medicaid program, pays for behavioral health treatment. No state source we found says it covers sober home rent, so check with your plan first.

Public recovery money in New Mexico flows through two channels. The first is the Opioid Settlement Restricted Fund, which is limited to opioid remediation such as treatment and recovery services. The second is federal opioid response grants managed by the Behavioral Health Services Division. Ask intake staff whether any local program helps with housing. Treatment court participants can ask their coordinator the same question. The court-ordered treatment and state-funded rehab listings cover publicly funded care.

What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Get the house rules in writing before you pay anything. Ask about:

  • curfew, guests, chores and meeting attendance
  • how often drug testing happens and who pays for it
  • any minimum or maximum length of stay
  • whether rent and deposits are refunded if you leave or are asked to leave

Discharge after a return to use is the question people most often skip. Some homes ask a resident to leave the same day. Ask whether staff help you reach detox, treatment or another safe place first.

Medication for opioid use disorder

Buprenorphine and methadone policies vary from home to home in New Mexico, since no state rule addresses them. Ask whether residents on medication are accepted, how doses are stored and whether take-home methadone is allowed. Listings for Suboxone clinics and methadone clinics can help you find a prescriber near the house.

Rights and safety

Federal fair housing law protects people in recovery from housing discrimination based on disability. It does not protect current illegal drug use. Complaints go to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and legal aid offices can help you file one.

Naloxone should be easy to find in any sober home, so ask where it is kept. A New Mexico Department of Health standing order lets pharmacists dispense it without a prescription. Tolerance drops after time without opioids, which raises overdose risk after a return to use. New Mexico’s 2007 Good Samaritan law gives limited immunity to a person who seeks medical help for an overdose. If you need support:

  • The New Mexico Crisis and Access Line answers 24/7 at 1-855-662-7474.
  • The Peer-to-Peer Warmline at 1-855-466-7100 runs afternoons and evenings.

How do you find a sober home in New Mexico?

Albuquerque International Sunport is the nearest major airport for 57 percent of sober living listings in New Mexico, and the median distance to the nearest airport is 7.2 miles. Elevations run from 3,130 to 5,310 feet. Of the listings, 86 percent sit within 25 miles of a named summit, most often the Sandia Mountains or The Volcanoes.

The listing filters cover gender, medication policy, populations served, location and languages. Related pages cover women’s programs and Spanish-speaking programs. Entries draw on public treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor directories and information providers send in themselves. RehabSeekers.com does not rank homes, so contact each one directly. You can also read more about sober living homes or browse treatment across New Mexico.
