Quetiapine Prescribing in Rehab Centers

Quetiapine covers a wide range: schizophrenia, both phases of bipolar disorder, and as an add-on in major depression. Sedation is pronounced at low doses, which is part of why it is prescribed off label for sleep, a use that carries its own debate.

Immediate release and extended release versions behave differently, and dosing for mood conditions is far higher than the doses used for sleep. If quetiapine is already part of your treatment, ask how a program handles continuity. Listings show accepted coverage and care levels. Compare the options nearby.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is quetiapine used for?

Quetiapine treats schizophrenia in adults and adolescents aged 13 to 17, acute manic episodes of bipolar I disorder in adults and children aged 10 and older, and depressive episodes of bipolar disorder in adults. MedlinePlus also lists major depressive disorder among its uses, where the extended-release form is added to an antidepressant.

The label notes that use for maintenance treatment of schizophrenia has not been systematically evaluated in controlled trials.

Second Generation Antipsychoticshttps://rehabseekers.com/medications/psychiatric-medication/second-generation-antipsychotics/
Is quetiapine the same as Seroquel?

Yes. Quetiapine is the generic name and Seroquel is the brand. Seroquel is the immediate-release tablet and Seroquel XR is the extended-release tablet. The Seroquel label gives 1997 as the initial US approval year, and the current label lists H2-Pharma as distributor under a license from Cheplapharm.

Generic tablets come in 25, 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg strengths.

Psychiatric Medicationhttps://rehabseekers.com/medications/psychiatric-medication/
What class of drug is quetiapine?

Quetiapine is an atypical, or second-generation, antipsychotic. The label says its effect could come from combined blocking of dopamine type 2 and serotonin type 2 receptors, and calls the exact mechanism in the labeled uses unclear. MedlinePlus describes it as changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain.

Its active metabolite, norquetiapine, has similar activity at dopamine D2 receptors to quetiapine itself.

Quetiapine is a prescription second-generation antipsychotic, sold as Seroquel in its immediate-release tablet and Seroquel XR in its extended-release tablet, taken by mouth for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and, in the extended-release form, as an add-on in major depressive disorder. It is not a treatment for substance use itself.

That distinction matters inside addiction treatment. Someone entering detox or residential care may already hold a quetiapine prescription for a mood or psychotic condition, and the question becomes who continues it, who monitors it and how the dose is handled across a change of setting. Quetiapine is not a controlled substance, but published reviews describe diversion in institutional settings, so storage and administration are fair questions to ask an admissions team.

This guide covers what quetiapine is approved for, how the immediate-release and extended-release forms are dosed and taken, how long it stays in the body and what stopping involves, the monitoring the label calls for, what it costs and who pays, how it intersects with substance use, and how to find programs that prescribe and manage it.
