Risperidone Prescribing in Rehab Centers

Risperidone is used for schizophrenia, for bipolar mania and sometimes for irritability in autism. It comes as tablets, an oral solution and a long-acting injection given every two weeks or monthly. Facilities recording it can prescribe and monitor it during treatment.

Not every facility that prescribes risperidone offers the injectable form, and that matters if daily tablets are hard to keep up. Prolactin side effects also come up more with this drug than with some others. Ask what monitoring is included, and compare listings on coverage.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is risperidone used for?

Risperidone treats schizophrenia in adults and adolescents aged 13 to 17, acute manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder in children aged 5 to 17, including aggression, self-injury and temper tantrums. In adults it can be used alone or added to lithium or valproate.

The boxed warning states it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis, where antipsychotics raise the risk of death in elderly patients.

Psychiatric Medicationhttps://rehabseekers.com/medications/psychiatric-medication/
Is risperidone the same as Risperdal?

Yes. Risperidone is the generic name and Risperdal, a Janssen Pharmaceuticals product, is the brand. It is sold as 0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 4 mg tablets, a 1 mg per mL oral solution, and Risperdal M-TAB orally disintegrating tablets. MedlinePlus lists both Risperdal and Risperdal M-TAB as brand names.

Second Generation Antipsychoticshttps://rehabseekers.com/medications/psychiatric-medication/second-generation-antipsychotics/
What type of drug is risperidone?

It is an atypical, or second-generation, antipsychotic. The Risperdal label gives 1993 as its initial U.S. approval year. The body converts risperidone into 9-hydroxyrisperidone, also called paliperidone, and the label says the clinical effect comes from the two combined.

Risperidone is a prescription second-generation antipsychotic, sold under the brand name Risperdal, taken as a tablet, an oral solution or a long-acting injection. It is labeled for schizophrenia, for manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder and for irritability linked to autistic disorder.

For anyone entering addiction treatment while already on risperidone, or starting it during a stay, the practical questions are who writes the prescription, who orders the blood work the label calls for, and whether the medication continues after discharge. Risperidone is not a treatment for substance use disorder, and the label says it has not been systematically studied for misuse potential, tolerance or physical dependence.

This article covers what risperidone is approved for, how it is taken and dosed, how long it is used, what it costs and who pays, what the label warns about alongside substance use, and how to find a program where prescribing and monitoring continue.
