Anthem decides the length of a covered residential stay through review against clinical criteria, not a fixed number of days, unless your plan documents state one. The program sends clinical notes and Anthem decides whether to keep authorizing days. Ask Anthem and the program to put the current authorization dates in writing.

Does Anthem belong to the Blue Cross Blue Shield system?

Elevance sells under Wellpoint in New Jersey, Tennessee, Texas and Maryland, and under Simply Healthcare and other names in Florida. Wellpoint also sells individual plans in Florida, Maryland and Texas. If your card reads Anthem, the 14 states are where your plan was most likely issued.

Who manages behavioral health

Anthem integrates behavioral health into its medical plans and manages it within the Elevance group. The group’s behavioral health company is Carelon Behavioral Health, formerly Beacon Health Options, and LiveHealth Online provides virtual therapy and psychiatry for members through the Sydney Health app.

For Medicare members, Carelon applies national and local Medicare coverage rules first. That is one reason Anthem Medicare Advantage and commercial members can see different answers to the same residential question.
