About Clive Behavioral Health – Clive
Clive Behavioral Health operates from 1450 NW 114th Street in Clive. The site sits in Polk County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. Nearby communities include Grimes, Johnston and Urbandale. Iowa draws people across long distances for treatment, so travel time is worth weighing against waiting time.
Hospital inpatient care, detox, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient care are delivered here, alongside medication-assisted treatment and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves.

Detox and Rehab Services at Clive Behavioral Health
Withdrawal management covers alcohol, benzodiazepine, cocaine, methamphetamine and opioid dependence and is handled on site rather than referred elsewhere. Stepping down into continuing care happens with the same team, so there is no second intake to sit through. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.
Buprenorphine and naltrexone are available and paired with counseling rather than prescribed alone. Co-occurring mental health conditions are treated in the same building rather than split across providers. Assessment decides the level of care, so ask what that involves and how quickly it can happen.

Clive Behavioral Health Reviews and Ratings
Reviews of Clive Behavioral Health help in two directions. Reading them helps you prepare questions for the admissions team, and writing one, if you have been a patient, helps the next family prepare theirs.
Admitted here because the ER in my town gaslit and manipulated my mother so I couldn’t go there and get transferred to somewhere better. My mom liked this place more because the providers communicated better. Not… anymore. My mom called 6 times a day to speak to the doctor that refused to see her as well as didn’t tell either of us whether he changed my meds or not. I was told the day before discharge that my doctor told my mother that I wasn’t able to be sent home because I would hurt myself when I told every single person that asked that I wasn’t depressed, wasn’t suicidal, and didn’t want to hurt anyone else and while telling my mom that I wasn’t ready he told me that I would be on track to discharge within two days. They lost my clothes, gave me someone else’s underwear, took 6 days to get me a pair of pants, a sweater, and ONE book despite having had people sort through everything. I was told to be patient and wait for my belongings despite it having been DAYS. People who arrived after me got their clothes before I got mine and I was following all the dress code rules. Most of the nurses were insanely passive aggressive, I was lied to several times about people getting my doctor when I was in a state of complete hysterics. This place deserves FAR less than 2.8 stars because the therapy hardly helps anyone in the adolescent unit and the community punishment is awful. One person ate a crayon and the entire unit got all crayons taken away completely. We had no other writing utensils and had pretty much nothing to do. The food made my stomach hurt so bad, my shower had no curtain, the blankets were PAPER thin, the units were freezing, and the staff were loud at night while bitching at us to be quiet so other people could sleep. The night staff didn’t call codes on a kid that was yelling and threatening us at 9pm while telling me and my roommate to be quieter when we were talking that night. The nurses treated all of us like we were small children and never like we were conscious humans. Some of the therapists were amazing but some of them were extremely pushy when we didn’t want to answer her questions. A tech insisted I call her miss nancy instead of just Nancy like I was in school. I came out feeling better but they put on my chart that I’m supposed to take 150mg, 100mg, and 50mg of the same med at the same time. Mind you this med can give me Stephen Johnson syndrome if increased too fast. Don’t send your child here please.
Every one who works here is kind . A lot of things to do to help yourself they keep you busy and it helps keep your mind busy and they work with you. The food is amazing. If you need help this is the best place to get it
Friendly staff and good food, but the classes could be more structured; it was hard to sleep due to the bright lights and staff coming in routinely.
Thank you To the staff, Especially Unit 6 you are all Angels and I hope you continue the amazing work that you do! From The Bottom Of My Heart, Lexi
Effective, if a little unorthodox.
Genuinely the most dehumanizing and dystopian thing I have ever gone through. I was here for 3 days and I had to beg for basic needs and to be treated as a human. I had no medicine or hygiene products until my second… day. They promise you you'll see a provider and therapist daily yet I never saw a therapist and had to beg the nurses relentlessly to see my provider. They refer to their patients as "inmates" and you Genuinely have to lie to get out. I had a tech my first day tell me "don't cry in front of any of the workers they won't let you leave" and from that moment forward I was in pure survival mode to get out. Please do not go here for help. You will leave more traumatized than when you went in.
They checked me in for a sore throat the showers are filthy slime coated toe nails in the rooms in the corners food all around on the floor I could not take a shower for three days and left woke up by yelling patient… several times not woke up for breakfast and searched for something to drink besides water from pitcher put on a unit where I didn't belong phone goes unanswered lots of questions nobody could answer they never ever looked at my throat and I had to ask the dentist to look in my throat and my tonsils are swollen with a bump on my left one more mean and unorganized staff
The worst place ever they need to be investigated. Their funding needs to be taken. They are forcing adults and young children to do a skin check, which is not a skin check. You have to take off your clothes strip butt,… naked bend over and cough and squat like you’re in jail. If you don’t do it, they will make you very uncomfortable your whole stay there and have someone follow you and watch you while you go to the restroom regardless if it’s the number one or the number two they also don’t have any clothing like they say they don’t have a fair amount of race people that worked there the doctor the female doctor pacifically they have that works under the main doctor has the worst attitude ever she doesn’t even get to know you or find out any of your background information and she just starts prescribing off all type of medicine psych meds at that that could have very severe symptoms or could possibly interact with your body and a total different way ask me they need to fire all the staff and start over the only appropriate staff they had there was a supervisor who went by the name of MISS JACKIE shouts out to MISS JACKIE for doing such an amazing job. She should be the lead of that whole building. By the way, they did not follow any protocol or policies with up on releasing me. I was left stranded in the parking lot once released told I Would receive a cab to get back to my destination no cab ever came when I called they did not answer the phone. They refuse to come down and help me. I had to literally find my own way home all the way from Clive, Iowa back to the Des Moines area didn’t even offer me a place to stay or a safe environment to go back into the worst place ever and the sad part about it is these are people who need the most help in life. These people are mentally unstable people’s children are there and we depend on psychiatric and hospitals Help to help make the community in society better but it looks like we’ll never have that from here. By the way What are they doing with all the funding for programs like this?
Nightmare facility! Showering is not mandatory even further mentally ill because it’s up to their discretion the patients. Try to get through to your child or significant other and that’s impossible. Takes 13 phone… calls. Definitely Will never be placing my son In their care ever again. Very unprofessional place. I don’t understand how they’re still running the way they do. I don’t understand how they can run a facility that is for mental illness and not enforce the need to shower! This place is a joke. It needs to be shut down.
This place is absolutely horrendous. They don't answer phones, they don't want to let family speak to a patient and if they get annoyed with you calling they will tell you the code is incorrect even though it's not. My… family that is in there said the are physically abusive and she is covered in bruises because of it. She said they keep giving her medication to sleep and haven't offered her any food and she hasn't ate anything since she's been there which has been over 24 hours. I'm going to report this place as it is absolutely disgusting that they treat people who are there for help and to get better in such a deplorable manner.
Worst service ever, waited over 2 hours, locked in a room and when I stated I wanted to leave they still wouldn't let us out for at least another 15-20 minutes
The experience was great the staff were willing to work with my medical issues and they were very nice and understanding. The only issue i ran into was that they misplaced all of my clothes and i waited in intake for 7… hours and they forgot about me and I have type 1 diabetes and during that 7 hours I didnt have my life saving medication and I got sick but everything else was great
My son (14yrs) was there just under 2 weeks total. He voiced he didn’t like that he wasn’t able to go to his room and rest during the day even when he was really tired. I got an update on him from the provider after he… had been there a few days and was told they would call me the next day.i did not hear from the provider again the whole time he was there. The provider said they were going to do some labs to check on concerns the provider and I shared.. and they never did. Medication changes were made without my input, knowledge, or consent. Several of the days I did call I didn’t get to talk to anyone because the phone on the unit just rang and rang (I sat and let it ring for over 5 minutes). My son injured himself and I found out a few days later when I was able to come for visiting hours. I was told I would have 24hours notice for discharge, I was called about 1pm the day they wanted to discharge him, leaving me to scramble to get there (with a 1-1/2hour drive). **Update for a second visit my son had at this facility** Was not given the patient access code upon admission and when I tried to call and check on him was denied due to not having it.. understandably... but then whomever it was on the phone refused to provide me with any resources to gain the code other then "you'll have to wait until someone calls you", but then also refused to have anyone call me ( I am his mother and legal guardian). The next day there was an incident and the nurse had to call me about and thankfully provided the code to me then. Had that incident not happened I would not have been able to check on him or get any kind of updates. Several days later there was an incident that required my son to go to Mercy One emergency room, I asked that they call as soon as he returned no matter what time it was. I had to call the next day and find out what the result was. A little while later the doctor called me saying he was ready for discharge. The discharge planner called and we went over everything necessary, I requested a copy of the ER discharge summary from Mercy One the night before so could assure directions were followed for his injury. I arrived to pick him up in the evening as planned and the ER discharge was not provided. I asked the tech that brought him down for it and he told me I had everything I needed for discharge. I told him it wasn't and again asked and he shrugged and told me I would have to figure it out with Mercy One. I asked again and he radioed up to the unit, where they said again I had all the discharge paperwork I needed. I have since had several email exchanges with the discharge planner, whom still won't provide the paperwork. To be clear, his discharge instructions from Clive state nothing about his injured hand or what I am supposed to do for it. Trying to get the paperwork from Mercy One has also been a nightmare. His medication changes were also sent to the pharmacy, but still waiting almost a week later for the provider to authorize the PA for them so he has not had his medications.
I’m not sure how I felt about the inpatient ward. It was a very humbling experience.
Lost track of peoples things and put me on way too high of medine went I needed therapy more than medicine and they pick favorites no consistently and bad with preventing escalation
This place is terrible, I was admitted here a little over a year ago and the staff were terrible; if you were getting verbally assaulted by another patient they would just ignore it or stand there and do nothing. The… staff refused to give me a bag of toiletries (shampoo/soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a hair brush) multiple times in the first day, the first couple of times I asked they would tell me "You should already have gotten them" then would brush me off. It was like the 5th time I asked before they gave it to me.
I would like to say that this place has improved tremendously from my first admission a few years ago, staff were way more attentive, polite and compassionate and Bobby specifically is an incredible inpatient therapist,… his groups are always helpful. I am however VERY unimpressed with the disrespectful demeanor of many staff members on the unit. I was on CLU6 and almost everyday there was an example of unprofessional conduct. There should never be a moment staff yells at a patient, thats going to cause a breakdown or trigger something worse. When someone calls answer the phone and notify the patient every single time a call comes from them. That is standard hospital practice regardless of time of day. Staff should NEVER touch a patient to wake them and never wake them with a loud voice. Patients admitted are facing a life or death matter nothing less and the way staff talk can cause a patient to fully give up. There is never a good reason to speak to a patient in a way that differs from kindness and compassion in a psych setting.
Clive once again has been great. I'm sure now that there is no better behavior health hospitals in the country. It all starts with doctor Omar. Doctor Omar puts you first and shows nothing other than great energy. And… the staff, the techs, the nurses and everyone of them are truly great, Clive is on another level. They show unconditional love. I love you for that Clive God bless them all. And thanks for everything. DYSON
As a parent, my experience with Clive Behavioral Health was incredibly frustrating and disappointing. I was explicitly told that because my son voluntarily admitted himself, he could sign himself out whenever he chose.… Based on that information, I believed he had the ability to leave if he decided treatment was not right for him. When my son later requested to leave, he was not allowed to do so. If there were legal or clinical reasons that prevented his discharge, that should have been communicated honestly from the beginning. Instead, I was given information that turned out to be inaccurate, leaving both my son and our family confused, frustrated, and feeling misled. Mental health treatment depends on trust, honesty, and clear communication. Families deserve accurate information about a patient's rights and what to expect throughout the admission process. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. I hope Clive Behavioral Health takes accountability and ensures that future patients and their families receive truthful, consistent information during what is already an incredibly difficult and emotional time.
Terrible place. They don't help they lock you in a room with no phone, no communication and it's frankly scary. When someone is going to get help with mental health they make it way worse. It's like a jail like your… being punished for asking for help. I would not take anyone to this place! Waste of time, money and it will make your mental health worse. It is really sad they make you not even want to ask for help. Please do better!!!! This place needs closed down!
I hope everything one is doing good amazing place
idk it was fine i guess. they held me from thursday night to monday morning for SI. staff was generally friendly minus a couple of small hiccups. my gender identity was very well respected. food seemed mostly decent.… not a whole lot to do. it was my first and hopefully only psych hold. depending on availability of beds you might get a roommate. group therapy sessions were low key and low pressure when the facilitator showed up but they weren't very reliable in my opinion. still trying to convince myself it was better than jumping but i am working with my therapist of 3 years on that so i anticipate getting there with it someday. thanks unit 5 for keeping me safe and keeping me company. pro tip? take a selfie at the front door when you leave. baller profile pic for dating apps. laura, skylar, steven, manny, you guys will always be in my heart. take care of yourself - i know, easier said than done...
very professional and kind to help at every moment, they personally helped me a lot, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
thay have good staff but this place can go downhill at night
This place is absolutely terrible I do not recommend anyone come here it is not helpful for the patient or there family my grandma sat on the phone for 20 minutes and no one answered my mother in law sat on the phone… for 55 minutes that’s disgraceful I sat on the phone for 30 minutes and it hit 10pm so we never got to talk to her that’s no fair to her or her family she could be upset cause she thought we never called and that’s not fair to her or her family they haven’t helped at all this is a horrible place I do not recommend
My experience with Clive was really bad, and I would caution anyone seeking help there. Extremely poor communication, lack of efficiency, I was mislead by medical professionals, I was told the date of my discharge… multiple times and every day it kept changing due to them "not being ready." I felt like a digit, not a human, and there is little to no care from most of the nurses, who were often quite rude. My mental health was worse coming out than going in. I was told I just needed to stay for two days to change med doses, and it quickly turned into a week. When I asked to leave because I had been stable since I had been there, my doctor said if I didn't voluntarily sign myself in after my court hold was up she would contact the court and get a other hold from me. My doctor also manipulated me, telling me that she thought it vets if I contacted my parents, even though I told her I didn't want to, and she said that if I did, I could get out on Saturday instead of Monday. Well, Saturday came round, and again she said she had some more papers to do. Although I called my parents and did every she told me to, she only discharged me on Monday. None of the other patients in my unit felt comfortable or okay at Clive, and I would definitely advise you to not go there if you are considering it. The group therapy is pretty superficial except for Bobby (shout out to you!!), the nurses rude, my experience with the doctors, pretty manipulative and concerning, and my friends and family were unable to contact me easily but had an extremely rough and rude time of it. I never usually put reviews on Google, because I'm not generally vindictive or angry, but this time I felt compelled to prevent someone struggling like me from experiencing something that has left me with more memories and trauma to recover from than before. Stay safe!
Well they changed my child meds and was doing good till 2 days after he was released. Took 3 days to send his meds in and now it's been 5 days and still no meds because they have to be pre authorized. It's be hell with… him the past few days and still no light and the end of the tunnel. To me it was a waste of time. The meds doctor could have done the same thing.
