Rehabs That Take MedStar Health

MedStar Health is a Maryland and Washington, DC health system whose plans include MedStar Family Choice for Medicaid members and MedStar Medicare Choice for Medicare Advantage members.Treatment centers in Maryland name MedStar Health on their own websites. Each MedStar product has its own network and benefit rules. Drug and alcohol treatment coverage can include detox, residential and outpatient care, depending on the plan and medical need. In Maryland, many Medicaid substance use services are managed through the state’s public behavioral health system rather than the health plan itself. Before admission, contact the plan and the facility about network status, prior authorization and cost.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does MedStar Health cover rehab?

Yes, through MedStar Family Choice, the Medicaid plan MedStar Health owns in Maryland and Washington DC. In DC the plan itself covers detox, residential treatment and medication assisted treatment. In Maryland, substance use care is paid by Maryland Medicaid's Public Behavioral Health System rather than by the plan.

MedStar Health is also a hospital system, so a program saying it takes MedStar usually means MedStar Family Choice Medicaid.

Medicaid Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/medicaid/
Is MedStar Family Choice the same as MedStar Health?

No, MedStar Family Choice is the insurance plan; MedStar Health is the not-for-profit hospital system that owns it, with 10 hospitals and more than 300 care locations across Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC. The plan is a provider-sponsored Medicaid managed care organization serving Maryland and Washington DC.

MedStar Health hospitals also run psychiatric units, partial hospitalization and an addiction intensive outpatient program, so the same name can mean a provider rather than a payer.

Medicaid Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/medicaid/
Is MedStar Family Choice Medicaid?

Yes. MedStar Family Choice is one of nine Maryland HealthChoice Medicaid managed care organizations and also serves the Maryland Children's Health Program. In Washington DC it covers DC Healthy Families, the DC Healthcare Alliance, the Immigrant Children's Program and, from January 2026, the Healthy DC Plan.

No marketplace or Medicare Advantage products are sold under the name. MedStar Select, a separate plan, is open only to MedStar Health associates and their families.

MedStar Health is a not-for-profit hospital system headquartered in Columbia, Maryland, and its only health plan business is MedStar Family Choice, a provider-sponsored Medicaid managed care plan in Maryland and the District of Columbia. A card that says MedStar almost always means Medicaid coverage, so the route into addiction treatment runs through the rules of Maryland HealthChoice or DC Healthy Families rather than through a commercial benefit.

The second thing to know is that MedStar is also a care provider: 10 hospitals, more than 300 care locations, 37,000 associates and $9 billion in revenue across Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC, with inpatient psychiatric units, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care and an addiction IOP at Washington Hospital Center. A program that says it accepts MedStar is usually describing MedStar Family Choice; a MedStar hospital unit is the treating provider, not the payer. A third name, MedStar Select, is the self-funded plan for MedStar associates and their families, administered by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield on 833-895-0292.

This guide sets out which body actually pays for substance use treatment in each jurisdiction, the levels of care covered, where authorization applies, what a member pays, how medication is handled, and how to find a program that takes the plan.
