Sober Living Homes in Indiana

Sober living homes in Indiana are shared, alcohol- and drug-free houses where people in recovery pay rent and follow house rules, often after residential treatment or alongside outpatient care. Indiana’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction runs a recovery residence designation, so you can ask about a home’s standing with the state before you sign anything.

Listings on RehabSeekers.com draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and details supplied by the providers themselves. Most recovery housing listed here sits in towns rather than large cities, around places such as Kokomo, Columbus, Bloomington and South Bend.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Indiana cities have sober living homes?

Kokomo is where Indiana sober living listings cluster first, with Columbus, Bloomington, South Bend and Indianapolis following in that order. A sober home in one of these cities offers a substance-free place to live, with house rules and shared expectations among residents.

Indianapolis, Bloomington and Kokomo also count among the larger cities nearby. Living close to a bigger city can make jobs, public transit and outpatient appointments easier to reach while someone settles into daily routines.

Rehab Centers in Kokomohttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/indiana/kokomo/
Is sober living covered by Indiana Medicaid?

Indiana Medicaid generally pays for treatment services rather than rent, but nearly all of the sober living homes in Indiana record accepting it, often for linked outpatient or recovery services. Residents should ask the house which plans it works with, such as Anthem, CareSource or UnitedHealthcare, and what housing costs remain their own.

Rehab Centers in Indiana That Accept Indiana Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/indiana/indiana-medicaid/
Which sober living homes in Indiana are close to a river?

The Driftwood River is the waterway named most frequently near sober living homes in Indiana. The Mississinewa River comes next, followed by the South Fork Eel River, among rivers near homes across the state.

Most of the sober living homes in Indiana sit within 25 miles of a river. The median distance to the nearest river is about 15.5 miles, so a riverside setting depends on the town and is worth asking about before moving in.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home is shared housing where residents agree to stay free of alcohol and drugs, and unlike rehab it is not a treatment program. Residents usually work, study or attend outpatient care during the day and return to an Indiana house with rules, chores and peer support.

Residential treatment is different because a licensed program provides counseling and medical oversight on site, which you can compare on the residential rehab in Indiana page. Recovery housing is also not a correctional halfway house run under the justice system, although some homes accept residents referred through probation or court-ordered programs in Indiana.

Some Indiana homes sit alongside clinical services, and the difference matters. Rent pays for housing, while therapy and medication are billed separately by a provider, often through outpatient rehab or an intensive outpatient program. Residents usually cover rent themselves, so ask for a written fee list.

Indiana’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction designates recovery residences at three levels of support, and under House Enrolled Act 1296 a home may call itself a recovery residence only if it is registered with the division and in good standing. Before paying a deposit, find out from the house manager which level applies and whether residents taking buprenorphine or methadone are accepted.

Are sober living homes in Indiana certified or regulated?

Indiana has a state recovery residence designation run by the Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA), part of the Family and Social Services Administration. DMHA designates homes at NARR Levels II, III and IV, using standards drawn mostly from the National Alliance for Recovery Residences, and homes apply through a DMHA portal. Under House Enrolled Act 1296, a provider may use the words recovery residence only if it is registered with DMHA and in good standing. Indiana’s NARR affiliate is the Indiana Affiliation of Recovery Residences.

Ask the house manager which level the home holds and when the designation was granted. If you want to make sure a registration is current, contact the DMHA recovery residence designation program directly before paying a deposit.

NARR levelWhat to expect
Level I, peer-runResidents run the house together; no paid staff on site
Level II, monitoredA house manager or senior resident oversees rules and testing
Level III, supervisedPaid staff, a set daily schedule and life-skills support
Level IV, service providerClinical and administrative staff, often linked to a treatment program

Levels describe staffing and structure, not quality. A Level II house can suit someone working full time, while Level III or IV offers more daily structure after long-term rehab.

How much does sober living cost in Indiana, and who pays?

Residents usually pay rent themselves, and Indiana has not published a standard rate for recovery housing. Fees vary by city, level of support and whether utilities, drug tests or meals are included, so ask for a written fee list. Indiana’s opioid settlement plan lists recovery among its funding areas, alongside Recovery Works, State Opioid Response and federal block grant funds; whether any of that reaches your rent depends on who refers you. A probation officer, treatment case manager or Indiana 211 can tell you what applies.

Indiana Medicaid and private plans should not be assumed to cover rent, so ask your plan directly; clinical care from a linked provider is billed separately. For coverage of treatment itself, see programs that accept Medicaid and state-funded rehab in Indiana.

What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Questions asked before move-in prevent most surprises later. Ask about house rules, curfews and guests, how often drug testing happens and who pays for it, any minimum or maximum stay, and the refund policy if you leave early. Ask too what happens after a return to use. Same-day discharge can leave a person without housing at a moment of high overdose risk, so look for a home with a plan instead, such as a referral to detox in Indiana or time to arrange a safe place to go.

Your rights as a resident

Federal fair housing law treats recovery from a substance use disorder as a disability, protecting people in recovery who are not currently using illegal drugs. Landlords and local authorities generally cannot refuse a resident or block a recovery home because of that history. If you face discrimination, you can file a fair housing complaint with the federal housing department, and a county legal aid office can help.

Can you live in a sober home in Indiana while taking medication for opioid use disorder?

Many homes accept residents taking buprenorphine or methadone, but not all do, so ask before applying. Ask how medication is stored and whether residents can travel for daily dosing. Indiana law bars DMHA from approving new opioid treatment programs, so if you take methadone, check the distance to your current clinic using methadone clinics in Indiana or Suboxone clinics in Indiana.

Naloxone and safety in the home

Tolerance drops after time without opioids, so a return to use carries higher overdose risk. Ask whether the home keeps naloxone in a known place and teaches residents to use it. Indiana has used a statewide naloxone standing order, and its Good Samaritan law gives limited protection from listed possession charges to a person who gives naloxone, calls for help, stays and cooperates.

Finding a home through these listings

Recovery homes listed in Indiana sit mostly in towns, about one in four in urban areas, at elevations from 450 to 960 feet. Most, 87 percent, are within 25 miles of a river, most often the Driftwood or the Mississinewa. Indianapolis International Airport is the nearest airport for more homes than any other, with a median of 28.1 miles to the nearest airport. Filter by gender, medication policy, populations served, location and languages, then call about openings. Browse sober living homes nationwide or all Indiana treatment listings.
