Licensing, accreditation and how to check a Michigan rehab

Are rehabs in Michigan licensed?

Yes, at most levels, but not outpatient. Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs licenses residential care, residential withdrawal management, inpatient hospitalization, methadone, mobile methadone units and prevention services under MCL 333.6233. Outpatient is no longer a licensed service category.

The license is issued by the Bureau of Community and Health Systems inside the department, and records sit in LARA’s license verification lookup.

Accreditation is separate and voluntary, and it carries more weight here because of the outpatient gap. Joint Commission accredited rehabs have passed an outside survey of charts, staffing and safety. CARF accredited programs have passed a similar review built around rehabilitation services.

How to check a Michigan rehab license in five steps

Search the licensed business name, not the marketing name: Michigan licenses the facility or agency.

Substance use in Michigan: what the data shows

Michigan’s decline came early and has flattened out. The provisional series puts Michigan at 1,945 overdose deaths for the 12 months to December 2024, 32.6% below the 2,885 of a year earlier (CDC provisional counts, 12 months ending December 2024). The 12 months to May 2026 brought 1,707, just 3.5% below a year before.

State figures count calendar years: 1,725 resident drug overdose deaths in 2025 on provisional data, with emergency department visits for suspected overdose down 22% in each of the two years to 2025 (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Escalating Disparities in Drug Overdose in Michigan, 2026). The same brief reports Black males with the highest rate of fatal overdose in every age group.

About 1.51 million residents aged 12 or older, 17.43%, had a substance use disorder in 2023 to 2024 (SAMHSA NSDUH 2023–2024 state tables). In 2024, 83.21% of those classified as needing substance use treatment did not get it, about 1.33 million people. Around 664,000 adults had a co-occurring disorder, and 352 listed facilities treat both.

Which parts of Michigan does the state’s overdose data point to?

Not to a county ranking. County overdose figures sit in the MiTracking dashboard, not a published table, so no county rate can be quoted here. The briefs publish something narrower: fatal overdoses with any history of homeless services clustered in urban and semi-urban areas, particularly in southwestern and south-central Michigan (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Homelessness and Fatal Drug Overdose Risk).
