No. CDC tells payers not to use its guideline to set rigid standards on opioid dose or duration and to make sure dosage-threshold policies do not cause rapid tapers or abrupt discontinuation. What is a 90 MME safety edit?

It is a real-time pharmacy alert that fires when a member's total daily opioid dose reaches or exceeds 90 morphine milligram equivalents, prompting the pharmacist to contact the prescriber before filling. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts started one on July 1, 2021.

Parity means a plan's financial limits such as copayments, treatment limits such as visit or day caps, and care-management limits such as required authorization cannot be stricter for mental health and substance use benefits than for medical and surgical ones. After a year or more of opioid use, CDC says a reduction of 10% per month or slower is likely to be better tolerated. For use lasting weeks to months, CDC suggests about 10% of the original dose per week or slower. FDA says no single schedule suits every patient.

How often will I need visits during a taper?
