Pain and Addiction Treatment

Pain and Addiction Treatment

Pain and opioid use disorder often arrive together, and treating one without the other rarely holds. Programs here work with people whose pain is real and ongoing, coordinating medical management with addiction care rather than asking someone to choose between the two.

What this looks like varies widely. Some facilities employ pain specialists on staff; others coordinate with an outside physician. SAMHSA records which providers use methadone or buprenorphine for pain management, and listings reflect that. Ask how prescribing decisions get made before enrolling, then compare.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Can you have chronic pain and a substance use disorder at the same time?

Yes, and the combination is common. NIDA lists chronic pain among the health conditions that frequently occur alongside substance use disorders, and states that almost half of individuals with opioid use disorder also live with chronic pain. SAMHSA's chronic pain advisory says both conditions need to be addressed together rather than one at a time.

Treatment for pain and treatment for a substance use disorder can support or conflict with each other, which is why one coordinated plan is recommended.

Chronic Pain and Substance Usehttps://rehabseekers.com/addictions/pain-and-addiction/chronic-pain/
How do people develop an addiction to painkillers?

Taking prescription opioids long-term for chronic pain is associated with developing opioid use disorder, according to NIDA. Chronic pain and the emotional distress around it may change how the brain processes stress and reward, raising that likelihood. In one FDA-required study, roughly 3% to 6% of individuals starting long-term opioid therapy newly met criteria over 12 months.

FDA reported that a personal history of a substance use disorder is one of the strongest and most consistent risk factors for misuse on long-term opioid therapy.

Prescription Opioidshttps://rehabseekers.com/addictions/opioid/prescription-opioids/
What is the difference between acute, subacute and chronic pain?

CDC defines acute pain as lasting less than 1 month, subacute pain as lasting 1 to 3 months, and chronic pain as lasting more than 3 months. The distinction matters because prescribing guidance differs by duration: for acute pain, quantity should not exceed the expected days of severe pain.

CDC's National Center for Health Statistics reported that 24.3% of US adults had chronic pain in 2023, and 8.5% had high-impact chronic pain.

Pain and addiction treatment is care for someone who has ongoing pain and a substance use disorder at the same time, handled as one plan rather than two separate ones. NIDA lists chronic pain among the health conditions that commonly occur alongside substance use disorders, and says almost half of those with opioid use disorder also live with chronic pain.

That overlap is why the two cannot be split apart. federal chronic pain advisory states that treatment for chronic pain and treatment for a substance use disorder can support or conflict with each other, so both conditions need to be addressed together. Stopping the opioid without a pain plan leaves the pain untreated; treating the pain without addressing the use disorder leaves the risk in place.

This guide covers what the combined condition involves, what federal prescribing guidance says, how tapering is done safely, which non-opioid and buprenorphine options exist, what treatment costs, who pays, and how to find a program that coordinates both sides.
