Rumination Disorder Treatment

Rumination Disorder Treatment

Rumination disorder involves repeatedly bringing food back up shortly after eating, without nausea or an underlying gastrointestinal cause. It occurs in children, adults and people with developmental conditions, and treatment usually combines behavioral techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing with medical assessment and nutritional support.

SAMHSA records eating disorder services without breaking them into diagnoses, so listings here are programs treating eating disorders generally. Ask directly whether a team has worked with rumination, and who handles the medical side. Compare levels of care and payment types before you contact anyone.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is rumination disorder?

Rumination disorder is a condition in which swallowed food is repeatedly brought back up, then re-chewed, re-swallowed or spit out, for at least a month. It happens without nausea or retching and is not explained by a gastrointestinal condition. The DSM-5-TR lists it among the feeding and eating disorders.

Gastroenterologists describe the same pattern as rumination syndrome, which the Rome Foundation classes as a gastroduodenal disorder of gut-brain interaction.

Mental Health Conditionshttps://rehabseekers.com/mental-health/mental-health-conditions/
What are the DSM-5-TR criteria for rumination disorder?

Four criteria apply: repeated regurgitation of food over at least one month, with the food re-chewed, re-swallowed or spit out; the regurgitation is not attributable to a gastrointestinal or other medical condition such as reflux or pyloric stenosis; it does not occur only during anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder or ARFID.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditionshttps://rehabseekers.com/mental-health/mental-health-conditions/co-occurring-mental-health/
Is rumination disorder the same as rumination syndrome?

Yes, in practice they describe the same condition under two names. Psychiatry uses rumination disorder and lists it in the DSM-5-TR feeding and eating disorders chapter, while gastroenterology uses rumination syndrome and the Rome Foundation classes it as a disorder of gut-brain interaction.

Under the ICD-11 it appears twice, as rumination-regurgitation disorder and as adult rumination syndrome, depending on the section.

Rumination disorder is a DSM-5-TR feeding and eating disorder in which swallowed food comes back up effortlessly, without nausea or retching, and is then re-chewed, re-swallowed or spit out, repeated for at least one month. Gastroenterologists call the same pattern rumination syndrome, and the Rome Foundation classes it as a disorder of gut-brain interaction rather than a feeding and eating disorder, which is why someone may be referred first to a stomach specialist and only later to behavioral treatment.

What sets this apart from every other pattern discussed on this site is that the main treatment is not psychotherapy at all: it is diaphragmatic breathing, a physical technique that competes directly with the abdominal muscle contraction that pushes food back up. Talk therapy is added only when breathing alone does not resolve it.

This guide covers who rumination disorder affects, what a course of treatment involves, how long it runs, who delivers it, what federal guidance touches, which levels of care apply, what it costs and who pays, what to ask a program, and how to find one.
