1199SEIU Benefit Fund

Rehabs That Take 1199SEIU

The 1199SEIU benefit funds cover healthcare workers across New York and the neighboring states, including nurses, aides, technicians and support staff. Addiction treatment is covered, and the funds also run their own assistance programs staffed by people who understand the industry their members actually work in.

These are self-funded union benefit funds governed by trustees rather than by insurance companies, so it is the fund office that holds the answers about what is actually covered. For healthcare workers there is an added concern on top of that, and it deserves a straight answer.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is the 1199SEIU Benefit Fund?

The 1199SEIU Benefit Funds are self-insured, self-administered union trust funds, not an insurance company. Jointly trusteed by 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and contributing employers since 1948, they cover over 450,000 working and retired healthcare workers and their families through three health funds.

The three are the National Benefit Fund, the Greater New York Benefit Fund and the Home Care Benefit Fund. Your Health Benefits ID card shows which one you are in.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Does 1199SEIU cover rehab?

Yes. Inpatient detoxification and rehabilitation for alcohol and substance use, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs and outpatient counseling are covered benefits under the National Benefit Fund, the Greater New York Benefit Fund and the Home Care Benefit Fund for members in Wage or Eligibility Class I and II.

Wage Class III members under the National Benefit Fund, and Class III under Greater New York, do not have the behavioral health benefit.

Does 1199SEIU cover detox?

Yes. Detox is a listed benefit under the National Benefit Fund, Greater New York and Home Care plans, covering inpatient detoxification with no charge at a participating provider. Non-emergency admissions must be pre-certified with 1199SEIU CareReview at (800) 227-9360 before the stay begins.

Since January 2022 the funds count medical detoxification and psychiatric stabilization as emergency services; for an emergency admission, call CareReview within 48 hours.

How This Coverage Works

1199SEIU is the healthcare workers union, and its benefit funds provide coverage to members across New York and neighboring states. These are Taft-Hartley funds, jointly governed by union and employer trustees, and they are self-funded rather than insurance purchased from a carrier.

Practically, the fund decides the benefit and administers it, sometimes using a network or a behavioral administrator to deliver the mechanics. The fund’s summary plan description is the governing document, and the member services line is the first call.

Coverage Depends on Hours

Eligibility in union funds is usually tied to hours worked and reported by a contributing employer. Someone whose attendance has slipped may be closer to an eligibility problem than they realize, and residential treatment means time not worked. Ask the fund directly how a treatment absence affects your coverage. Many funds have provisions protecting members in exactly this situation and do not advertise them.

Healthcare Workers and Licensure

This is the question that keeps nurses and technicians out of treatment, and it deserves plain treatment rather than reassurance.
