Sober Living Homes in Maryland

Sober living homes in Maryland are shared, alcohol- and drug-free houses where people in recovery pay rent, follow house rules and support one another during or after treatment. Most of the homes in these listings are in urban areas, and nearly all sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the South Branch Patapsco River.

Maryland certifies recovery residences through an office in the Maryland Department of Health. The guide below covers that certification, what residents usually pay, the questions to ask a house manager, and how to search Maryland homes by gender, medication policy and location.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Maryland cities have sober living homes?

Westminster, Mayfield, Towson, North Bethesda and Salisbury are where sober living listings in Maryland cluster. Readers starting from Baltimore, Washington or Columbia can compare these towns with the cities they know. Checking house rules, curfews and shared costs before a move keeps the decision practical and specific.

Rehab Centers in Westminsterhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maryland/westminster-md/
Can I use Maryland Medicaid for sober living?

Nearly all of the sober living homes in Maryland record accepting Maryland Medicaid, though asking the house operator directly is still wise. Specialty behavioral health coverage in Maryland is administered by Carelon Behavioral Health outside the HealthChoice health plans.

Wellpoint Maryland, Aetna Better Health and Jai Medical Systems are among the HealthChoice plans a member might hold. Asking which housing costs Medicaid leaves to the resident avoids surprises at move-in.

Rehab Centers in Maryland That Accept Maryland Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/maryland/maryland-medicaid/
Which sober living homes in Maryland are close to a beach?

Most of the sober living homes in Maryland have a beach within 25 miles, and the nearest one lies a median of about 13.9 miles from each listed home. Magothy Park Beach, Fishing Shore and Sandy Hill Beach are the most-named beaches, though distances vary by home.

Rehab Centers Near Beacheshttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/beaches/

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home, also called a recovery residence, is shared housing with alcohol- and drug-free rules that supports recovery but does not provide treatment.

Residential treatment is different. A residential rehab program in Maryland is a clinical service with treatment staff, and Maryland’s Behavioral Health Administration licenses treatment programs under COMAR 10.63. Many sober home residents attend outpatient treatment or an intensive outpatient program while they live in the house.

Correctional halfway houses are also different: they are tied to a sentence, parole or probation and run under justice system supervision.

Are sober living homes in Maryland certified or regulated?

Maryland certifies recovery residences through the Maryland Certification of Recovery Residences (MCORR) office, under the Behavioral Health Administration of the Maryland Department of Health. The certification comes from Health-General sections 19-2501 to 19-2504.

Maryland has no listed state affiliate of the national recovery residence association, so certification runs through the state office. A house that says it follows national standards may still lack Maryland certification, so ask to see its current MCORR certificate and contact the MCORR office with questions.

Referring staff may set their own conditions. If a court, treatment program or publicly funded service is sending you to a home, ask whether they require a certified residence.

Levels of support you may see

Many Maryland homes describe themselves using four national levels of support, which describe staffing, not quality.

LevelWhat to expect
I, peer-runResidents run the house together, usually with no paid staff on site
II, monitoredA house manager or senior resident oversees rules and drug testing
III, supervisedPaid staff, set schedules and life skills support
IV, service providerHousing linked to a licensed treatment provider, with clinical services delivered separately

How much does sober living cost in Maryland, and who pays?

In most Maryland sober homes, the resident pays rent and house fees directly, and no state source sets a typical price. Ask for the weekly or monthly fee in writing.

The Behavioral Health Administration runs Maryland’s State Opioid Response grant, which a 2022 department newsletter said included recovery support. Current awards may differ, so ask your treatment program. People in a Maryland Judiciary problem-solving court, offered in 23 of 24 jurisdictions, can ask their case manager about housing; see the court-ordered treatment listings.

Treatment and rent are paid separately. Maryland Medicaid and its HealthChoice plans pay for treatment services, but don’t assume a plan covers rent. The Medicaid listings and state-funded programs in Maryland can help you arrange the treatment side.

What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Before you sign anything, ask the house manager for the written rules and discharge policy, and ask these questions:

  • What are the rules on curfew, guests, chores and meetings?
  • How often is drug testing done, and who pays for it?
  • Is there a maximum length of stay?
  • Are any fees refunded if you leave early or are asked to leave?
  • What happens after a return to use?

Some homes discharge residents the same day after a return to use. A safer policy helps the person reach treatment or another safe place to stay.

Medication for opioid use disorder

Some Maryland homes accept residents who take buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone, but policies differ, so ask directly and ask how medications are stored. Residents can keep their prescriber through the Suboxone clinics or methadone clinics listed in Maryland.

Naloxone, tolerance and your housing rights

Tolerance drops after a period without use, so a return to use carries a higher overdose risk, especially soon after someone leaves a home. Maryland’s statewide standing order lets anyone get naloxone at any pharmacy without a prescription; it is also sold over the counter and free from the health department’s Overdose Response Programs. Ask whether the house keeps naloxone where residents can reach it. Maryland’s Good Samaritan law, Criminal Procedure 1-210, protects people who call for help in good faith from arrest or prosecution for certain listed offenses.

Federal fair housing law generally protects people in recovery who are not currently using illegal drugs from housing discrimination. Housing complaints can be filed with federal and state fair housing offices.

Where are Maryland sober homes listed, and how do you search them?

Most Maryland sober homes in these listings are near Baltimore, with fewer options in western Maryland and on the Eastern Shore. Baltimore/Washington International is the nearest major airport for about four in five of these homes, at a median distance of 10.9 miles. The airports guide covers travel from other states. Most homes also sit within 25 miles of the Bare Hills summit, at a median distance of 6.5 miles.

The filters on these listings let you narrow results by gender, medication-friendly policy, populations served, location and languages. Maryland has no dedicated state recovery housing phone line, and 988 is the state’s listed crisis and support number. For other kinds of care, start at the Maryland treatment page, or read the national sober living homes guide. Listing details come from government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings and information supplied by the providers themselves, so ask each house about its current rules and fees before you move in.
