Treatment Centers in Maryland That Accept Wellpoint

Wellpoint offers two routes to drug and alcohol rehab in Maryland: Wellpoint Maryland, the HealthChoice Medicaid plan once called Amerigroup, and individual plans sold on Maryland Health Connection since 2025. Medicaid members reach detox, residential and outpatient treatment through Carelon Behavioral Health, the state’s administrator, rather than through Wellpoint itself.

Every entry gives a number to call, the program’s services (withdrawal management, residential stays, intensive outpatient and medication) and a note when the program holds CARF or Joint Commission accreditation. Maryland’s program licensing records and government treatment registers supply that data. Filter by town or level of care, then call the program to ask about Wellpoint.

Does Wellpoint Cover Rehab in Maryland?

Yes, though the route differs by plan. Wellpoint Maryland, Inc. is a HealthChoice managed care organization, and Maryland carves specialty mental health and substance use treatment out of it, so Carelon authorizes and pays rehab for its Medicaid members. Programs that bill Wellpoint appear among the Maryland addiction treatment centers listed here.

Wellpoint in Maryland began on January 1, 2023, when the Medicaid plan long known as Amerigroup Maryland became the first Elevance Health plan to take the Wellpoint name, which Elevance uses where it sells no Blue Cross plans. In September 2024 Wellpoint announced individual plans for every Maryland county from 2025, and Wellpoint’s shopping page now offers 2027 coverage.

Does Wellpoint Cover Inpatient Rehab in Maryland?

Yes. Wellpoint Medicaid members get Medicaid residential rehab at every residential ASAM level and hospital-intensity inpatient addiction treatment at level 4.0 through Maryland’s Public Behavioral Health System. Wellpoint’s individual plans cover inpatient behavioral care too, with Carelon Behavioral Health managing authorization for the plan under its own contract.

How long will Wellpoint pay for residential rehab?

Wellpoint Medicaid members’ residential stays in Maryland follow the state’s HealthChoice Section 1115 waiver, which aims for a statewide average of 30 days and caps a single stay at 60. Carelon’s manual chapter for Level 3.3 authorizes up to 30 days at a time. For Wellpoint individual plans, Carelon’s utilization management for the plan sets the length of stay.

Does Wellpoint need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

Yes. For Wellpoint Medicaid members, the rehab registers with Maryland’s behavioral health administrator, Carelon, and asks it for authorization at 1-800-888-1965, not Wellpoint. For individual plan members, Wellpoint’s Maryland provider guide says all behavioral health authorization requests go electronically through Availity, with Carelon Behavioral Health making the decision for the plan.

Does Wellpoint Cover Detox in Maryland?

Yes. Wellpoint Medicaid members can go through detox as outpatients, in a medically monitored residential unit (3.7-WM) or at Level 4.0 in a hospital or addiction care facility, all authorized by Carelon. Requests for 3.7 and 4.0 admissions are filed on the day of admission, and medical detox programs taking Medicaid appear in the listings.

Does Wellpoint Cover Outpatient Rehab in Maryland?

Yes. Wellpoint Medicaid members get outpatient counseling, Medicaid intensive outpatient programs and partial hospitalization through the state. For adults, intensive outpatient means nine or more hours a week. Wellpoint itself covers mild depression and anxiety in primary care, and its Medicaid extras include the CommonGround Recovery Library.

Wellpoint’s individual plans in Maryland, sold on and off the exchange, list in-person or virtual support from mental health professionals among their benefits, and outpatient behavioral requests go through the same Availity process as inpatient ones. A member can call Wellpoint’s member line or the program can file the request before the first outpatient session.

Does Wellpoint Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. For Wellpoint Medicaid members, Maryland pays substance use medications outside Wellpoint’s pharmacy benefit, through the Medical Assistance fee-for-service program and its Preferred Drug List. Wellpoint individual plan members use the plan’s own drug list, and Wellpoint’s Maryland shopping page says those plans cover some commonly used drugs at no added cost.

Does Wellpoint cover Suboxone?

Yes. Maryland Medicaid’s January 2026 medication list, which covers Wellpoint’s HealthChoice members, includes Suboxone and Zubsolv films and tablets, generic buprenorphine and the monthly Sublocade and Brixadi injections. Suboxone treatment taking Medicaid is billed to the state pharmacy program, not Wellpoint, under the Preferred Drug List’s prior authorization rules and quantity limits.

Does Wellpoint cover methadone?

Yes, for Wellpoint Medicaid members; the state pays for their methadone clinic care directly. Methadone maintenance programs request authorization from Carelon, and pregnant or postpartum Wellpoint members with opioid use disorder can join Maryland’s statewide Maternal Opioid Misuse program, which began on January 1, 2023. A Wellpoint marketplace member should call the clinic first to ask about billing.

Does Wellpoint cover naltrexone?

Yes. Maryland’s January 2026 Medicaid list covers naltrexone tablets and the Vivitrol injection for Wellpoint members, along with acamprosate and disulfiram for alcohol use disorder and naloxone for overdose reversal. Naltrexone programs taking Medicaid follow the state’s clinical criteria and quantity limits rather than any Wellpoint rule.

Wellpoint Rehab Centers at the Beach, on the Bay and in the Mountains

Wellpoint’s Maryland service area matters more than most insurers’, because its Medicaid plan enrolls members in Baltimore City and 21 counties but not in Allegany or Garrett. Its individual plans, by contrast, are sold in all 24 Maryland jurisdictions. Carelon handles Medicaid rehab statewide, whatever county a program is in, so the map limits plan choice, not treatment.

Wellpoint rehab near Ocean City beaches

Wellpoint Medicaid enrolls members in Worcester County, home to Ocean City, Berlin and Snow Hill, where fewer HealthChoice plans compete than in Baltimore. Rehab programs near beaches and Snow Hill treatment options need Carelon authorization for these members, and Wellpoint’s line answers plan questions. Wellpoint’s 2025 provider guide names one marketplace network, Wellpoint Maryland Essential, statewide.

Wellpoint rehab on the lower Chesapeake Bay

Wellpoint Medicaid also covers Somerset and Wicomico counties, where Princess Anne and Crisfield sit near Tangier Sound on the lower bay. Rehab centers near bays and Princess Anne rehab programs are close by, and Wellpoint Medicaid members there use the same Carelon line as members on the western shore.

Wellpoint rehab in the western Maryland mountains

Wellpoint sells individual plans in Allegany and Garrett counties, among the Allegheny ridges around Cumberland and Oakland, but its Medicaid plan does not enroll members there. Wellpoint marketplace members there can compare rehab programs near mountains, while Medicaid members in these counties choose one of the five statewide HealthChoice plans instead, still reaching rehab through Carelon.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Wellpoint in Maryland?

Browse the listings on this page. Wellpoint is accepted at every program listed, and members can sort by town and service and see phone and accreditation details on each entry. Medicaid members should ask whether the program is registered with Carelon; marketplace members should ask whether it is in the Wellpoint Maryland Essential network.

Wellpoint Medicaid admissions run through Carelon at 1-800-888-1965, a line answered around the clock for clinical calls, while Wellpoint Member Services, 833-707-0867 (TTY 711), answers plan questions weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Marketplace admissions start with the program’s request through Availity. The table shows where each Wellpoint line is available in Maryland.

Wellpoint rehab in Baltimore and Dundalk

Wellpoint Medicaid members in Baltimore City and Baltimore County can use Wellpoint’s Sydney Health app for their ID card and plan questions, but Carelon handles rehab authorization. Members can compare rehab centers in Baltimore and Dundalk treatment programs, and Wellpoint also offers a 24-hour Nurse HelpLine for medical questions.

Wellpoint rehab in Elkton and Cecil County

Wellpoint Maryland is one of the HealthChoice plans that enrolls members in Cecil County, which Jai Medical Systems and MedStar Family Choice do not serve. Wellpoint members there can compare Elkton rehab programs with treatment options in North East, near the head of the bay where the Susquehanna flows in. Delaware programs lie just across the state line.

Wellpoint rehab in Waldorf and Charles County

Wellpoint Medicaid enrolls members in Charles County, where Waldorf and La Plata are the main towns, and its marketplace plans are sold there too. A member who moves from Medicaid to a Wellpoint individual plan still gets authorization from Carelon at La Plata rehab options and nearby programs, but Carelon then acts for the plan rather than the state.

Wellpoint rehab in Hagerstown and Washington County

Wellpoint Maryland enrolls Medicaid members in Washington County, the westernmost county its plan serves, while Jai Medical Systems and MedStar Family Choice do not list it. Treatment centers in Hagerstown take these members through Carelon, and the Pennsylvania and West Virginia lines are minutes away, within reach of Medicaid’s residential coverage.

Can I use Wellpoint for rehab in a different county?

Yes, for Medicaid specialty care. Carelon authorizes treatment anywhere in Maryland, so a Wellpoint Medicaid member can enter a program in Allegany or Garrett even though Wellpoint does not enroll members there. Maryland Medicaid’s residential coverage also reaches private programs in Washington, D.C. and the neighboring states, under the same Carelon authorization.

How much does rehab cost with Wellpoint?

Wellpoint Medicaid members have their specialty rehab paid by the state through Carelon, and the HealthChoice copays in our sources are small pharmacy charges, in place since May 1, 2024 and waived for members under 21 and pregnant members. Wellpoint individual plan costs follow the Bronze, Silver or Gold tier chosen, with deductibles and copays set by each plan.

Wellpoint is only one of the payers Maryland rehab programs work with. Members whose income rises above Medicaid limits can move to a Wellpoint or other Maryland Health Connection plan without leaving the state’s exchange, since Wellpoint sells those plans in every Maryland county. Sliding scale rehab programs and Medicaid addiction treatment are listed beside Wellpoint programs.
