Rehabs That Take GEHA

GEHA covers federal employees, retirees and their families through the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. Addiction treatment is covered across detox, residential care, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient therapy, with plan brochures setting out the terms in more detail than commercial insurance usually does.

Federal plans are regulated by the Office of Personnel Management rather than by individual states, so state treatment mandates do not apply and appeals end with OPM rather than with a state insurance department. The annual plan brochure is the governing document and is worth reading.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does GEHA cover rehab?

Yes. Every GEHA plan brochure includes a mental health and substance use disorder benefit section, and GEHA names acute inpatient, sub-acute inpatient, residential treatment centers, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs as covered behavioral health services. What you pay depends on which option you hold: Elevate, Elevate Plus, Standard, High or HDHP.

All five of those levels of care need authorization before treatment begins, and the plan brochure published by the Office of Personnel Management is the governing document.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Does GEHA cover alcohol and drug rehab?

Yes, both are covered the same way. GEHA's authorization list covers behavioral health facilities and programs including mental health and substance use disorders at inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient level, and no substance-specific differences appear in the 2026 plan materials.

From 2026 GEHA removed the limit on urine drug screening tests, which had been 16 a year, across all of its brochures.

Alcohol Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/addictions/alcohol/
Does GEHA cover residential rehab?

Yes, with precertification. A residential treatment center must provide 24-hour evaluation and treatment under a licensed physician's direction, with room and board and 24-hour registered nursing services, and must be licensed by the state and accredited by a nationally recognized organization or credentialed by a network partner.

Sober homes, halfway houses, group homes, convalescent homes and transitional living centers do not meet GEHA's definition of a residential treatment center.

Does GEHA Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes. GEHA covers medically supervised withdrawal, residential and inpatient treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient therapy, alongside medication for opioid use disorder.

GEHA is a not-for-profit association offering health plans to federal employees, and it is one of the larger carriers in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. Its plans use national networks, which matters for federal workers posted away from major cities.

The Brochure Is the Contract

Every FEHB plan publishes an annual brochure setting out exactly what is covered, what needs prior authorization and what you pay. It is more specific than most commercial plan documents and it governs. Before you make any call, read the mental health and substance use section of your plan’s brochure for the current year, because it answers most questions directly.

Coverage by Level of Care

Detox

Covered where dependence is physical, with prior authorization typical for inpatient admission. Emergency care applies regardless of network.
