Rehabs That Take Arkansas Medicaid

Arkansas covers addiction treatment through Medicaid including withdrawal management, residential care, intensive outpatient, outpatient counseling and medication for opioid use disorder. Arkansas expanded coverage in an unusual way, using Medicaid funds to buy private marketplace plans for the expansion population rather than enrolling them directly.

That arrangement, now called ARHOME, means many people covered by the expansion carry a commercial insurance card rather than a Medicaid one. If your card names a private insurer but your coverage came through the state, you are in that group, and the network is the insurer’s.

Why Trust RehabSeekers?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Licensing and accreditation: Shown where the state regulator, The Joint Commission or CARF lists the facility.

Corrections welcome: Facilities can tell us what is out of date, and we update the listing.

100% independent: We are independent and never accept any commissions.

Direct connections only: Listings show direct contacts to avoid third-party centers.

Does Arkansas Medicaid Cover Rehab?

Yes. Coverage includes assessment, medically supervised withdrawal, residential treatment, intensive outpatient, outpatient counseling, medication for opioid use disorder and peer support, with little or no cost to the member.

How you access it depends on which part of the program covers you, and Arkansas is structured differently from every neighboring state.

The Private Option

Rather than enrolling the expansion population in Medicaid directly, Arkansas uses federal Medicaid money to buy them qualified health plans on the marketplace. The program has been called the private option, Arkansas Works and now ARHOME. Practically, that means your card may say a commercial insurer, your network is that insurer’s network, and the plan administers your benefits, while the state pays.

People in traditional Medicaid categories, including many with disabilities, are covered directly instead. Establish which applies to you before contacting a facility, because it determines whose network matters and who authorizes treatment.

Work Requirements

Arkansas has been here before. It implemented work requirements under a waiver in 2018, and thousands lost coverage before a federal court halted the policy. The state began checking compliance again in 2026 ahead of the national requirement that takes effect for most states in January 2027.

People participating in substance use disorder treatment are exempt under federal law. The exemption has to be identified rather than assumed, and Arkansas’s earlier experience showed that reporting mechanics, not eligibility, were what actually removed people from coverage. Keep evidence of treatment enrollment, open every letter from the state, and appeal any termination that happens while you are in treatment.

Coverage by Level of Care

Withdrawal Management

Covered where dependence is physical. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal carry seizure risk and emergency care applies regardless of coverage status.

Residential Treatment

Covered with authorization. Capacity is concentrated around Little Rock, Fayetteville and Fort Smith, with much less in the Delta counties and the south of the state, where distance compounds the shortage.

Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient

Both covered and generally quicker to access. Community mental health centers deliver these across the state including in counties with no private provision.

Medication for Opioid Use Disorder

Buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone are covered. Opioid treatment programs delivering methadone are sparse outside the larger towns, so office-based buprenorphine prescribing and telehealth are frequently the practical route.

Verifying Coverage

Ask before you admit

Is this specific facility in network, and what does my plan pay if it is not?

What are my deductible, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum this year, and how much have I already met?

Does detox, residential, PHP or IOP require prior authorization?

How is continued stay reviewed, and what is the appeal route if care is denied?

Ask whether your coverage runs through ARHOME and a commercial plan or through traditional Medicaid, because appeals and networks differ between the two.

What Treatment Costs

Members pay little or nothing. The rates below show what treatment costs in Arkansas without coverage.

Typical US market rates before insurance
Level of careMonthlyDaily
Medical detox (7–14 days)$1,500 – $5,200 per week$215 – $745
Residential inpatient$6,200 – $26,000$205 – $865
PHP$7,200 – $14,000$240 – $465
IOP$2,700 – $9,200$90 – $305
Outpatient$1,300 – $5,200$45 – $175

Coverage for Specific Substances

Methamphetamine has been the dominant problem across rural Arkansas for far longer than the opioid crisis, and it has no approved medication, so treatment rests on behavioral programs and on the practical matter of getting people to them.

Alcohol remains the most common substance overall. Fentanyl has arrived in the state’s opioid supply and raised overdose risk, though the absolute numbers remain lower than in the states to the north and east.

Rural Access and Telehealth

Arkansas is largely rural and its treatment capacity is concentrated in a handful of places. Medicaid covers non-emergency transport, which is worth asking about explicitly rather than assuming it does not exist. Telehealth is covered and is frequently the only sustainable form of continuing care for someone in a Delta county with no local provider.

Aftercare

Continuing outpatient care, medication management and peer support are covered. Arkansas has a recovery community organization network and certified recovery residences, and checking certification before moving into a house is worthwhile.

Community Mental Health Centers

Arkansas’s community mental health centers cover every county and serve people regardless of ability to pay. For anyone whose coverage has lapsed, who is waiting on an application, or who falls outside the rules, they are the front door rather than a last resort.

They also provide crisis response, which matters in a state where the nearest emergency department may itself be a long drive. Knowing the local number before it is needed is worth doing.
