Rehabs That Take Meritain Health

Meritain Health is an Aetna company that administers self-funded employer plans rather than selling insurance. Your employer pays the claims and designs the benefits; Meritain processes them and provides access to Aetna networks. The plan document, not an insurer, determines what addiction treatment is covered.

The consequence worth knowing is legal rather than clinical. Self-funded plans fall under federal ERISA rules instead of state insurance law, so state treatment mandates generally do not reach them and appeals follow a federal process rather than a state one. Ask your HR team for the summary plan description.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does Meritain Health cover rehab?

Yes, in most cases, though the employer's plan document decides the details. Meritain administers self-funded employer plans rather than insuring them, and the plan documents available include mental health and substance use disorder benefits covering inpatient, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient care.

Because these plans are self-funded, federal ERISA rules apply instead of state treatment mandates. Call the member number on your ID card, or 1.888.324.5789, to confirm what your plan pays.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Who owns Meritain Health?

Aetna owns Meritain Health, and Aetna itself is part of CVS Health. Aetna announced the purchase of Meritain's parent company, Prodigy Health Group, for $600 million on April 28, 2011, and Aetna joined CVS Health in 2018. Meritain began in 1983 as North American Health Plans.

The brand was renamed Meritain Health in 2006 and remains active, serving over 2 million members as of February 2026.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Is Meritain Health the same as Aetna?

No. Meritain Health, Inc. is a separate company and an Aetna subsidiary, administering self-funded employer plans instead of selling insurance. More than 90 percent of Meritain plan sponsors use Aetna's Choice POS II network, which is why Aetna's name often appears on a Meritain ID card.

Claims, precertification and member services still run through Meritain, so a treatment center bills Meritain rather than Aetna, using the member services number printed on the card.

What Meritain Is

Meritain Health is a third-party administrator owned by Aetna. When an employer self-funds its health plan, it pays medical claims from its own money and hires an administrator to run the mechanics: claims processing, network access, authorizations and member services. Meritain does that work for a large number of employers, using Aetna’s provider networks.

The card looks like insurance and functions like insurance, but the money is your employer’s and the benefit design is your employer’s choice. That distinction stays invisible until something is denied.

Why Self-Funded Matters Here

Self-funded plans are governed by ERISA, a federal law. State mandates requiring particular addiction benefits generally do not reach them, and appeals run through a federal process rather than your state insurance department. Federal parity law does apply, and for addiction treatment it is the protection that matters most.

Does Meritain Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

In practice, essentially always. Parity law applies to self-funded plans, so a plan covering medical and surgical care cannot impose tighter limits on substance use treatment. Detox, residential care, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient therapy are covered under the great majority of Meritain-administered plans.
