Rehabs That Take Aetna

Aetna covers drug and alcohol treatment on every plan it writes, because federal parity law requires substance use benefits to match medical ones. What that means in practice depends on which Aetna you hold, since an employer PPO, a Medicare Advantage plan and Aetna Better Health Medicaid behave differently at admission.

One thing worth checking first. Aetna left the ACA individual marketplace at the end of 2025, moving around a million members across 17 states to other carriers. If you bought your plan through HealthCare.gov and have not looked since, confirm who insures you now before a facility runs your benefits.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does Aetna cover rehab?

Yes. Aetna names substance use alongside depression and anxiety as a condition its mental health benefits address, and plan documents cover inpatient stays, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, outpatient visits and detoxification. Which levels apply depends on the plan you hold.

Of 18.8 million commercial members at the end of 2025, 15.35 million were in self-funded employer plans, so the employer, not Aetna, sets much of the benefit detail.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Does Aetna cover inpatient rehab?

Yes, with precertification. Stays in a hospital, psychiatric hospital, substance use disorder facility or residential treatment center are treated as inpatient confinements that can be covered, subject to the plan. One employer Choice POS II plan charged a $500 copay per stay in-network.

Skipping preauthorization for an out-of-network inpatient mental health or substance use stay carried a $400 penalty on both Choice POS II summaries reviewed.

Inpatient Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/inpatient/
Does Aetna cover detox?

Yes. Outpatient, or ambulatory, detoxification with medication administration is a covered service in a 2026 Choice POS II plan document, and commercial plans dropped precertification for outpatient detox on January 1, 2019. Inpatient detox counts as an inpatient confinement and still needs precertification.

Medicaid rules differ: Aetna Better Health of Florida covers ambulatory detox but requires prior authorization, while medication-assisted treatment there needs none.

Does Aetna Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes. Aetna covers addiction treatment across the full continuum of care, from medical detox through residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and standard outpatient therapy. This is not discretionary. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires plans that offer substance use benefits to apply no tighter limits to them than to comparable medical and surgical care, and the Affordable Care Act lists substance use treatment among the ten essential health benefits.

What varies is the amount you pay and the hurdles between you and admission. Aetna is a CVS Health company serving roughly 37 million people, and it writes coverage through employer plans, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid managed care under the Aetna Better Health name. Those three products have different networks, different authorization rules and different cost structures. Two people who both say “I have Aetna” can face entirely different bills for the same program.

What Changed for 2026

Aetna exited the ACA individual marketplace on 1 January 2026, ending individual and family exchange plans for around one million members across 17 states. Employer coverage, Medicare Advantage and Aetna Better Health Medicaid plans were not affected. If you bought an Aetna plan on an exchange and have not reviewed it since open enrollment, verify which carrier you now hold before assuming Aetna benefits apply.

Aetna Coverage by Level of Care

Aetna assesses treatment against medical necessity criteria, and for addiction that generally means American Society of Addiction Medicine placement criteria. An assessment should produce a defined level of care rather than whatever a particular program happens to sell.
