Sober Living Homes in Georgia

Sober living homes in Georgia offer shared, alcohol- and drug-free housing for people in recovery. Residents usually move in after treatment or alongside it, not in place of it. They pay rent, follow house rules and keep up with work, school or outpatient care while living with others who share the same goal.

Georgia has no state certification for recovery residences that we could find. That makes the voluntary standards of the state’s recovery residence association useful when comparing homes. These listings come from government treatment registers, state licensing records and accreditor listings, plus the details that providers send in themselves.

Common questions about Sober Living

Answered from what is listed here.

Which Georgia cities have sober living homes?

Sober living listings in Georgia cluster in Albany, McDonough, Yonah, Swainsboro and Dock Junction. Homes in those places offer substance-free housing for people who are working, studying or attending treatment in the community.

Anyone looking around Atlanta, Athens or Albany can widen the search to nearby towns, since recovery residences are spread unevenly across Georgia and house rules differ from one home to the next.

Rehab Centers in Albanyhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/georgia/albany-ga/
Is sober living covered by Georgia Medicaid?

CareSource, Amerigroup Community Care and Peach State Health Plan are Georgia Families plans under Georgia Medicaid, yet only some of the sober living homes in Georgia record accepting it. Rent and house fees may fall outside coverage, so ask the residence and your plan what is paid for.

Rehab Centers in Georgia That Accept Georgia Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/georgia/georgia-medicaid/
Which sober living homes in Georgia are close to a river?

About half of the sober living homes in Georgia lie within 25 miles of a river, and the median distance from a listed home to the nearest one is about 9.3 miles. The most-named rivers are the Mulberry River, the Yellow River and the Right Fork Soquee River.

Residents who want time near water can ask house managers which river is closest, how far it is from the house and how residents get there.

Rehab Centers Near Rivershttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/rivers/

What is a sober living home and how is it different from rehab?

A sober living home is shared housing where residents agree to stay free of alcohol and drugs, and unlike rehab it is not treatment. Residential rehab in Georgia gives clinical care on site from licensed staff, while a recovery residence offers a place to live, peer support and structure.

Many residents attend outpatient care or an intensive outpatient program while they live in a home. Correctional halfway houses differ again, since they are run by or for the corrections system as part of a sentence or release plan. People usually enter a sober home by choice, though some in Georgia’s accountability courts may be pointed toward recovery housing.

No state license or certification for sober homes appears to exist in Georgia. Voluntary certification comes through the Georgia Association of Recovery Residences, the state affiliate of a national alliance, so ask an operator for its certificate and support level, then check with the association that it is current.

Rent is usually paid by residents themselves, weekly or monthly, and no Georgia-wide price range has been published. Ask what rent includes, how drug testing works and who pays for it, the refund policy, and whether the home accepts residents taking buprenorphine or methadone, since medication policies vary from house to house.

Are sober living homes in Georgia certified or regulated?

Georgia does not appear to license or certify sober living homes at the state level. Certification is voluntary and runs through the Georgia Association of Recovery Residences (GARR). GARR is Georgia’s affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR). Homes are certified by the state affiliate against NARR standards, not by NARR directly.

Georgia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) licenses drug treatment programs and narcotic treatment programs. That licensing moved to DBHDD from the Department of Community Health on January 1, 2026. A treatment license covers clinical services, not housing. The sources we found do not say whether state-funded referrals must go to certified homes. A referring program or GARR can answer that.

To look up a home’s status, ask the operator for its GARR certificate and support level. Then contact GARR to ask whether that certification is current.

What the NARR levels of support mean

LevelWhat to expect
I, peer-runResidents run the house together, with no paid staff on site
II, monitoredA house manager or senior resident oversees rules and fees
III, supervisedPaid staff, set schedules and life-skills support
IV, service providerHousing linked to a licensed program that provides clinical services

How much does sober living cost in Georgia, and who pays?

Residents usually pay sober home rent themselves, often weekly or monthly. We found no published Georgia-wide price range. Ask each home what the rent includes, such as utilities, drug testing fees, deposits and move-in charges.

Some public funding exists. DBHDD runs Georgia’s State Opioid Response grant, which supports prevention, treatment and recovery activities. Opioid settlement money flows through the Georgia Opioid Crisis Abatement Trust for approved purposes. Whether any of that money helps with a particular home’s rent varies, so ask the home or a state-funded provider. People in court-ordered programs can ask their case manager what support applies.

Georgia Medicaid and private plans cover treatment services, but rent is a separate question. Ask the plan directly rather than assuming it pays for housing.

What should you ask before moving into a sober home?

Questions before signing a lease in Georgia should cover the basics:

  • The house rules, curfew and visitor policy
  • How often drug testing happens and who pays for it
  • How long residents usually stay
  • The refund policy for rent paid in advance
  • What happens after a return to use

A safe discharge plan matters. Ask whether the home helps a resident reach care or a safe place to stay, rather than simply asking them to leave that day.

Can you live in a sober home while taking medication for opioid use disorder?

Medication policies differ from home to home in Georgia, so ask before you move in. Some homes accept residents taking buprenorphine or methadone, and others do not. Ask how the home stores medication and whether staff have worked with Suboxone clinics or methadone clinics nearby.

Resident rights and safety

Federal fair housing law generally protects people in recovery who are not currently using illegal drugs from housing discrimination. A complaint can go to federal fair housing authorities. A Georgia legal aid office can explain the options.

Overdose risk rises after a period without use, because tolerance drops. Georgia’s Department of Public Health issued a statewide standing order in 2018 that lets pharmacies dispense naloxone to the public, and the Georgia Overdose Prevention Project mails free kits. Ask whether the home keeps naloxone where everyone can reach it. Georgia’s medical amnesty law, O.C.G.A. 16-13-5, protects people who seek help in good faith during an overdose from drug charges based only on evidence found because they called. The Georgia Crisis and Access Line, 1-800-715-4225, can help find crisis or detox beds statewide.

How do you find a sober home in Georgia that fits?

Georgia’s sober home listings spread beyond metro Atlanta. About a third sit in urban areas, nearly half in towns and a fifth in rural settings, at a median elevation of 965 feet. Three in five lie within 25 miles of a river, a median of 9.3 miles away, most often the Mulberry River. DeKalb Peachtree Airport is the nearest airport for two in three, and the median distance to an airport is 20.7 miles.

Filters can narrow listings by gender, medication policy, populations served, location and languages. Options such as women’s programs in Georgia appear alongside homes. For a national view of recovery housing, see sober living homes. All treatment types are listed under rehab in Georgia.
