Buprenorphine Implant Providers

The buprenorphine implant is a set of small rods placed under the skin of the upper arm, releasing medication steadily for around six months. It suits people already stable on a low daily dose who want dosing taken out of their hands entirely.

Insertion and removal are minor procedures requiring specific training, which is why fewer sites offer this than offer films or injections. Ask whether the same provider handles removal, and what follows when the six months are up. Compare the programs listed and contact them to check availability.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Is the buprenorphine implant still available?

No. Probuphine, the six-month buprenorphine implant, was discontinued in the United States on October 15, 2020, and no generic implant was ever made. The long-acting buprenorphine options now on the market are Sublocade, given monthly, and Brixadi, given weekly or monthly.

Some public health pages still list implants among buprenorphine products, so printed material can lag behind the 2020 wind-down.

Suboxone and Buprenorphinehttps://rehabseekers.com/medications/mat/buprenorphine/
What was the Probuphine buprenorphine implant?

Probuphine was a subdermal implant approved by the FDA in May 2016 that released buprenorphine continuously for six months. Four rods, each containing 80 mg of buprenorphine, were placed under the skin of the upper inner arm during an outpatient procedure and removed at the end of the period.

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)https://rehabseekers.com/medications/mat/
Why was the buprenorphine implant discontinued?

Titan Pharmaceuticals announced on October 15, 2020 that it would stop U.S. Probuphine sales and wind down commercialization. The company cited a burdensome label and REMS, limited sales and marketing capability, suboptimal reimbursement and a complex distribution channel, all made worse by COVID-19.

The buprenorphine implant was a set of small rods placed under the skin of the upper inner arm that released buprenorphine steadily for six months, so a person treated for opioid dependence did not take a daily film or tablet. The only product of this kind sold in the United States was Probuphine, and Drugs.com records that its sales ended on October 15, 2020, with no generic version ever made.

That matters because the search for an implant usually leads somewhere else. The long-acting buprenorphine options a prescriber can actually offer now are injections under the skin: Sublocade once a month, and Brixadi weekly or monthly. Both are given by a clinician rather than handed over at a pharmacy counter, and neither can be taken out again the way an implant could.

This page sets out what the implant was and who it was for, why it left the market, how the injections that replaced it are dosed and dispensed, what they cost and which payers cover them, and how to find a prescriber or program that stocks a long-acting buprenorphine product near you.
