Court Ordered MAT and Your Medication Rights

Federal guidance discourages supervision settings from requiring anyone to stop medication for opioid use disorder, though resistance persists in places. Providers collected here offer buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone, and separately record that they accept referrals from courts and probation departments in their state.

Which medication a facility can supply depends on its certification. Opioid treatment programs dispense methadone on site; office-based prescribers write buprenorphine you collect from a pharmacy. Listings show which applies. If your order names a program type, match that before you contact anyone.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Can a drug court make me stop taking Suboxone or methadone?

No, not as a blanket rule. The Department of Justice's April 2022 guidance says medication for opioid use disorder taken under a licensed health care professional's supervision is not illegal drug use, and it gives a blanket policy against prescribed medication as an example of an ADA violation.

That guidance is informal technical assistance without the force of law, so practice still varies by court. Raise it with your attorney and your prescriber early.

Court Ordered Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/specialized/court-ordered/
Does the ADA protect me if I take MAT in drug court?

Yes. The Department of Justice says the ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals in recovery from opioid use disorder who are not currently engaging in illegal drug use, including those taking legally prescribed medication, and courts are among the public entities the ADA covers.

The guidance also protects someone taking part in a supervised rehabilitation or treatment program, and says the same principles apply to other substance use disorders.

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)https://rehabseekers.com/medications/mat/
What is the difference between MAT and MOUD?

MOUD means medications for opioid use disorder: the three FDA-approved classes, methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone. SAMHSA says MAT and MOUD are not synonymous, because the term MAT has been criticized for implying the medication matters less than the counseling attached to it.

Court paperwork often still says MAT, while clinical and federal documents increasingly use MOUD for the same medications.

Court ordered MAT is shorthand for a knot of questions: whether a court, drug court or probation condition may require, allow or restrict medications for opioid use disorder while someone is in a justice-referred treatment track. The three medications at stake are methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone, and the answer decides whether a prescription written by a clinician survives contact with a courtroom.

Every other court-ordered page on this site is about where treatment happens; this one is about what may be prescribed while it happens. The law here is unusually concrete, built from federal disability-rights guidance, a string of named court cases, and a 2024 overhaul of the opioid treatment program rules, so this page leans on those sources more than any sibling does.

Below: whether a judge can order medication or forbid it, what the federal guidance and cases actually decided, how the 2024 rules shape take-home doses and telehealth, what the treatment costs with Medicare, Medicaid and other payers, and how to find a medication program a court will work with.
