About McLean Hospital – Belmont

McLean Hospital sits at 115 Mill Street, Belmont — around 2.0 miles from Watertown and 2.3 from Arlington. Anyone within about 4 miles can reach it without a major journey, which takes in Lexington, Cambridge, Newton and Medford. McLean Hospital offers detox, residential treatment and intensive outpatient. Approved medication runs alongside counseling, which is what medication-assisted treatment means in practice. Dedicated support for veterans is available. Licensing sits with the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Addiction Services, alongside federal SAMHSA registration.

McLean Hospital – Belmont Detox and Rehab Services

McLean Hospital – Belmont offers detox, residential treatment and intensive outpatient. Supervised withdrawal comes first, with the greatest danger in the opening seventy-two hours. The structured element runs during the day and people go home afterwards. Ask what the assessment recommends before comparing anything else.

The focus here is on one side rather than combined treatment, so anyone needing both should confirm what is available. Medication-assisted treatment combines approved medication with counseling and clinical review. Establishing what happens after the program ends is worth doing early.

I was inpatient here in 2025 and this is the best mental health facility I've ever been to. The staff here treat you like human beings, respect you and actually care about your progress. If you've been to other… treatment facilities then you know what I'm talking about, how they make you feel like you don't matter and they just want to get you out but not at McLean, you stay as long as you need and you truly feel better. They don't just pump you with meds so you're a zombie, they cater to your needs as a human and a patient. If you feel like you are having a hard time like I was, I highly recommend McLean hospital.

Both myself and a family member have been treated by McLean docs and I can't say enough good things. They treat people with respect and a lot of care. Just a higher standard than most places. Having been around the… mental health system, McLean stands out as being all around way better than most. If you are having issues, they really can help. Things can get better.

Emily Thorndike in the STU as a mental health specialist was horrible. Hearing her name years later made me remember I never left this place a review. Not sure how she even got licenses and is able to work with… vulnerable humans. Based off the reviews this place is STILL garbage

Lets make sure we are talking about the same Mclean hospital. There is Mclean hospital in Belmont MA and there is Mclean Pavillion hosptial. Pavillion if $62,000 for 14 day program. Mclean Belmont care lasts as long as… your insurance. When your insurance runs out, by are healed and discharged with less than24 hour notice to family. Just cause you call it "discharge planning" doesn't mean there is any discharge planning. Insurance runs out and you are out as soon as they check the "discharge planning" box. Did my brother more harm than good. They have a narrative and don't let reality impinge on narrative. Terrible terrible experience. Update: My brother was discharged from McClean while he was till very troubled and was provided no guidance/assistance for follow up care. He killed himself two years ago. I spent some time with him while he was hospitalized. I still have night mares. And I am still very angry. The hospital has never IN ANY WAY acknowledged this tragic outcome. His family had such high hopes when he was admitted based on the reputation of the hospital...which it turns out is VERY OUT DATED. Apparently it used to be a very good hospital. It is no longer. My heart breaks for individuals and families who are trying to get care at this hospital. My brother's experience at McClean resulted in his suicide. For his family; his siblings and his children, the pain is never over. We are suffering and will suffer the rest of our lives. How is it that there is no accountability for these tragedies?

Mclean is not a safe space for kids/adolescents that deal with mental health struggles. the condition of the hospital are awful, the building is very old and it's withering away. the staff do not know how to treat a… health crisis, Im not pointing fingers at the staff but I am trying to give advice and if you need mental health help I do NOT recommend .😊♡

I haven’t been a patient at your hospital but a close friend of mine was and speaks highly of you. She felt accommodated by your staff and appreciated how consistent meetings and scheduled events were. She says the only… pitfall is that your food wasn’t very good but it was edible. I thought it was really beneficial for her to be trusted with technology and contact with her loved ones. I feel like it’s integral to recovery to have support from outside sources and you did well with that. She’s in a new hospital now and she needs to call me from an unknown number and it’s really made it hard to communicate with her and has made her feel really isolated.

Outstanding, great, wonderful welcoming, professional, respectful and caring people! Making a difference in the life of the patients and including the entire staff members, from the Highest to the lowest position they… are awesome. Great hospital!

They are disorganized and a terrible place to have neuropsych testing done. They claim they never receive referrals from my PCP's office, despite me watching the fax being sent successfully with confirmation receipts.… They make the patient call 3-4 times before they "suddenly" found it. I would never recommend them to anyone. They also have a year plus waitlist and never call patients after a year of waiting. Horrible service.

Medical Social Worker named Joan Gillis is a very qualified employee of the hospital. Her talent and her wisdom come together in a way that surely makes the patient and the family members feel consoled and comforted by… her communcation she transfers. You have a special person working for you (ADMIN) Please acknowledge that as she is a rare one.

Do not seek treatment here. They are quick to diagnose BPD and completely overlook dissociative disorders, ptsd, hormonal fluctuations, etc. It’s easy for them to label you and gaslight you over any questions and… concerns about their programs and diagnosing process. For some reason this hospital thinks it’s okay to diagnose BPD in children before the brain is fully developed. This is highly controversial and harmful in my opinion. In my experience, their DBT program is a joke. You are put in a room with other mentally ill people giving you “advice”, with little to no guidance from the group leader. If you are afraid to take SSRI’s good luck! They will try to throw anti psychotics and other black label medications before something that may actually help, just because they don’t agree. You will be infantilized and made to feel worse than you began treatment. There are many comments like mine for a reason.

Went to McLean for ECT from in 2023-2025 to help with anxiety and depression. I completely regret it. I was desperate and thought it would help. I was left with severe memory issues and no change in anxiety/depression.… As for the staff, I have heard the nurses making fun of me to other patients while I was in the room. A couple months after I completely stopped ECT, I started having seizures for the very first time in my life. They are under control now but neurologists cannot determine the cause of them. If you care about your overall mental health and wellbeing, do not go to this hospital.

I was briefly a patient at McLean thirty years ago. I live in California and am 67 years old. There is not a comparable mental health facility in all of the West Coast. I was lucky to be able to be an outpatient and… have a doctor from Harvard treating me.

No one would fakeclaim someone for having depression based on social media but it is fully acceptable for McLean to fakeclaim professionally diagnosed DID systems whom they have never met in real life. Talk to systems.… Get to know us. We are diverse and healing loudly even if McLean and others want to claim otherwise because they can't stomach that young children go through repetitive, often severe, trauma at the rates that DID exisits (current estimates are 1-3% of world population, or same as red heads). DID is a creative survival mechanism that helped millions of young children survive. Some are covert, some not so much, and others a mix (and often as a system feels safer there is less masking, less being covert). Yes there are rough times, but like anyone there are happy times. Times where we as a community can come together to laugh, strengthen, and share our stories. It is time McLean for you to check your privilage and realize you are in fact part of the problem.

Checked in for some "preventative maintenance," and while the clinical side is solid, the experience was a mixed bag. The real stars of AB2 are the nurses and support staff—they are absolutely incredible and do the… heavy lifting to keep the place running. I won’t get into anyone’s business, but the camaraderie with the other clients is what actually makes the stay enjoyable; there’s a great sense of being in the trenches together. The downside is the communication. It often feels like the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing, and getting a straight answer during shift changes can be a real project. Plus, the facilities are rough: you’ve only got two showers with hot water, and one of them is currently a sanctuary for fruit flies. Go for the top-tier staff and the people you’ll meet, but bring your patience for the admin and the plumbing.

If you are struggling and feel like you’ve hit a wall, please read this: There is hope, and it is waiting for you at McLean Hospital’s North Belmont unit. I am someone who has lived through the absolute wringer of… treatment-resistant depression, comorbid ADD, and addictive tendencies. I’ve been inpatient at four other facilities, and every single one of them failed to move the needle. I thought I was unreachable—until I came here. For the first time in my life, I am actually feeling genuine, tangible hope. The ECT treatment here is nothing short of incredible. It has been the "reset button" I never thought existed, clearing the fog and giving me a fighting chance. But the technology is only half the story; the professionals here are the real miracle workers. A massive, heartfelt shout-out to Dana—your care is unmatched. To Dan, the social worker who actually listens and gets things done, and to Dr. Martina, whose expertise and brilliance saved me. You three are world-class. To anyone feeling lost in the system: Don’t give up. Seek out North Belmont. They see the person, not just the diagnosis, and they have the tools to help you find your way back. The North Belmont Hall of Fame: Jasper, Cal, Kate, Kelly, Joanna, Mattie, Olivia, Selina, Bridget, Dan, Dr. Martina, Tonray, Evelyn, Rachel, Judy, Sydney, Sarah, Dana, Karen, Mia, Eleanor, Dillin, Adrian, Anthony, Lilun, Alicia, and the entire Staff of North Belmont.
