Treatment Centers in Massachusetts That Accept MassHealth

MassHealth pays for drug and alcohol rehab across Massachusetts, from detox, which the state calls Acute Treatment Services, to residential programs, structured outpatient care and opioid treatment programs. Benefits are the same in every town, but whether addiction care runs through the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership or through the member’s own plan depends on the plan named on the card.

Each program shown accepts MassHealth, and the list draws on state licensing records as well as government treatment registers. Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Lowell and the South Coast cities sit alongside Cape Cod towns and the Berkshires. Filter by town or level of care, then call the program directly; MassHealth members pay no copays for covered addiction treatment.

Does MassHealth Cover Rehab in Massachusetts?

Yes. MassHealth covers drug and alcohol rehab as named services in 130 CMR 418.000, the substance use disorder regulation last updated by transmittal letter SUD-24 on March 28, 2025. Members on Standard, CommonHealth, CarePlus and Family Assistance can use the benefit at Massachusetts drug and alcohol rehabs, while MassHealth Limited pays for emergency services only.

MassHealth is the Medicaid and CHIP program run by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services, which extended coverage to low-income adults in 2014 through MassHealth CarePlus. Most members under 65 join an Accountable Care Partnership Plan, a Primary Care ACO, the WellSense Essential MCO or the state-run Primary Care Clinician (PCC) Plan.

Which MassHealth plan manages addiction treatment?

The Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership (MBHP) manages addiction treatment for PCC Plan members and for the two Primary Care ACOs, Community Care Cooperative and Revere Health Choice. Every other MassHealth plan, meaning the fifteen Accountable Care Partnership Plans and the WellSense Essential MCO, covers behavioral health itself and lists its own phone line in the enrollment guide.

Does MassHealth Cover Inpatient Rehab in Massachusetts?

Yes. MassHealth pays for 24-hour care at several levels: Acute Treatment Services, Clinical Stabilization Services at ASAM 3.5, and Transitional Support Services and Residential Rehabilitation Services, both at 3.1. The covered-services list adds Co-Occurring Enhanced RRS and population-specific 3.3 care, and residential treatment programs need a Department of Public Health license to bill.

How long will MassHealth pay for residential rehab?

MassHealth pays for the first 90 days of Residential Rehabilitation Services in each episode of care at residential rehabs taking Medicaid; authorization rules for other levels vary by plan. Members under 21 who qualify for EPSDT get all medically necessary treatment without service limits, with prior authorization.

Does MassHealth need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

No, not for Acute Treatment Services or Clinical Stabilization Services. Since October 1, 2015, MassHealth MCOs, One Care, Senior Care Options plans and MBHP cannot require it: the program notifies within 48 hours, review may begin on day 7, and no denial comes before 14 consecutive days. Fallon’s and Tufts’ ACO lists also show neither level needing prior authorization.

Does MassHealth Cover Detox in Massachusetts?

Yes. MassHealth calls its main detox level Acute Treatment Services, or ATS, at ASAM 3.7: round-the-clock, seven-day medically monitored care with evaluation, supervised withdrawal management and, where needed, a start on maintenance medication. Hospital addiction treatment at level 4.0 handles acute medical cases, and medical detox under Medicaid can also run as outpatient withdrawal management.

Does MassHealth Cover Outpatient Rehab in Massachusetts?

Yes. MassHealth covers the Structured Outpatient Addiction Program, or SOAP, a short-term day or evening program at ASAM 2.1, with an Enhanced SOAP for pregnant members, adolescents and people experiencing homelessness. Medicaid intensive outpatient programs and partial hospitalization under Medicaid are also covered, though some plans, Fallon’s ACO plans among them, now require prior authorization for both.

Outpatient counseling under MassHealth includes individual, group and couples or family sessions, and peer recovery coaches with at least two years of sustained recovery are a covered service. Acupuncture for withdrawal symptoms is covered for members with no history of seizures or delirium tremens, and every MassHealth plan covers outpatient rehab programs at Community Behavioral Health Centers.

Does MassHealth Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. MassHealth lists its addiction medications in Drug List Table 36, Drug and Alcohol Cessation Agents, last revised in April 2026, and members pay no copay for them. Opioid treatment programs dispense methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone together with assessment and counseling, and MAT clinics accepting Medicaid provide office-based care.

Does MassHealth cover Suboxone?

Yes. Buprenorphine with naloxone is on the MassHealth Drug List, and since November 15, 2015 plans may not require prior authorization to start it at 32 mg a day or less. Injectable Sublocade and Brixadi are preferred drugs needing none, Zubsolv and mono tablets need one, and brand Suboxone film is the preferred form at buprenorphine programs taking Medicaid.

Does MassHealth cover methadone?

Yes, through opioid treatment programs that hold federal certification and a Massachusetts Department of Public Health license. MassHealth pays for one oral methadone dose per member per day, or one injectable dose a month, along with the assessment, medical and rehabilitative services the program provides, and methadone clinic care is listed by town below.

Does MassHealth cover Vivitrol and alcohol medications?

Yes. Injectable naltrexone, sold as Vivitrol, needs no prior authorization, and MassHealth plans may not make a member try another drug first. Acamprosate and disulfiram are listed without prior authorization, and lofexidine for opioid withdrawal needs prior authorization for up to 14 days. The same drug list applies to naltrexone treatment under Medicaid.

MassHealth Rehab Centers on Cape Cod Beaches, in the Berkshires and Along the Connecticut River

MassHealth benefits are the same in Provincetown as in Pittsfield, because 130 CMR 418.000 applies statewide. What changes is the plan line-up: Accountable Care Partnership Plans are sold by service area, named after towns such as Barnstable, Pittsfield and Springfield, while the PCC Plan, both Primary Care ACOs, WellSense Boston Children’s ACO and the WellSense Essential MCO cover every town.

MassHealth rehab near Cape Cod and Islands beaches

Cape Cod’s Barnstable and Orleans service areas each offer one MassHealth partnership plan, WellSense Community Alliance, beside the statewide options. Falmouth adds WellSense BILH Performance Network ACO and WellSense Southcoast Alliance, Oak Bluffs adds Mass General Brigham, and Nantucket offers Mass General Brigham alone. Rehab centers near beaches include treatment programs in Hyannis.

MassHealth rehab in the Berkshire mountains

Berkshire County members in the Pittsfield and Adams service areas have one MassHealth partnership plan, the Berkshire Fallon Health Collaborative, with behavioral health at (888) 877-7184 and member services at (855) 203-4660. Mount Greylock and the Taconic Range frame both towns, and rehab programs in Pittsfield sit among rehabs near mountains.

MassHealth rehab along the Connecticut River

Pioneer Valley towns on the Connecticut River, from Greenfield through Northampton and Holyoke to Springfield, are where Health New England sells its BeHealthy Partnership, whose behavioral health number, (800) 495-0086, is the same as MBHP’s. WellSense Mercy Alliance covers Holyoke, Springfield and Westfield. Rehabs near rivers include Northampton treatment centers.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts MassHealth Near Me?

Browse the listings on this page. MassHealth is accepted at each one, and results can be sorted by town, substance or level of care. Every listing carries the program’s own phone number, so the first call goes straight to admissions, and rehab centers accepting Medicaid outside Massachusetts are on a separate page.

Admission to MassHealth detox or clinical stabilization starts at the program, which notifies the plan within 48 hours; for 14 days the clinician and patient decide medical necessity, under Chapter 258 of the Acts of 2014. MassHealth rehab in Boston

Boston members can choose among seven MassHealth partnership plans plus the statewide options, from Tufts Health Together with Cambridge Health Alliance to the East Boston Neighborhood Health WellSense Alliance. WellSense, formerly Boston Medical Center HealthNet Plan, authorizes behavioral health care through (888) 217-3501. Treatment centers in Boston and Roxbury rehab programs are listed above.

MassHealth rehab in Worcester

Worcester’s two partnership plans are Fallon 365 Care and Tufts Health Together with UMass Memorial Health, beside the statewide WellSense, PCC Plan and Primary Care ACO options. Fallon 365 Care’s behavioral health line is (888) 877-7182, and Tufts Health Plan members use (888) 257-1985 for authorization at Worcester drug and alcohol rehabs.

MassHealth rehab in Lowell and Lawrence

Lowell and Lawrence share the same four MassHealth partnership plans: Fallon Health-Atrius Health Care Collaborative, Mass General Brigham Health Plan, WellSense BILH Performance Network ACO and WellSense Care Alliance, and Fallon-Atrius members reach behavioral health at (888) 777-1207. Haverhill, nearby, lost WellSense Care Alliance on January 1, 2026. Lawrence treatment programs and rehabs around Haverhill are listed below.

MassHealth rehab in Fall River and New Bedford

Fall River and New Bedford are WellSense territory under MassHealth, with WellSense Community Alliance and WellSense Southcoast Alliance as the two partnership plans and (888) 217-3501 as their behavioral health line. Members who want another option can join the PCC Plan or a Primary Care ACO, managed through MBHP, and use Fall River rehab centers or New Bedford treatment options.

Can I use MassHealth for rehab in a different county?

Yes, if the program is in the member’s plan network. The PCC Plan, Community Care Cooperative, Revere Health Choice, WellSense Boston Children’s ACO and the WellSense Essential MCO cover every town in Massachusetts, while partnership plans run by service area. MassHealth publishes no separate rule for out-of-state rehab, and every program must be an enrolled MassHealth provider to be paid.

How much does rehab cost with MassHealth?

Nothing, for covered services. MassHealth ended copays on April 1, 2024, so members in every plan pay nothing for prescriptions, detox or residential care. One Care and Senior Care Options members generally have little or no out-of-pocket cost, and from October 1, 2028 federal law will require some adults above 100% of the poverty level to share costs.

MassHealth rules change again in 2027, when federal work and six-month renewal requirements reach some adults aged 19 to 64, though people in certain substance use disorder treatment programs are excused. Massachusetts residents outside MassHealth can look at state-funded rehab programs, and Community Behavioral Health Center crisis services serve anyone regardless of insurance.
