Treatment Centers in Connecticut That Accept Anthem

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Connecticut’s Blue Cross licensee and part of Elevance Health, pays for drug and alcohol rehab through group plans for employers, individual coverage bought on or off Access Health CT, and Medicare Advantage. Residential care, detox, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs need precertification on Anthem’s individual plans.

Program cards on this page give a direct line, the type of treatment available (from a residential bed or detox to day treatment and counseling) and whether CARF, The Joint Commission or a similar body accredits the program. Facts on the cards come from public treatment registers and Connecticut’s license files. Choose a town, then ask about Anthem.

Does Anthem Cover Rehab in Connecticut?

Yes. Anthem’s 2024 Connecticut individual certificate names six kinds of mental health and substance use care: facility stays, residential programs, day treatment, intensive outpatient groups, office visits and video visits. The Connecticut rehab facilities below include programs that take Anthem Blue Cross plans.

Elevance Health, which was Anthem, Inc. until June 28, 2022, is the Blue Cross and Blue Shield licensee for the whole state of Connecticut. In Connecticut, Anthem sells employer plans, individual plans on and off the state exchange, and Medicare Advantage HMO, PPO and special needs plans. Federal workers on the Blue Cross Service Benefit Plan use Anthem locally.

Does Anthem Cover Inpatient Rehab in Connecticut?

Yes. Anthem’s Connecticut individual certificate for 2024 covers inpatient facility care and long-term residential rehab for substance use, and Anthem’s 2024 Gold HMO Pathway Enhanced plan charges 20 percent coinsurance after the deductible for an inpatient behavioral stay. Employer plans cover the same levels when their plan document includes them.

How long will Anthem pay for residential rehab?

Anthem has no set number of residential days; utilization management decides each stay. Anthem licenses MCG’s behavioral health guidelines, which it may adapt, for precertification, hospital stays, level of care and discharge, while Carelon Behavioral Health, part of the same Elevance group, applies The ASAM Criteria to the plans it manages.

Does Anthem need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

Yes. Under Anthem’s national individual-plan certificates, inpatient and outpatient facility care for substance use or mental health needs precertification, including residential stays, day treatment and intensive outpatient groups, unless a law forbids it. Usually the program sends Anthem its clinical notes, though a member can also call the number on the Anthem card and give the program’s name.

Does Anthem Cover Detox in Connecticut?

Yes. Detox in a facility falls under the inpatient facility benefit that Anthem’s certificates list for mental health and substance use, so residential detox programs need the same precertification. On the 2024 Connecticut Gold HMO Pathway Enhanced plan, that inpatient facility benefit is paid at 20 percent coinsurance after the deductible.

Does Anthem Cover Outpatient Rehab in Connecticut?

Yes. Anthem’s individual plans cover outpatient office visits, other outpatient services and virtual visits for substance use, and the 2024 Connecticut Gold HMO Pathway Enhanced plan charges 20 percent coinsurance after the deductible for each. Intensive outpatient treatment and partial hospitalization are covered too, after precertification.

Anthem’s Medicare Advantage plans in Connecticut follow Medicare’s coverage rules first, and where Carelon manages a Medicare benefit it applies CMS coverage determinations before its own criteria. Anthem’s 2027 Connecticut Medicare page lists HMO, PPO, dual special needs and chronic condition special needs plans, and members can compare evening treatment programs here.

Does Anthem Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. CarelonRx, formerly IngenioRx, is Elevance Health’s pharmacy benefit manager and handles formularies for Anthem plans, so each Connecticut plan’s drug list sets the tier for opioid tapering with insurance, buprenorphine and naltrexone. Medicare Advantage members use the Part D drug list of their own Anthem plan.

Does Anthem cover Suboxone?

Yes. After settling with the New York Attorney General early in 2017, Anthem dropped prior authorization for buprenorphine and other medication-assisted treatment drugs, a change it applied to most Anthem plans across the country. Buprenorphine programs that take insurance can usually prescribe without a separate request, though the plan’s current drug list sets the tier.

Does Anthem cover methadone?

Possibly, but that answer has to come from the member’s own Connecticut plan, since none of the Anthem documents behind this page mention methadone. Daily dosing happens only in licensed clinics, so before a first visit to methadone treatment programs, an employer, individual or Medicare member can call Anthem to ask how clinic dosing is paid.

Anthem Rehab Centers Near Darien Beaches, Sleeping Giant and the Connecticut River

For Connecticut members on an Anthem individual HMO, programs outside the network are paid only in an emergency or urgent situation, so whatever the setting, the program needs to be in network. Employer and Medicare plans set their own network rules, which the plan documents spell out.

Anthem rehab near Darien and Norwalk beaches

Darien’s town beaches and Norwalk’s Calf Pasture Beach face Long Island Sound at the southwestern end of the Connecticut shoreline. Anthem members looking at shoreline rehab centers or Darien recovery programs need the same precertification for a residential stay there as anywhere else in the state.

Anthem rehab near Sleeping Giant and the traprock ridges

Sleeping Giant in Hamden and Talcott Mountain above Simsbury are part of the traprock ridges that run north through central Connecticut. Anthem members drawn to mountain-area rehab programs or Hamden treatment options follow the network rule of their own plan type, whether that is an employer PPO, an individual Pathway HMO or a Medicare plan.

Anthem rehab along the Connecticut River

The Connecticut River passes Glastonbury, Rocky Hill and Portland on its way south from Hartford to Long Island Sound at Old Saybrook. Anthem members interested in riverfront recovery centers or Glastonbury rehab programs need a program that is in the Pathway network before an individual-plan admission.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Anthem in Connecticut?

Browse the listings on this page. Anthem coverage works at all of them, and the cards give the phone, care offered and accreditation for each. Filter by town, care level or substance, and Blue Cross Blue Shield rehabs nationwide have a page of their own.

Anthem requires precertification before a residential, detox, day treatment or intensive outpatient admission, and the program typically requests it after intake. Benefit questions go to the member line printed on the Anthem card. The table lists Anthem’s Connecticut plan lines and where to ask about each.

Anthem rehab in Hartford and the Capitol Region

Anthem’s individual plans on Access Health CT use the Pathway HMO network, and the 2024 Gold HMO Pathway Enhanced certificate pays no out-of-network behavioral care outside emergencies. A Hartford member on such a plan can compare Hartford drug rehab programs with Manchester treatment centers once they know each one is in the Pathway network.

Anthem rehab in New Haven and Meriden

Anthem’s Connecticut Medicare Advantage line includes D-SNPs for residents enrolled in Medicare and HUSKY Health together, and chronic condition plans for members with diabetes, heart disease, lung disease or kidney disease. Older members near Meriden recovery centers or Fair Haven treatment programs choose among plans by county, since Anthem’s Medicare options vary from one county to the next.

Anthem rehab in Bridgeport and Fairfield

For federal workers around Bridgeport and Fairfield who chose the Blue Cross federal plan, Anthem is the Blue company on the ground in Connecticut. The Service Benefit Plan’s own brochure sets its benefits nationwide, while Anthem’s Connecticut network and precertification process apply when a member enters Fairfield addiction treatment.

Anthem rehab in Enfield, Danielson and the Massachusetts border

Massachusetts state employees on the Group Insurance Commission who live in Connecticut can join Wellpoint’s Total Choice or PLUS plans, Elevance’s non-Blue brand, with Carelon managing behavioral care. On PLUS, contracted providers are paid in full after the copay or deductible and others at 80 percent. Members near Danielson rehab options and other border towns ask about benefits at 833-663-4176.

Can I use Anthem for rehab in a different state?

Anthem coverage outside Connecticut depends on the plan. On an individual HMO bought in Connecticut, a program in another state must be in the network unless the situation is urgent or an emergency. Employer and Medicare plans write their own out-of-network and out-of-state terms, and precertification still applies to facility care.

How much does rehab cost with Anthem?

Anthem costs follow the plan. The 2024 Connecticut Gold HMO Pathway Enhanced plan charged 20 percent coinsurance after the deductible for inpatient, outpatient and virtual behavioral care, with a yearly out-of-pocket maximum that capped the member’s share. Employer and Medicare plans set their own deductibles and copays, and the Anthem plan documents list each amount.

Is Anthem connected to HUSKY Health?

Only through its parent company. Anthem runs no HUSKY Health plan, but Carelon Behavioral Health CT, owned like Anthem by Elevance Health, has managed HUSKY’s behavioral health benefit for the Connecticut Behavioral Health Partnership since 2006, first as ValueOptions and later as Beacon Health Options. HUSKY members use that partnership, not Anthem.

Plenty of Connecticut residents pay for addiction treatment without Anthem, and some move between payers over time. Residents who lose Anthem coverage, for example after a job change, can look at Medicaid-funded rehab through HUSKY Health or programs with payment assistance, both of which appear in the listings here alongside Anthem programs.
