Sex Addiction Treatment: What to Know

Sexual behavior that has become compulsive is treated as a behavioral health problem, usually with individual therapy, group work and, where it applies, care for a co-occurring substance use disorder. Shame keeps many people from asking, which tends to delay treatment for years.

SAMHSA records this as treatment for other addiction disorders, without naming subtypes, so ask directly what a program actually runs: who leads the groups, what training the clinicians hold, and whether partners are included. Listings show levels of care and payment; compare, then call.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Is sex addiction a real mental health disorder?

Recognition is split. The World Health Organization's ICD-11 lists compulsive sexual behaviour disorder under code 6C72 as an impulse control disorder, while the DSM-5 does not include it, and AASECT states it does not find sexual addiction training and treatment methods adequately informed by accurate human sexuality knowledge.

ICD-11 places the disorder among impulse control conditions rather than addictive behaviours, because it is not yet known whether the underlying processes match those in substance use disorders.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditionshttps://rehabseekers.com/mental-health/mental-health-conditions/co-occurring-mental-health/
What is compulsive sexual behavior disorder?

Compulsive sexual behaviour disorder is a persistent pattern of failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges that results in repetitive sexual behavior. The ICD-11 requires the pattern to last an extended period, for example six months or more, and to cause marked distress or significant impairment.

Impairment can affect personal, family, social, educational or occupational functioning, and the pattern may continue even when it brings little or no satisfaction.

Mental Health Conditionshttps://rehabseekers.com/mental-health/mental-health-conditions/
Is sex addiction in the DSM-5?

No. Compulsive sexual behavior is not listed in the DSM-5, though providers widely treat it as a real and treatable condition. A DSM-5 work group drafted proposed criteria for hypersexual disorder and ran a formal field trial, but the diagnosis was not included in the manual.

The field trial reportedly showed high interrater agreement, high internal consistency and external validity for the proposed criteria.

Sex addiction is the common name for a pattern of repeated, intense sexual urges that a person cannot control, causing marked distress or serious trouble in a relationship, a job or daily functioning. The World Health Organization’s ICD-11 names this pattern compulsive sexual behavior disorder, coded 6C72, while the DSM-5-TR used in most U.S. clinical settings does not list it at all, which is the single fact that shapes almost every other answer on this page.

What distinguishes this term from pornography addiction or the broader “other addiction” category is that it covers the full range of compulsive sexual behavior, not one activity, and it is the only one of these siblings with an internationally recognized diagnostic code, even though the leading U.S. sex therapy body, AASECT, still declines to call it an addiction.

This page covers who a diagnosis applies to, what treatment involves, how long it runs, who provides it, where recognition stands, which levels of care apply, what it costs, and how to find a qualified clinician.
