Is Lucet the same as New Directions Behavioral Health?

Yes. New Directions Behavioral Health changed its name to Lucet on January 19, 2023, a year after acquiring the behavioral health technology platform Tridiuum. Staff, phone lines and clinical criteria carried over, and the provider authorization portal WebPass still runs on the old New Directions web address.

BCBS Kansas told members the rename changed nothing for them, because their contract continues to be with Blue Cross Blue Shield rather than with Lucet.

Lucet is not an insurance company. It is a behavioral health management firm that runs the mental health and substance use side of other companies’ health plans, handling authorization, case management, care navigation and Employee Assistance Program work. The member’s contract stays with the health plan; Lucet is the organization on the other end of the line when treatment has to be authorized.

That distinction decides how an admission goes. A card may read Florida Blue, Louisiana Blue, Blue KC, Arkansas Blue Cross, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama or Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, and the benefit, the deductible and the copay all come from that plan. Lucet reviews whether the requested level of care meets its clinical criteria, and an admissions team sends the request to Lucet rather than to the plan.
