Does Colorado Access Cover Rehab in Colorado?

Yes. Colorado Access covers substance use treatment for Health First Colorado members in Region 4, listing counseling, withdrawal management, medication-assisted treatment, intensive outpatient, inpatient hospital and residential treatment. Members keep a state Health First Colorado card rather than a Colorado Access card, and they compare rehab programs across Colorado the same way.

Colorado Access became the Region 4 organization on July 1, 2025, when the Accountable Care Collaborative Phase III merged its former Regions 3 and 5. It administers the capitated behavioral benefit of Colorado’s Medicaid benefit in-house, with no outside vendor, while the state handles physical health authorizations. Colorado Access operates only in Colorado and has no parent company.

Does Colorado Access Cover Inpatient Rehab in Colorado?

Yes. Colorado Access covers residential substance use care at Levels 3.5, 3.3 and 3.1 of The ASAM Criteria and inpatient care at Level 3.7 under Health First Colorado, and it lists residential mental health care alongside residential substance use care under Medicaid residential rehab. Those programs must be state licensed and enrolled with Health First Colorado.

How long will Colorado Access pay for residential rehab?

Colorado Access sets no fixed number of residential days; each extension turns on medical necessity, and the program files the reauthorization request at least one business day before the current approval runs out. Short-term residential through Medicaid is reassessed against The ASAM Criteria before each extension.

Does Colorado Access need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

Yes. Colorado Access’s 2026 provider manual requires prior authorization for residential treatment, acute treatment units, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care, and its authorization staff answer at any hour, every day. The program’s own assessment names a level, and Colorado Access checks that level against ASAM placement rules.

Does Colorado Access Cover Detox in Colorado?

Yes. Colorado Access lists withdrawal management among Region 4 benefits, and the state’s January 2025 guide lets members enter withdrawal management without prior authorization. Medicaid detox programs must still document medical necessity, and alcohol detox through Medicaid follows the same rule. Crisis stabilization units and emergency ambulance transport also need no Colorado Access authorization.

Does Colorado Access Cover Outpatient Rehab in Colorado?

Yes. Colorado Access covers outpatient substance use counseling without prior authorization, along with Medicaid IOP programs and Medicaid partial hospitalization, which runs five weekdays, six to eight hours each day. Members need no referral for behavioral care, and counseling can be in person or by telehealth.

Colorado Access covers all medically necessary services for members under 21 at no cost under Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment rules. In December 2025 Colorado Access said youth residential substance use resources are scarce in the Denver area and expanded an out-of-state partnership for adolescent inpatient detox and residential care.

Does Colorado Access Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. Colorado Access covers medication-assisted treatment at no cost to the member, and the state requires any residential or inpatient program billing Medicaid to facilitate access to it. Prescriptions follow the state’s covered drug list rather than a Colorado Access formulary, and some drugs need state prior authorization.

Does Colorado Access cover methadone?

Yes. Colorado Access names methadone as its example of covered medication-assisted treatment on its member mental health page, and the state benefit list sets no limit on that service. For a Region 4 member in Denver, Adams, Arapahoe or Douglas County, methadone treatment at an opioid treatment program carries no copay.

Does Colorado Access cover Suboxone?

Yes. Colorado Access members get buprenorphine and buprenorphine-naloxone through Health First Colorado’s pharmacy benefit, and pharmacists in Colorado have been allowed since May 1, 2025 to prescribe medications for opioid use disorder through a statewide protocol. Buprenorphine maintenance with Medicaid and naltrexone covered by Medicaid carry no pharmacy copay.

How does CHP+ from Colorado Access handle medications?

Colorado Access uses Navitus Health Solutions for its Child Health Plan Plus pharmacy benefit, with its own CHP+ HMO formulary and Navitus reviewing prior authorization, step therapy and quantity limit requests. Ninety-day maintenance fills are allowed, though not for controlled substances such as buprenorphine, while acamprosate (Campral) coverage follows the CHP+ formulary.

Colorado Access Rehab Centers Near Reservoirs, the South Platte River and the Pike National Forest

Colorado Access’s Medicaid region is the Denver metro, but its four counties still run from the eastern plains to the foothills. Care outside the region needs a program in Colorado Access’s network or its authorization, sometimes through a single case agreement, so the settings below stay inside Region 4.

Colorado Access covers Arapahoe County, where Cherry Creek Reservoir and Aurora Reservoir lie on the edge of southeast Aurora and Centennial. Rehab centers near lakes and programs in Southeast Aurora fall inside Region 4, so a Health First Colorado stay there is authorized by Colorado Access.

Colorado Access rehab in Denver

Colorado Access manages behavioral health for Denver members of Elevate Medicaid Choice, the Medicaid managed care plan that handles their physical care, so substance use authorization comes from Colorado Access either way. Its office is at 4643 S Ulster St in Denver. Treatment programs in Denver and Montbello rehab programs send their authorization requests to that team.

Colorado Access rehab in Aurora

Colorado Access covers all of Aurora, which straddles Arapahoe and Adams counties, both in Region 4 and both former Colorado Access counties under the old Region 3. Members there kept the same organization through the July 2025 change, unlike Elbert County to the southeast. For Health First Colorado members, Colorado Access authorizes care at Aurora addiction services.

Colorado Access serves Adams County’s northern suburbs, where Health First Colorado members also use the state’s nurse advice line, 800-283-3221, at any hour. Colorado Access covers Douglas County, including Parker, Castle Rock and Highlands Ranch, and from January 1, 2027 plans to sell Colorado Access Choice marketplace plans mainly in the Denver metro, subject to regulatory approval. Health First Colorado stays at Parker treatment centers run through Colorado Access today, while the new marketplace plans have no published benefit details yet.
