Treatment Centers in Colorado That Accept Aetna

Aetna’s Colorado employer plans, written by Aetna Health Inc. and Aetna Life Insurance Company, cover drug and alcohol rehab. They include an HMO across 15 counties and plans built on the 11-county Aetna Whole Health Front Range network. Colorado has no Aetna marketplace or Health First Colorado plan.

Each Colorado program below lists its phone number, a short outline of its care (detox, residential or intensive outpatient), and notes CARF or Joint Commission accreditation where it applies. The information comes from state licensing data for Colorado and from government treatment registers, which helps narrow your choices before Aetna’s precertification call.

Does Aetna Cover Rehab in Colorado?

Yes. Aetna covers drug and alcohol rehab in Colorado when the member’s plan includes it, and Aetna’s mental health benefits list substance use among the conditions they treat. Colorado Aetna members reach Colorado rehab centers through an employer plan, since Aetna sold no Colorado marketplace plan and runs no Health First Colorado plan.

Aetna Health Inc. is the company the Colorado Division of Insurance licenses as Aetna’s HMO, and Aetna Life Insurance Company writes its other Colorado plans. Aetna makes its own behavioral health precertification decisions, and rehabs that accept Aetna are found on Aetna’s own HMO, open access, EPO, PPO and Aetna Whole Health networks.

Does Aetna Cover Inpatient Rehab in Colorado?

Yes. Aetna covers residential addiction treatment and inpatient drug rehab in Colorado as inpatient confinements, whether the stay is in a hospital ward, an addiction treatment facility or a residential center. Aetna’s September 2025 Colorado HMO access plan reports that the network meets the state’s provider ratio standards for substance use care in each county.

How long will Aetna pay for residential rehab?

Aetna ties the length of a Colorado residential stay to medical necessity, judged against The ASAM Criteria, Third Edition, rather than to a fixed number of days in the plan documents. Each stay is reassessed while it runs, and residential rehab with insurance falls under the member’s inpatient benefit.

Does Aetna need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

Yes. Aetna’s behavioral health precertification list, dated August 1, 2024, names every inpatient and residential substance use stay, along with partial hospitalization, as needing precertification. Network programs request it on the commercial line, 1-888-632-3862. When a Colorado member picks an out-of-network program, Aetna says the member, not the program, must arrange precertification.

Does Aetna Cover Detox in Colorado?

Yes. Aetna covers inpatient withdrawal management as an inpatient confinement needing precertification, and insured medical detox in a Colorado hospital or facility follows that rule. One employer’s 2026 Choice POS II document, written outside Colorado, lists ambulatory detox with medication as covered, and Aetna dropped precertification for outpatient detox options on January 1, 2019.

Does Aetna Cover Outpatient Rehab in Colorado?

Yes. Aetna’s employer plans sold in Colorado cover routine outpatient counseling with no precertification, as well as intensive outpatient with insurance and insured partial hospitalization. Intensive outpatient dropped off Aetna’s precertification list in 2019, while partial hospitalization stays on it. Plan documents charge a copay or coinsurance for each outpatient visit.

Aetna lists two virtual options Colorado members may have: CVS Virtual Care and Teladoc Health, with therapists available seven days a week. Virtual addiction counseling depends on the employer’s choices, and where a Colorado employer also buys Resources For Living, Aetna’s employee assistance program, a few counseling sessions come free.

Does Aetna Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. Aetna covers medication-assisted treatment for Colorado members through its drug lists and medical benefit, and CVS Caremark, its sister company, manages the pharmacy side. Each employer plan has its own formulary, so a Colorado member enters the plan name and year in Aetna’s online drug search to see the tier before the first fill.

Does Aetna cover methadone?

Aetna publishes no methadone rule for its Colorado employer plans, so coverage depends on the plan document and whether the clinic bills Aetna. Methadone is given only at opioid treatment programs, and methadone treatment clinics can say whether they take a given Aetna plan. Medicare covers methadone at enrolled programs for Aetna Medicare members.

Does Aetna cover Suboxone?

Yes. Since March 2017, Aetna commercial coverage has not required prior authorization for buprenorphine, including Suboxone, so for Colorado members Suboxone with private insurance comes down to the plan’s drug tier rather than an approval step. The tier and quantity limit appear on the plan’s own drug list.

Does Aetna cover medications for alcohol use?

Often, depending on the employer’s drug list: Aetna’s formularies can include alcohol use disorder medications, though coverage and tier vary by Colorado employer plan. A Colorado member can search Aetna’s drug tool by plan name to see how acamprosate, disulfiram and naltrexone treatment options are tiered. The employer’s list is the one that counts.

Aetna Rehab Centers Near Pikes Peak, the Arkansas River and Western Colorado Canyons

Aetna’s Colorado HMO reaches well beyond Denver, into Teller County below Pikes Peak, Fremont County on the Arkansas River and Mesa County among the canyons near Grand Junction. Those three areas sit inside the HMO’s 15-county service area, though only Teller is also part of the narrower Aetna Whole Health network.

Aetna rehab near Pikes Peak

Aetna counts both El Paso and Teller counties in its HMO and Aetna Whole Health networks, covering Woodland Park, Cripple Creek and the slopes of the Pike National Forest. Rehab centers near mountains and programs near Manitou Springs are network options for those plans, and a residential stay there still needs Aetna precertification first.

Aetna rehab along the Arkansas River

Aetna includes Fremont County in its Colorado HMO but not in Aetna Whole Health, so the network choice matters along the Arkansas River around the Royal Gorge. Rehab centers near rivers and Canon City treatment programs are in-network only for members on the broader HMO, while for Whole Health plans the same programs are out of network.

Aetna rehab near the canyons of Mesa County

Aetna’s Colorado HMO covers Mesa County, the only Western Slope county in its service area, where the Colorado National Monument canyons rise above the Colorado River. Rehab centers near canyons and rehab options in Grand Junction fall outside Aetna Whole Health, leaving the HMO as the in-network route there.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Aetna in Colorado?

Browse the listings on this page. Every Colorado program shown here takes Aetna, but programs belong to different Aetna networks. Each entry shows how to phone the program, its care levels and its accreditation, and the city filter keeps results near home. Call the admissions desk with your Aetna card handy to find out which network applies.

Before a Colorado residential, inpatient or partial hospitalization admission, Aetna needs precertification. The program can file it, or the member may phone the number printed on the Aetna ID card. With precertification, Colorado HMO members may use an out-of-network program at in-network cost when no network program can meet state wait-time and distance standards.

Aetna rehab in Denver and the southern suburbs

Aetna’s Colorado HMO and Aetna Whole Health networks both cover Denver, Arapahoe and Douglas counties, so a Denver-area member on either design has in-network choices close to home. Denver addiction treatment centers and rehabs in Greenwood Village fall inside both service areas. The Adams and Jefferson county suburbs are on both maps as well.

Aetna rehab in Colorado Springs

Aetna treats El Paso County as part of both Colorado network maps, making Colorado Springs the southern end of Aetna Whole Health. Teller County is included too, while Pueblo and Fremont counties beyond it are HMO-only. Colorado Springs rehab programs in network therefore work for either design, with precertification the same as in Denver.

Aetna rehab in Fort Collins and Loveland

Aetna covers Larimer and Weld counties in its Colorado HMO and in Aetna Whole Health, the northern edge of both maps, reaching Fort Collins, Loveland and Greeley. The Whole Health map serves Aetna HMO, Health Network Only, Health Network Option and Open Access Managed Choice plans. Treatment centers in Fort Collins and Loveland treatment options serve both counties.

Aetna rehab in Pueblo

Aetna lists Pueblo County in its Colorado HMO but leaves it out of Aetna Whole Health, so a Pueblo member’s network depends on which design the employer picked. On the narrower plan, a Pueblo program counts as out of network. Pueblo drug and alcohol rehabs in the HMO network bill at the in-network level, after precertification.

Can I use Aetna for rehab in a different state?

Yes, if the Colorado plan pays outside the network, as Aetna Choice POS II and Open Choice PPO designs do. Aetna’s HMO and EPO designs cover care outside the network only in emergencies. Any out-of-state residential stay still needs Aetna precertification, and Aetna requires precertification before it will pay an out-of-network program at the in-network level.

How much does rehab cost with Aetna?

Aetna’s cost depends on the Colorado employer plan: a deductible, then a copay or coinsurance per visit or stay. Out-of-network programs cost more. They may bill above Aetna’s allowed amount, and those extra charges do not count toward the out-of-pocket limit. Colorado HMO members who see an out-of-network clinician at a network facility pay no more than in network.

Aetna coverage is one route among several for Coloradans paying for rehab. The listings also carry rehabs billing other insurers and self-pay rehab programs, and facility pages name the insurers each one bills, which helps a member compare out-of-pocket costs before choosing.
