Rehabs That Allow Smoking

Unrestricted means SAMHSA has recorded no formal limit on smoking at the facility. In practice this appears most often at outpatient clinics, opioid treatment programs and smaller residential settings where tobacco use is simply not part of the house rules. Local law may still apply indoors.

The record reflects what a facility reported at the time of the survey, and policies drift. State indoor air laws also override facility practice in many places. Confirm the current arrangement before admission, and ask whether nicotine replacement is offered if you would rather cut down.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Are there rehabs where you can smoke cigarettes?

Yes. Smoking rules are set program by program, not nationally. SAMHSA reported that about one third of substance use treatment facilities had smoke-free policies inside and outside their grounds in 2016, which leaves many programs allowing tobacco somewhere on site, usually outdoors.

An unrestricted record means the program reported no formal limit on smoking. State indoor air law still applies to the building, so confirm the current arrangement before admission.

Smoking and Vaping Policyhttps://rehabseekers.com/type/smoking-and-vaping-policy/
Does the state smoke-free air law apply to a rehab facility?

Usually in part. CDC reported that as of June 30, 2024, 28 states, DC, and several territories had 100% smokefree indoor air laws covering bars, restaurants, and both private and government worksites, so indoor smoking is barred in a treatment building in those places regardless of program policy.

CDC's data covers state statutes only, not state regulations, city or county measures, or case law, any of which may be stricter.

Residential Treatment Centershttps://rehabseekers.com/type/residential-facilities/
Which states do not have comprehensive smoke-free workplace laws?

CDC counted 22 states, plus Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Palau, without comprehensive smokefree indoor air laws covering all bars, restaurants, and worksites as of June 30, 2024. Idaho, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Oklahoma prohibited smoking in government worksites but not private ones.

Alaska's 2018 law covers indoor worksites, restaurants, and bars but lets municipalities opt out by voter referendum, so CDC does not count it as comprehensive.

An unrestricted smoking rehab is a treatment program that does not ban cigarette smoking on its premises. Whether a given site can offer that depends less on its own preference than on the law above it: a state smokefree indoor air statute, a local ordinance that may be stricter, and in some states a licensing rule requiring tobacco-free grounds across treatment settings. The program’s own policy sits on top of all three.

Cigarettes bring one issue a vape does not: tobacco smoke changes how several psychiatric and addiction medicines are processed by the body. That is a dosing matter, not a comfort matter, and it cuts in both directions — starting to smoke and stopping can each shift a blood level enough to need a prescriber’s attention. Open flame around medical oxygen is the second difference, and secondhand smoke in shared indoor space is the third.

This page covers where smoking is still lawful indoors, how designated areas work, which medicines interact with smoke, the fire and secondhand exposure questions a residential program has to answer, what treatment costs, and what to ask before a bed is accepted, including whether smoking cessation counseling is on offer for anyone who wants it.
