Internet Addiction Treatment

Compulsive internet use is not a formal diagnosis in the DSM-5, though clinicians treat it regularly. Care usually targets what sits underneath: anxiety, depression, social avoidance or trauma, alongside practical work on sleep, device habits and the hours the day has lost.

Because there is no diagnostic code, there is no SAMHSA field either; these programs come from the broader behavioral addiction cohort. That makes the phone call more important than the filter. Ask what the treatment plan would actually look like week by week.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is internet addiction?

Internet addiction is a label for excessive, compulsive or out-of-control use of the internet or online activities that leads to negative consequences in someone's life. The American Psychiatric Association uses the term technology addiction, and it can involve social media, gaming, gambling, problematic use of online pornography and other online activity.

In research literature the broader phrase Problematic Usage of the Internet is used, describing a likely mixed group of internet-related conditions rather than one single disorder.

Mental Health Conditionshttps://rehabseekers.com/mental-health/mental-health-conditions/
Is internet addiction a recognized mental health disorder?

No. The American Psychiatric Association states that internet-related addictions such as social media, internet surfing, online shopping and cybersex are not currently included in the DSM-5-TR as diagnoses. Of these behaviors, only internet gaming appears in the DSM-5-TR appendix, identified as a condition requiring further study.

A 2016 systematic review concluded that consensus on diagnostic criteria and measures is still needed to make findings comparable across studies.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditionshttps://rehabseekers.com/mental-health/mental-health-conditions/co-occurring-mental-health/
What are the signs of internet addiction?

Warning signs include inability to control use, difficulty meeting personal and professional responsibilities, continuing despite negative consequences, and problems that last over an extended period. The APA also flags lying about how often you go online and constant thoughts or cravings about technology.

As with substance use disorders, someone may need more time online for the same effect and feel withdrawal symptoms when access is cut off.

Internet addiction is a non-diagnostic label for excessive, compulsive online use that disrupts daily life. It is not a diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR or the WHO’s ICD-11; researchers instead study it as problematic internet use, a broad and still inconsistently defined category that can take the form of social media, online shopping or other compulsive online behavior.

What sets this page apart from internet gaming disorder and video game addiction is scope: internet addiction is the broader umbrella term for compulsive online activity in general, while gaming has its own narrower research condition with its own proposed symptom list. A person whose compulsive use centers on one specific online activity, such as gambling or shopping, is usually described using that activity’s own label rather than this broader one.

This page covers who the label describes, how it is assessed and addressed in practice, how long treatment tends to run, who provides it, and how to find help, including for a co-occurring mental health condition.
