Video Game Addiction Treatment

Parents usually arrive at this page first, often after months of arguments about screens. Video game addiction is the everyday name for what clinicians call gaming disorder, and treatment tends to combine individual therapy, family sessions and structured rebuilding of sleep and routine.

SAMHSA files gaming under its general behavioral addiction field, so this list is not narrowed to gaming specialists. When you call, ask how many young people the team has treated for it and whether family work is included. Compare a few programs.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Is video game addiction a real disorder?

Yes, in one classification system. The World Health Organization recognizes gaming disorder in the ICD-11, describing impaired control over gaming, gaming taking priority over other activities, and continuing or escalating play despite negative consequences. The American Psychiatric Association treats Internet gaming disorder as a condition for further study rather than an official diagnosis.

The APA notes ongoing debate about whether gaming belongs in the addiction category, since heavy gaming can also be a symptom of depression or anxiety.

Mental Health Conditionshttps://rehabseekers.com/mental-health/mental-health-conditions/
Is video game addiction in the DSM-5?

Not as an official diagnosis. Internet gaming disorder appears in the DSM-5-TR section recommending conditions for further research, alongside caffeine use disorder. The American Psychiatric Association states that gambling disorder remains the only behavioral addiction identified as a formal diagnosis in the manual.

The proposed criteria are limited to gaming, online or alone, and do not cover general internet use, online gambling, social media or smartphones.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditionshttps://rehabseekers.com/mental-health/mental-health-conditions/co-occurring-mental-health/
What is the WHO definition of gaming disorder?

The World Health Organization defines gaming disorder as a pattern of digital-gaming or video-gaming behavior marked by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities, and continuation or escalation despite negative consequences. The pattern must cause significant impairment and normally be evident for at least 12 months.

The ICD-11 lists two subtypes, predominantly online and predominantly offline, and allows a shorter duration when all requirements are met and symptoms are severe.

Video game addiction describes a pattern of gaming that causes loss of control and significant impairment in daily life. The World Health Organization’s ICD-11 formally recognizes a related condition, gaming disorder, as a diagnosis, while the American Psychiatric Association lists Internet Gaming Disorder in the DSM-5-TR only as a condition that needs further study.

This page is written from the consumer side of that gap: where internet gaming disorder covers the proposed clinical criteria themselves, this page focuses on the practical questions a parent or an adult gamer actually asks, such as what talk therapy for this looks like, who diagnoses it, and what to do if a teenager shows the warning signs.

This page covers who it affects, what treatment involves, how long it tends to run, who provides it, how it is paid for, and how to find help, including for a co-occurring condition.
