About VA Nebraska/Western Iowa HCS – Grand Island

VA Nebraska/Western Iowa HCS operates from 2201 North Broadwell Avenue in Grand Island. The site sits in Hall County, which shapes which public funding routes apply. The practical catchment runs wider than the city limits, taking in people who travel in rather than finding care on their doorstep.

Residential treatment is delivered here, alongside medication-assisted treatment. Which level fits depends on the assessment rather than on what is available, so the useful first question is what that assessment involves. Care offered spans more than one level, which means someone can move between them without changing provider.

Licensing and Accreditation

CARF Accredited RehabCARFAccreditedAn international accreditor of rehabilitation and behavioural health services. Assessors visit the facility and review its practice against published standards. Voluntary, and renewed every one to three years.
Joint Commission Accredited RehabJoint CommissionAccreditedAn independent US body that inspects healthcare organisations against national safety and quality standards. Accreditation is voluntary, costs the facility money, and is renewed every three years.
SAMHSA ListedSAMHSAListedThe facility appears in the federal treatment locator maintained by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. It is a record that the facility exists and reports its services, not an assessment of quality.

Treatment Services at VA Nebraska/Western Iowa HCS

Residential treatment runs to a set weekly schedule, with evenings and weekends spent at home. That suits people holding down work or caring responsibilities, though it asks more of someone managing early recovery alone. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

Residential here is short-term, which makes what follows discharge the more important question. Buprenorphine and naltrexone are available and paired with counseling rather than prescribed alone. Assessment decides the level of care, so ask what that involves and how quickly it can happen.

VA Nebraska/Western Iowa HCS Address, Location and Contact Information

The address is 2201 North Broadwell Avenue, Grand Island, NE 68803, in Hall County. Confirm what a program covers before traveling in, since the level of care listed is not always the level with capacity. Ask what the assessment involves before you commit.

I would give this place zero stars if it was an option! I have been waiting 5 months for a med approval submitted by my community care doctor. The VA keeps denying it as a "non-formulary" prescription. Even though the… doctor has SPOKEN to a VA rep to make sure it was the right one!! "Deny until they die" is alive and well at the VA!

The SUDs program has religious groups and videos that are mandatory to attend and watch. I brought it up that this is illegal to make mandatory for me to attend thoughs classes as I am an atheist and this is a federaly… run hospital. They told me that I have to participate fully (meaning take the religious classes and watch the religious videos hosted by a priest and just ignore the religion and prayer) or I have to leave.

Was disheartened to hear the hospital administrator deny a flyer for a gofundme cause. It was for one of our vets 14 year old daughter who was just diagnosed with cancer. They said "if we let you post that the next… thing you know they'll be posting girl scout flyers." So take what you will of how much the people running the show over there actually care.

Incredible care. Five stars for Dr. Lawrence and all of the staff at the clinic.

Would rather send 3 years of supplies for someone to try and figure out where to store them then let someone return them. We don’t even know how long the person will live!! What a waste of supplies 😢

Went to the Grand Island facility to pay my bill. I have an abscess tooth and asked for a pain killer and an antibiotic that has been bothering me for 4+ days. I seen my primary physician and explained my predicament.… They sent me to the dentistry department. Which they in turned took an x-ray and said that I had an abscess but didn't help with neither an antibiotic or a pain killer for the pain. It is 1:00am in the morning so what is a person to do??? I am at my wit's end and in excruciating pain. So I am self medicating to roll the dice & I do not go to Doctors easily. What does a person do in my predicament? When you lose faith in your Healthcare?

It takes months to get an appointment here. If you miss an appointment or have to cancel for any reason it will take another few months to get a reschedule. It's really not worth going here unless it's last resort!

Am happy to add yet another 5 star review for this Veterans Administration Medical Center, essentially a full hospital with everything but an Emergency Room / Urgent Care department. Receiving services here during the… summer of 2019 I was duly impressed with the level of care, compassion, and timing of quality treatment compared to many other VA Med Centers / VAMCs. Social Workers, P A providers, Specialty Physicians, Records and Appointments, Travel, and so much more were all personally found to be top shelf here. Grand Island is very much a veterans' city in many respects and their pleasure in being such shows across the community though it especially shines here. Would have no problem needing to be served here again in the future. Highly recommended for my fellow veterans.

Outstanding facility, with a professional and competent staff. I have been very impressed with the care I receive here. Any Nebraska or Iowa veterans reading this should get enrolled at the facility so you have easy… access to the care you need. You won't find a more friendly staff anywhere else, and they are adamant about combating Veteran suicide and homelessness. With the passing of the Mission Act by President Trump, the social workers on staff have much more ability to get said veterans help within their local communities (if you live more than 30 minutes from a VA facility there are good options available). For example, the Mission Act can help if you require Chiropractic or Physical Therapy services as well as Counseling. Could not recommend more highly to my fellow Veterans!

This is a great asset for Nebraska. If you are a veteran and have not enrolled into the system you need to get out here and do it. I've been in another system before I moved back and it was nothing compared to this… place. Always someone willing to help you out here.

Heroes go to the VA and this place is super clean and sanitized. They are always remodeling and updating spaces and restrooms when they are not acceptable. Out of all the VA hospitals I suggest this one for medical… needs as well as substance abuse recovery. All of these people are awesome and it is very welcoming. If y'all have family Veterans here please come visit them. They deserve company. If y'all want to chat with some war veterans please call and ask to speak to them. These older veterans are treasure chests of knowledge and need your company and camaraderie.
